The Emperor stood at the center of the war room, hands braced flat against the map table, staring down at markers that hadn’t moved in hours.
"nothing," he said, voice dangerously quiet. "three days, half my Sentinel forces pulled from active border duty, and you’re still telling me we have nothing at all."
Reid stood rigid across the table, exhaustion carved deep into his face. "Your Majesty, we’ve swept every accessible territory within..."
"I don’t want a status report," the Emperor snapped, straightening sharply, fury finally cracking clean through the composed mask he’d worn for days. "I want to know why nobody thought to keep him at the academy in the first place. why every single Guide was pulled onto that battlefield, including the Empire’s only SSS-Rank, without a single contingency in place for exactly this."
"the incursion was significant," Reid said carefully. "we needed every available Guide to manage casualties..."
"and now I have no casualties to manage," the Emperor said, voice cold as ice, "because I have no Guide left to manage them, and no idea where he is, or what’s being done to him, or whether he’s even..." He stopped himself hard, jaw working, something raw flickering behind his fury before he shoved it back down and turned away from the table entirely, staring out the window instead.
Jayden, standing quiet near the door, finally spoke. "we’ll find him."
"you keep saying that," the Emperor said, not turning around. "I’d very much like it to start being true."
---
Mika lounged across his bed, propped up on a mountain of embroidered pillows, three of his usual companions gathered around him in various states of sprawled comfort, a plate of sweets balanced on his stomach.
"can you believe it," Mika said, popping a candied fruit into his mouth with lazy satisfaction. "gone. just like that. the great so called SSS-Rank prodigy, vanished into thin air, and here we all are, still perfectly fine."
"you don’t think he’s actually in danger?" one of his friends asked, though not with any real concern in her voice, more idle curiosity than anything.
"who cares," Mika said, waving a hand dismissively. "he ruined everything the second he woke up with that ridiculous rank. Logan was mine before that stupid engagement ever happened, and he’ll be mine again the second everyone stops fawning over some F-Class nobody who got lucky."
"F-Class nobody with an SSS rank," another friend pointed out, smirking.
"details," Mika said airily, waving that away too. "the point is, he’s gone, and Logan’s finally free to remember who actually cared about him this whole time." He stretched, thoroughly pleased with himself, reaching for another sweet. "honestly, I should send whoever took him a thank-you gift."
The others laughed, the sound light and careless, utterly unbothered by the chaos currently consuming the rest of the academy.
---
The alarm tore through the grounds an hour later, sharp and sudden, and every Sentinel still standing snapped instantly into formation, weapons drawn, the exhausted search efforts momentarily forgotten in the face of a fresh threat.
"movement detected at the northern perimeter," a voice called out over the emergency system. "unidentified. all available forces respond."
Squads scrambled into position, sweeping the treeline, the surrounding fields, every shadow and rooftop within range, weapons raised and ready for whatever had triggered the sensors. They found nothing.
"false alarm," someone finally called out, voice tight with frustration after nearly twenty minutes of tense, fruitless searching. "sensors must have glitched. no sign of anything out here."
Reid lowered his weapon slowly, jaw tight, scanning the empty treeline one final time before turning back toward the academy grounds, unease sitting heavy in his gut despite the all-clear. Too many strange things had happened in the last few days for him to fully trust the word "glitch" anymore.
Logan stood near the edge of the formation, staring out at the same empty treeline, torn in a way that had been eating at him since the moment Julian vanished. Part of him wanted to be out there with every search party, scouring every inch of territory until they found something, anything. Part of him knew he’d only slow the more experienced squads down, that his skill set was built for direct combat, not tracking or investigation.
’if I go,’ he thought, watching Reid direct the squads back toward the academy, ’I might just get in the way. but if I stay, and something happens to him while I’m sitting here doing nothing...’
He didn’t finish the thought, jaw tight, hands curling into fists at his sides, caught in exactly the kind of indecision he’d never once struggled with before all of this happened.
---
Julian trudged back through the corridor toward the room Xavier had given him, blood dried dark along his torn pant leg, exhaustion dragging at every limb, the adrenaline of the fight long since burned away and replaced with something heavier and far less useful.
The door was unlocked when he reached it, which somehow made the whole thing worse, like Xavier simply knew he had nowhere else to go regardless of whether the door was sealed or not.
Julian stepped inside anyway, because what other choice did he have, and the sight of that same soft bed, that same tall window, that same falsely peaceful room made something furious and exhausted twist together hard in his chest.
"back here again," he muttered, dropping down onto the edge of the bed, wincing as the movement pulled at his injured leg. "great. fantastic. love this room. love being back in this room."
The fox slipped out from wherever it had been hiding, landing lightly on the pillow beside him, ears drooping with visible relief at the sight of him upright and breathing. "host. you’re alive."
"barely," Julian muttered, reaching down to press his palm against the wound on his calf, letting a thin trickle of guiding energy seep into the torn skin, just enough to close it properly instead of wasting reserves on anything more elaborate. "Are you doing okay?"
"stable," the fox said. "worried. this unit does not like leaving you to fight alone."
"you didn’t have a choice," Julian said. "and I handled it. it’s fine."
The fox didn’t look entirely convinced, but didn’t push the point either, settling quiet against his side instead while Julian finished tending the wound, the room falling into heavy, exhausted silence around them.
Julian stared at the ceiling for a long moment, jaw tight, fury building slow and hot beneath the exhaustion, thinking about the horde wearing academy colors, about Xavier’s calm, satisfied voice watching him fight for his life like it was simply an interesting performance staged for his personal entertainment, about waking up in this exact room over and over with no way out that didn’t lead somewhere worse.
"he’ll pay for this," Julian said quietly, voice low and hard, staring up at nothing. "I swear it. whatever this is, whatever he wants from me, he’s going to regret ever dragging me here."
The fox’s ears perked slightly at the tone, something steady and resolute settling into it that hadn’t been there during the panic of the last few hours. "that," it said, "sounds like the host this unit remembers."
Julian let out a long breath, closing his eyes for just a moment against the weight of everything, exhaustion and fury and stubborn, unshakeable resolve tangling together into something he could actually work with. "yeah," he said quietly. "yeah, it is."
