Chapter 26: Fate Strikes Twice

Mika stood in front of his mirror the next morning, dabbing concealer under his eyes with the focused fury of a man personally wronged by the universe itself.

"custard," he muttered, jabbing at his reflection like it had personally offended him. "in my HAIR. AND IN FRONT OF THE ENTIRE ACADEMY. do you know how long it took to get that smell out? do you have any idea?"

His reflection, understandably, did not respond. "and nobody will tell me who did it," Mika continued, voice rising into a hiss as he blended the concealer with vicious little strokes. "’nobody touched you, Mika.’ ’you just tripped, Mika.’ LIES. all of it, are lies. someone rigged that tray. someone is out to humiliate me, and when I find out who..."

He jabbed the makeup brush so hard against his cheekbone that he winced, muttering another string of curses under his breath, and set the brush down just long enough to reach for his hairbrush instead, still glaring daggers at his own reflection like it owed him answers.

He did not notice the small puddle of spilled hair oil that had somehow appeared directly behind his left foot.

He did not notice it, that is, until his heel found it directly.

What followed was, by any objective measure, spectacular. Mika’s arms shot out in a full windmill, his hairbrush went flying end over end across the room, and his own undignified shriek echoed off the walls as he pitched backward directly into his open wardrobe, which promptly toppled sideways under his weight, dumping an entire season’s worth of carefully arranged outfits directly on top of him in a rustling avalanche of silk and sequins.

Silence. Mika lay there, tangled in three different capes and half a rack of formal robes, blinking up at his own ceiling in stunned disbelief.

"thank the heavens," he whispered to himself, voice trembling with genuine, fervent gratitude, "that nobody saw that."

He did not know that, several floors away, in the exact hallway that happened to have a clear sightline through his window across the courtyard, Julian had, in fact, seen every single second of it.

---

Julian had been scanning the courtyard below with sharp, careful attention, still tense from the night before, senses stretched thin trying to catch any hint of movement that didn’t belong, when his gaze had drifted, entirely by accident, toward the guest wing windows.

Which was exactly when he witnessed Mika’s wardrobe attempt to swallow him whole.

Julian stood frozen at the window for a solid three seconds, mouth slightly open, replaying what he’d just seen to make absolutely sure his exhausted brain wasn’t hallucinating it out of pure sleep deprivation.

"did you just see that," Julian said out loud, to nobody, voice caught somewhere between disbelief and helpless delight.

"Huh, see what," the fox asked, hopping up onto the windowsill beside him, tails swishing with immediate interest at the tone in Julian’s voice.

"Mika," Julian said, still staring across the courtyard like he half expected an instant replay, "he just fell into his own wardrobe. entire thing came down on top of him. capes and everything."

The fox went very, very. Then it made a sound Julian had genuinely never heard from it before... something between a wheeze and a screech, entirely undignified, its whole small body shaking with the force of it, tails thumping wildly against the windowsill.

"this unit," the fox managed between what could only be described as demonic little giggles, "did NOT do that one."

Julian blinked. "wait, seriously?"

"this unit has been perfectly well behaved since the custard incident," the fox said, still shaking with laughter, "this unit swears on its own considerable power that it did not touch a single hair oil bottle in that man’s room."

"then who..." Julian said.

"fate," the fox declared, composing itself with visible effort, straightening its posture with theatrical solemnity even as its tails kept twitching with residual mirth. "this unit told you already, host. some people simply attract catastrophe. this unit merely gave the universe a gentle push the first time. clearly, the universe decided it liked the taste and came back for seconds entirely on its own."

Julian let out a breath that was half exhaustion, half genuine laughter, the tension of the last twelve sleepless hours cracking just slightly under the sheer, undiluted absurdity of watching Mika get consumed by his own wardrobe from two hundred feet away. "he’s gonna think nobody saw that."

"he does think that way," the fox said, delighted. "this unit can practically feel his relief radiating from here. he has no idea. this unit finds that almost more satisfying than the custard."

"we shouldn’t laugh at this," Julian said, even as his shoulders shook slightly with the effort of not doing exactly that. "we’re supposed to be finding a dangerous stranger who broke into the bathhouse and threatened to force a bond on me."

"we can multitask," the fox said solemnly. "grief and comedy have always walked hand in hand, host. this unit read that somewhere. probably. this unit is choosing to believe it read that somewhere."

Julian shook his head, dragging his exhausted mind back toward the actual problem at hand, scanning the courtyard again with renewed focus, searching every shadow, every archway, every flicker of movement that could conceivably be the man from last night.

Nothing. Just students crossing between buildings, a few Sentinels running morning drills, the ordinary rhythm of academy life continuing on entirely unaware of what had happened a few hours earlier.

"anything," Julian murmured, more to himself than the fox, eyes still tracking every corner of the yard below. "any trace at all."

"nothing," the fox admitted, sobering fully now, ears flattening slightly. "this unit has been scanning continuously since last night. whatever he is, wherever he’s hiding, he’s leaving nothing behind for this unit to track."

Julian exhaled slowly, rubbing at his eyes, exhaustion pulling harder now that the adrenaline from Mika’s spectacular fall had faded. He hadn’t slept, not properly, not since the bathhouse, running instead on nervous energy and the grim certainty that closing his eyes for too long might invite exactly the kind of visitor he least wanted.

"we’re not going to find him by staring out a window," Julian muttered.

"probably not," the fox agreed. "though this unit would like it noted that staring out this particular window has already provided excellent entertainment value."

Julian huffed something that wasn’t quite a laugh, turning to finally step back from the window...

And froze. Because standing there, framed perfectly in the archway of the courtyard below, not hidden in shadow this time, not tucked away where only careful attention might catch him, was the man from the bathhouse.

He stood in plain daylight, in full view of anyone who cared to look, utterly unbothered by the students and Sentinels moving past him without so much as a glance in his direction, like none of them could see him at all.

His eyes were already fixed upward, directly on Julian’s window, like he’d been waiting there specifically for Julian to turn around and notice him.

Julian’s whole body went rigid. "Yeah fox," Julian said, voice low and urgent, not taking his eyes off the man for even a second. "fox, look. right there, the archway..."

The fox’s head snapped toward the window instantly, fur bristling along its spine. "this unit sees him," it hissed. "this unit sees him and still cannot get a proper read, host, he’s right there and this unit still can’t..."

The man’s mouth curved, slow and deliberate, into a smirk that carried all the quiet, patient menace from the night before, and he lifted one hand in something that might have been a mocking little wave, might have been an invitation, might have been a promise, before he simply stepped backward into the shadow of the archway and was gone, the same way he’d vanished from the bathhouse, like the air itself had swallowed him whole.

"Ahh~ not again," Julian said, already moving, already halfway to the door before conscious thought caught up with his body. "He did it again, his not getting away not this time..."

He tore down the hallway, bare feet slapping fast against stone, ignoring startled students who scattered out of his path, taking the stairs two and three at a time, the fox streaking ahead of him in a blur of fur and motion, both of them driven by the same desperate need to catch something that had already proven twice over that it couldn’t be caught.

Julian burst out into the courtyard exactly where the archway stood, chest heaving, eyes sweeping wildly across every visible corner.

Empty. No trace. No lingering warmth where a body might have stood. No footprints in the soft dirt lining the archway’s edge. Nothing at all except the ordinary bustle of academy life carrying on exactly as it had a moment before, utterly indifferent to the fact that something had just been standing there, watching, smirking, promising.

"he’s gone again," the fox said, breathless despite not needing to breathe, spinning in a tight, frustrated circle. "host, this unit swears, the second we get close he simply isn’t there anymore, like he can sense the exact moment before..."

Julian didn’t answer right away, standing frozen in the middle of the courtyard, chest still heaving, eyes locked on the empty archway where that smirk had been burned into his memory only seconds before.

’he wanted me to see him,’ Julian thought slowly, ice creeping down his spine despite the warm morning sun. ’he wasn’t hiding this time. he stood right there in broad daylight, let me see his face clearly, and waited until I noticed before he left.’

"host," the fox said quietly, sensing the shift in him, "what are you thinking."

"I’m thinking," Julian said, voice low and tight, "that he’s not hiding from me because he can’t be seen. he’s choosing when I see him. which means whatever he’s planning..." Julian’s jaw clenched hard, eyes still fixed on that empty archway, "...he’s not in any hurry at all. he’s just letting me know he can reach me whenever he wants. day or night. awake or asleep."

The fox went very still beside him, tails drooping for the first time since Julian had met it, all trace of yesterday’s chaos and this morning’s laughter completely gone.

"that," it said quietly, "is significantly more unsettling than this unit would like to admit."
