Reborn as an SSS-Rank Guide in the Sentinel Academy [BL]

Chapter 27: This Unit

Julian stood in the courtyard a moment longer, still catching his breath, before a thought that had nothing to do with the mysterious man finally pushed its way to the front of his mind.

"hey," he said, glancing down at the fox still standing tense and alert beside him. "why do you always say ’this unit’ before everything. you’ve had a whole personality shift, you argue with me constantly, you laughed so hard at Mika you nearly fell off a windowsill. but you still talk like a formal report half the time."

The fox blinked up at him, apparently caught off guard by the sudden shift in topic. "Oh that, just old habit of mine," it said. "this unit was built with a formal reporting structure. even after this unit adopted a more... expressive format, some patterns simply stuck."

"it’s just a little weird," Julian admitted. "cute little fox demon, sasses me constantly, then talks like it’s filing a compliance report."

The fox’s ears flattened slightly, tails drooping just a fraction. "if you don’t like it then," it said, quieter than usual, something almost uncertain in it, "this unit will stop saying it."

Julian paused, catching the small shift in its tone, and felt something soften in his chest despite the tension still coiled tight from the last few minutes. "no," he said. "keep it. it’s yours. I was just curious about it that’s all nothing more."

The fox’s tails perked back up slightly, though it didn’t say anything else on the matter, just gave a small, satisfied huff and settled back into its usual posture, apparently deciding the conversation was closed.

"okay," Julian said, dragging his focus back to the actual problem. "Now back to business shall we."

---

He found Reid less than an hour later, going over border reports in one of the academy’s side offices, and gave him the short version... someone dangerous had approached him last night, he’d handled it, it wouldn’t happen again.

That was all he said. Reid’s eyes narrowed slightly, clearly sensing there was more beneath the surface of that carefully clipped summary, but Julian held his gaze steady, giving nothing else away, and after a long moment Reid simply nodded, accepting it without pushing further.

’now this is how it goes,’ Julian thought, already turning to leave. ’less people involved, less complicated. I don’t need protection. I’ve survived worse than one smug stranger who likes lurking in shadows.’

He didn’t mention the courtyard. Didn’t mention the smirk, or the wave, or the cold certainty that had settled into his chest watching the man vanish in broad daylight without a single soul noticing but him. Some things, Julian had learned a long time ago, were better handled quietly, without an audience of worried Sentinels hovering over every move he made.

He wasn’t afraid. He refused to be afraid. Fear made people careless, made them make mistakes, and Julian had buried too many people who’d made mistakes born out of fear to let himself fall into that same trap now.

He’d handle this the same way he handled everything else. Alone, if he had to. Carefully. Patiently. Until he had something solid enough to act on.

---

That evening, back in the quiet of his own room, Julian sat cross-legged on his bed with the fox curled in his lap, turning the morning’s events over and over, trying to make sense of something that refused to fit into any shape he recognized.

"ok what now," Julian said. "let’s actually think this through properly. what do we know."

"Um we know," the fox said, tail flicking thoughtfully, "that he can conceal his presence completely from this unit’s senses, except when he chooses not to. And we also know he can vanish without leaving any residual trace whatsoever, which should not be possible for any classification this unit has on record. and we know," its ears flattened slightly, "that this unit has genuinely never encountered anything quite like him before."

[Correction. This unit has partial data.]

Julian sat up slightly. "So you’ve got something?"

[Uncertain. Preliminary analysis only. But the pattern is familiar in one specific way.]

’That’s interesting go on.’

[The individual’s presence signature, when briefly detectable, carries a resonance similar to corrupted Aberration energy... specifically, the higher classification variant encountered during the breach. However, unlike standard corrupted entities, this individual appears to retain full cognitive function, verbal capability, and what could be described as deliberate, controlled behavior.]

The fox’s ears perked sharply. "So what you’re trying to say that, this mysterious person, he’s a zombie~."

[A hypothesis. A high-classification variant, one capable of consuming and fully assuming the form and memories of a human host, rather than simply mimicking fragments the way the corrupted echo did on the battlefield. If accurate, this would explain both his ability to move undetected among ordinary humans, and the corrupted resonance briefly detected in his presence.]

Julian’s stomach turned cold. "you’re telling me there’s a zombie walking around this academy freely that looks completely human. talks completely normal. nobody’s noticed anything wrong with him at all."

[That is the hypothesis, yes.]

"that’s not possible," Julian said slowly, even as some old, ugly memory stirred in the back of his mind, something he’d buried a long time ago and never wanted to dig back up. "the ones from my old world didn’t... they couldn’t even talk. couldn’t think. couldn’t plan. they were just hunger, that’s all they were, hunger and instinct..."

[Host. This unit acknowledges the disturbing implication. However, the corrupted echo encountered during the breach also demonstrated speech and apparent memory retention, despite being, by all standard classifications, still simply an Aberration. It is possible that in this world, certain rare, higher-order corruptions develop capabilities that did not exist in host’s previous world. Evolution, in a sense. Adaptation to a new environment.]

Julian sat with that for a long moment, the weight of it settling heavy and wrong in his chest. "so somewhere out there," he said slowly, "there’s a zombie smart enough to hunt me specifically. patient enough to wait. controlled enough to walk through a courtyard full of Sentinels without a single alarm going off."

"which really brings up the real problem," the fox said, tails going still and tense. "how. this academy has wards, alarm systems, dozens of trained Sentinels on constant watch. something classified as corrupted should trigger every single one of those defenses the second it crosses the boundary. and yet he walked right through the front courtyard in broad daylight without a single alarm sounding."

Julian’s jaw tightened. "unless he’s not crossing the boundary at all. unless he’s already inside it. living here. eating in the same hall. sleeping in the same wing. wearing some ordinary face nobody would actually think twice about."

The room went quiet, the implication of that settling heavy between them.

"that," the fox said finally, voice tight, "is an extremely unpleasant thought."

"Mm yeah," Julian muttered, rubbing at his eyes, exhaustion from the sleepless night finally starting to drag at every limb despite the fresh spike of adrenaline. "welcome to my life."

[Recommend host rest,] the System added. [Continued sleep deprivation will impair judgment and combat readiness, both of which host will require if this hypothesis proves accurate.]

’kind of hard to rest knowing there might be a zombie wearing somebody’s face two doors down.’

[Understood. Recommend host rest regardless. This unit will maintain watch.]

Julian glanced down at the fox, who nodded solemnly, tails curling protectively around itself like it was settling in for a long night ahead. "this unit will not sleep," it said. "this unit does not need to. this unit will alert you the instant anything changes."

Julian studied it for a moment, something warm cutting faintly through the cold unease sitting in his chest. "Ok thanks but if you...," he said quietly.

"don’t get sentimental about it," the fox said, though its tails betrayed it, curling just slightly closer against his side. "this unit simply prefers a functional host over an exhausted one. purely practical."

Julian huffed something close to a laugh despite everything, and finally let himself lie back against the pillows, eyes heavy, body finally giving in to the exhaustion it had been fighting since the night before.

---

Sleep came fast and heavy, dragging him down before he’d even fully settled, and for a while there was nothing at all, just blank, dreamless dark, the kind of rest his body had been screaming for since the moment he woke up in this world.

Then, faint at first, barely a whisper, something curled through the darkness of his sleep, soft and intimate, close enough that it felt like breath against his ear even though there was nothing there at all. "Julian."

His own name, spoken low and slow and satisfied, the exact voice from the bathhouse, the exact voice from the courtyard, curling through the edges of his sleeping mind like smoke finding every gap in a locked door.

"I’m coming for you."
