Reborn as an SSS-Rank Guide in the Sentinel Academy [BL]

Chapter 21: Not Today, Not Ever

Julian woke up the next morning feeling almost human again, which, given everything the day before had thrown at him, felt like a small miracle in itself.

[Host’s reserves have recovered to eighty-three percent,] the fox announced from somewhere near his pillow, sounding entirely too pleased about it. [Impressive recovery speed, actually. This unit suggests host use today to practice channeling output more efficiently. Master that, and this unit has a new power in mind. Something beyond standard Guide functions entirely.]

Julian cracked one eye open. "beyond standard. what’s that supposed to mean."

"a reward," the fox said, hopping up onto his chest and settling there like it belonged, "for actually listening to this unit’s recommendations for once, which, historically, has been a rare event. practice today. earn it."

"you’re bribing me."

"I’m motivating you. there’s a difference." The fox’s tails swished, smug. "also, get up. you’ve been asleep long enough that this unit is bored, and a bored System is a dangerous System."

"that sentence should not be threatening, and yet."

Julian dragged himself out of bed, stretching muscles that ached but didn’t scream anymore, and spent the better part of the morning out in a quiet corner of the training yard, practicing exactly what the fox told him to... small, controlled pulses of light instead of the desperate all-or-nothing bursts he’d been throwing around since yesterday. It actually helped. By midmorning his hands weren’t shaking with the effort anymore, and something about that steady, focused work felt almost peaceful, the first properly quiet stretch of time he’d had since dying on a wall in another world. Of course, it didn’t last.

"well, well," came a voice dripping with false sweetness, and Julian didn’t even need to turn around to know exactly who’d decided to ruin his morning. "recovering nicely, are we?"

Mika strolled up with Logan trailing a few steps behind him, looking distinctly like he hadn’t wanted to come at all.

The fox, curled invisible around Julian’s shoulders, let out a groan only Julian could hear. "him again. this unit was enjoying the peace."

’yeah you and me both’

"what do you want, Mika," Julian said flatly, not bothering to turn around fully.

"nothing much," Mika said, drifting closer, entirely too close, reaching up like he intended to tuck a strand of hair back off Julian’s face, voice dropping low like he was about to whisper something meant just for him. "just thought I’d remind you that no matter how many titles you collect, you’ll never really..."

Julian shoved him backward, flat palm to the chest, hard enough that Mika stumbled two full steps before catching himself.

"don’t touch me," Julian said, cold and final. "and don’t whisper in my ear like we’re friends. we tried this yesterday, remember? I slapped you. did that lesson not stick, or do you just enjoy repeat humiliation?"

Mika’s face went red with fury. "you arrogant..."

"say it," Julian cut in. "go on. call me arrogant. see how that lands, coming from the guy who got publicly rejected by his own crush and decided the healthiest response was harassing his ex’s replacement. real stable stuff, Mika. real healthy hobby you’ve got going."

Logan flinched slightly at "ex’s replacement," and Mika sputtered, clearly having nothing ready to fire back with, before turning on his heel and stalking off in a huff.

Logan lingered. "Julian," he started, voice quieter than Julian had heard from him since the whole engagement disaster, something careful and uncertain in it. "can we talk. actually talk, not..."

"no," Julian said, not even unkindly, just tired. "I’ve had enough talking for one lifetime, and it’s not even noon."

Logan’s jaw tightened, something wounded flickering behind his eyes, but he didn’t push, just gave a short nod and walked off in the opposite direction Mika had gone, shoulders tense the whole way.

’thank goodness’ Julian thought, letting out a long breath. ’one crisis avoided.’

[Host, incoming,] the fox said suddenly, ears perking. [Imperial messenger. Bearing a package. This should be interesting.]

Sure enough, a young attendant in palace colors approached a moment later, carrying an ornate box wrapped in gold cloth, bowing low before holding it out. "a gift," the attendant said, "from His Majesty the Emperor, for Guide Valerian."

Julian stared at the box like it might bite him.

"open it," the fox said, tails twitching with curiosity despite its earlier wariness of the Emperor. "this unit is dying to know."

Julian took the box, unwrapped it slow, and found inside a stunning necklace, gold and heavy, set with a single deep red stone that practically glowed even in the daylight.

The attendant beamed. "His Majesty selected it personally. he said it would suit you."

Julian stared at it for a long moment, then looked up at the attendant with a completely flat expression.

"tell His Majesty," Julian said, closing the box shut with a firm click, "that I appreciate the effort, but I don’t accept gifts from men who ask me to marry them and then tell me my answer doesn’t matter. tell him to save the jewelry for someone who says yes."

The attendant’s face went pale. "Guide Valerian, I really don’t think I can relay that message word for..."

"say it word for word," Julian said, shoving the box back into the attendant’s arms. "every syllable. I’ll wait."

The attendant, looking thoroughly terrified now, bowed hastily and scurried off, box clutched tight to his chest like it might explode.

The fox cackled outright. "oh, this unit is going to enjoy whatever happens next."

Julian barely had time to feel satisfied with himself before a new voice cut in from behind, low and amused, entirely too close for someone who definitely wasn’t supposed to be standing there.

"you gave my own gift back to my own messenger," the Emperor said, "with an insult attached. I have to say, Guide Valerian. nobody’s done that to me before."

Julian turned around slowly, heart sinking straight through the floor. "how are you already here," Julian said.

The Emperor’s mouth curved into that same unsettling, satisfied smile from yesterday.

"I told you," he said quietly. "your no doesn’t change anything. so tell me, Julian... what exactly will it take?"
