Julian woke up feeling almost normal for once, which should have been his first warning sign that the universe was about to ruin it.
"you’re finally awake," the fox announced from its perch on the windowsill, tails swishing with barely contained energy. "good. this unit has been bored for six straight hours. do you know how long six hours feels when you’re a magical being of immense power with absolutely nothing to do?"
"you could’ve slept," Julian said, sitting up and stretching muscles that finally didn’t scream in protest.
"this unit does not sleep all the time, you know. this unit observes." The fox’s golden eyes narrowed with something that looked suspiciously like mischief. "and this unit has observed that you are surrounded by people who claim to care about you, and this unit thinks it’s time to test the sincerity of those claims."
Julian felt a headache building already. "test them how."
"Oh yeah you’ll see," the fox said, and hopped down off the windowsill with the smug energy of a creature that had already decided today was going to be entertaining, regardless of Julian’s opinion on the matter.
---
Breakfast in the academy hall was, as usual, loud and crowded, and Julian had barely sat down with his tray before the fox... invisible to everyone but him... perched itself directly on the table and began providing running commentary.
"Ok that one," it said, nodding toward a passing student, "has spinach in his teeth and does not know it. this unit finds that deeply satisfying for reasons this unit cannot fully explain."
Julian choked slightly on his juice, covering it with a cough.
"you alright?" Reid asked from across the table, eyebrow raised.
"fine," Julian managed. "Just swallowed wrong."
"that one," the fox continued, undeterred, now gesturing at a Sentinel three tables over, "just tripped over absolutely nothing and is currently pretending it was intentional. this unit respects the commitment to the lie."
Julian’s mouth twitched despite himself, and he had to bite the inside of his cheek to keep a straight face.
"Julian," Jayden said, sliding into the seat beside him with his usual easy confidence, "you’re making a very strange face."
"digestion," Julian said immediately.
The fox cackled. Jayden studied him a beat longer, clearly unconvinced, before letting it go and reaching for the fruit at the center of the table.
Which was exactly when the fox decided things needed to get interesting.
A single grape lifted itself off the plate, hovered for a suspended second, and flicked directly into Jayden’s water glass with a small, deliberate plop.
Jayden blinked at his glass. "did that grape just..."
"Now this is fate," the fox announced solemnly, apparently very pleased with itself. "the universe has spoken. tell him it’s fate, Julian."
’i am not doing that.’ Julian said to the fox in his mind.
"it’s probably just fate," Julian said out loud before his brain caught up with his mouth, and immediately wanted to sink through the floor.
Jayden stared at him. "Huh...fate..."
"the universe works in strange ways," Julian said weakly, refusing to acknowledge the fox’s delighted cackling in his skull.
Reid, watching this entire exchange with the flat, patient expression of a man who had clearly given up trying to understand Julian’s occasional bouts of nonsense, simply reached over and fished the grape out of Jayden’s glass without comment.
"this unit had a whole bit," the fox complained. "you ruined the bit, Commander😠."
’he can’t hear you dumb fox.’
"doesn’t matter. this unit still feels disrespected."
---
Logan found them a few minutes later, sliding into the seat across from Julian with the careful, slightly uncertain energy of someone still testing whether he was welcome after yesterday’s confession. "morning," he said, not quite meeting Julian’s eyes.
"morning," Julian said, and immediately felt the fox go rigid with interest beside him.
"oh yes, this one," the fox said, tails swishing with anticipation. "this unit has an idea."
’and what is that idea of yours.’
"this unit has an excellent idea."
’whatever it is, don’t do it.’
The fox ignored him completely, and Julian felt a strange, tingling pressure settle over his own face, like something was gently... pointedly... pulling the corners of his mouth upward into the softest, most besotted expression imaginable, aimed directly across the table at Logan.
Logan blinked. "...are you okay?"
"I’m fine," Julian said, fighting his own face with everything he had, which turned out to be considerably less control than he thought he possessed. "why?"
"you’re looking at me like..." Logan’s ears actually went slightly pink, "...like you used to. before."
’stop it. stop it. stop it right now.’
"this unit is simply testing whether Logan’s affection is durable enough to survive an unexplained facial expression," the fox said primly. "this is called science."
’this is you being a menace.’
"same thing, but just different word." The fox said.
Julian forced his face back into something neutral through sheer willpower, and Logan cleared his throat, looking flustered and hopeful in a way that made Julian want to bury his own head in his breakfast.
Across the table, Reid watched the whole thing unfold with the deep, weary patience of a man who had accepted that mornings around Julian were simply never going to be normal again.
---
It was Mika, unfortunately, who provided the real highlight of the morning.
He appeared near the food table with his usual entourage of admirers trailing behind, and the fox’s ears perked up immediately, tails going stiff with pure, focused intent.
"ooh yes," it said, voice dropping into something gleeful. " this is what this unit has been waiting for."
’what are you doing.’ Julian said to the fox.
"testing fate," the fox said, and Julian watched in genuine horror as a stray serving tray... perfectly innocent, perfectly stationary a moment ago... tilted itself with impossible precision directly into Mika’s path just as he took his next confident, preening step forward.
Mika’s foot caught the edge of it. What followed happened almost in slow motion: Mika’s arms windmilled, his dignity visibly evaporating in real time, and he pitched forward directly into the dessert table, both hands sinking wrist-deep into an enormous bowl of custard before the rest of him followed with a spectacular, undignified splat.
The entire hall went dead silent for one beautiful, suspended second. Then it erupted into laughter.
Mika sat up slowly, custard dripping off his face, his perfectly styled hair now plastered flat and yellow, sputtering with fury as half the academy howled around him.
"Who was it? who did that," Mika shrieked, wiping custard furiously from his eyes. "who tripped me?!"
"nobody touched you," someone called out between fits of laughter. "you just fell yourself!"
"THAT’S MPOSSIBLE," Mika bellowed, custard dripping off his chin with each word, which only made the crowd laugh harder.
Julian, doing everything humanly possible to keep his expression neutral, felt his shoulders shaking with the effort of not laughing outright.
"See this unit," the fox announced with the deep satisfaction of an artist admiring a masterpiece, "considers that a resounding success."
’you’re going to get me killed damnit.’
"nonsense. this unit is protecting your reputation by ensuring your enemies suffer maximum public humiliation. that’s practically a public service."
Logan, across the table, was laughing so hard he had tears in his eyes, and even Reid had cracked something that might generously be called a smile, watching Mika flail dramatically in a puddle of custard while insisting to anyone who’d listen that some invisible force had personally targeted him.
"it was FATE," Mika screeched, apparently deciding that was a better excuse than admitting he’d simply tripped, "some cursed force is clearly TARGETING me..."
"that," the fox said, positively vibrating with delight, "is the funniest thing this unit has ever witnessed, and this unit has witnessed several apocalypses."
Julian finally lost the battle with his own face and dissolved into helpless laughter along with the rest of the hall, unable to stop even as Mika shot him a look of pure, custard-dripping betrayal from across the room.
"you," Mika hissed, pointing an accusing, custard-covered finger at Julian, "you did something. I know you did."
"Nope I didn’t. I didn’t even touched you," Julian managed between laughs, which was, at least, entirely true.
"then explain the grape," Jayden added unhelpfully, still grinning. "or the tray. or whatever fate has apparently been up to this morning."
Mika made a sound like a furious teakettle and stormed off toward the washrooms, custard squelching in his boots with every step, leaving a trail of dessert behind him and half the hall still in stitches.
"best morning this unit has had since transmigrating alongside you," the fox declared happily, curling up smug and satisfied against Julian’s side. "this unit award itself full marks."
’you’re a menace and I hate you for that.’ Julian said.
"Actually you’re welcome," the fox said, entirely unbothered.
---
The rest of the day passed easier than any since Julian had woken up in this world, training and small errands filling the hours, the earlier tension of the vault and the corruption fading into the background just enough to let him breathe.
By evening, worn out in the good way this time instead of the collapsing way, Julian made his way to the bathhouse attached to his wing, grateful for the promise of hot water and a few minutes of actual peace after a day that had somehow managed to be both chaotic and, for once, genuinely fun.
The fox, curled on a folded towel near the entrance, had finally gone quiet, apparently having exhausted its mischief for one day.
Julian sank into the steaming water with a long, contented sigh, letting his head tip back, muscles finally unwinding properly for the first time since he’d woken up in this body.
’okay now,’ he thought, eyes drifting shut. ’that was actually a good day. first one since I got here.’
He didn’t notice, tucked deep in the shadows just beyond the reach of the bathhouse’s low lantern light, a figure standing motionless, watching him with quiet, patient stillness.
The figure’s mouth curved slowly into a slow, satisfied smirk.
"Julian," the voice said softly, barely more than a breath against the steam-filled air.
