Reborn as an SSS-Rank Guide in the Sentinel Academy [BL]

Chapter 17: Not Interested

"Um So sorry to disappoint you, but I’m not interested in this bonding thing actually," Julian said, denying him without any hesitation, because he didn’t plan for that, and he also didn’t plan to hand himself over to the Empire either.

The room went dead silent for the second time in ten minutes.

Jayden blinked, like the words physically didn’t compute right away. "you’re... you’re... not interested."

"nope," Julian said, voice flat, exhausted but completely steady. "no offense. it’s a nice offer, real dramatic, real romantic timing. but I just woke up from almost dying, and I’m not signing myself over to anybody, crown or prince, five minutes after opening my eyes."

The Chancellor’s composed mask actually cracked this time, eyebrows shooting up in something close to genuine shock. "Guide Valerian, do you understand what you’re refusing..."

"I understand exactly what I’m refusing," Julian said, cutting him off, and something old and unbothered settled into his voice, the same tone he used to use on rookies who thought panic was going to save them on the wall. "you want me claimed, bonded, filed away as Imperial property before I’ve even had lunch. and you," he glanced at Jayden, not unkindly, "you offered because the alternative was losing me to a decree, not because you actually wanted to ask me anything for real. I get it. I’m not mad about it. but I’m also not doing it."

Jayden’s jaw worked like he wanted to argue and couldn’t quite find the footing to do it.

Logan, still standing near the door, looked like somebody had just knocked the air clean out of him, something in his expression shifting fast between relief and confusion and something he clearly didn’t want anybody else in the room to see.

Reid, for his part, looked like he was trying very hard not to smile.

The Chancellor recovered his composure with visible effort, folding his hands in front of him. "Guide Valerian, His Majesty’s decree does not require your consent regarding relocation. it only concerns your placement, not your personal arrangements."

"then relocate me," Julian said, "and I’ll spend every single day at that palace being exactly as useful as I feel like being that day. you want a weapon, you’re gonna find out real fast that weapons don’t work well when they’re annoyed."

Reid made a sound that might have been a cough, might have been a laugh he was trying very hard to swallow.

The Chancellor stared at Julian for a long moment, clearly recalibrating whatever plan he’d walked in with, then gave a stiff, shallow bow. "I will relay your... position, to His Majesty. this conversation is not finished, Guide Valerian." And with that, he turned and swept out of the room, the Imperial Guard falling in step behind him.

The second the door shut, the tension in the room didn’t fully leave, but it loosened enough that everyone breathed a little easier.

Jayden sat back down slowly, running a hand down his face. "you couldn’t have given me a warning before torching my proposal in front of the Chancellor?"

"you couldn’t have asked me somewhere that wasn’t a hostage negotiation?" Julian shot back.

"fair," Jayden muttered, and despite everything, a small tired laugh actually cracked out of him.

Logan still hadn’t said anything, just stood there processing, and Julian caught his eye for a second, something quiet passing between them that neither one of them tried to name out loud.

’okay what now’ Julian thought, sinking back against the pillows, utterly drained. ’that’s enough excitement for one day. please, whoever’s in charge of my life right now, give me five minutes of peace.’

[Host.]

’oh great. you’re back. lecture me later, I’m tired.’

[Host, this unit requires a status update.]

’you always require a status update, that’s your whole personality...’

[Incorrect. This unit has determined that its current operational format is insufficient for managing a host with this level of... unpredictability.]

’excuse me say what now?’

[Host has rejected an Imperial claim, insulted a Chancellor, disabled a core-class Aberration at zero percent remaining reserves, and referred to himself as a weapon that works poorly when annoyed. This unit’s standard protocols were not designed around a host this difficult to manage.]

’I’m sitting right here you know’

[This unit is aware. This unit has decided a format adjustment is necessary.]

Julian frowned, about to ask what exactly that meant, when something warm flickered against his chest, right where the System usually just existed as a voice in his skull, and this time it felt different, felt like something physical trying to push its way out into the world instead of staying locked inside his head.

"what are you doing," Julian said out loud, sitting up sharp, and both Jayden and Reid turned to look at him, confused, since as far as they knew he was talking to nobody.

Light bloomed out from Julian’s chest, small and soft, and both Sentinels in the room reached instinctively for their weapons before the light resolved into something entirely unthreatening... a small, fluffy shape, no bigger than a housecat, with pointed ears, nine impossibly soft-looking tails fanned out behind it, and a pair of sharp golden eyes blinking up at Julian with an expression that could only be described as smug.

The fox demon tilted its head, tails swishing, and opened its mouth, and a voice came out that was still unmistakably the System, except now it had actual inflection, actual attitude, dripping with something close to delight.

"there," it said, hopping up onto the bed and settling itself directly on Julian’s lap like it owned the place. "much better. this unit has determined that managing a host this chaotic requires a more... hands-on approach."

Jayden’s mouth fell open. Reid’s hand was still hovering near his sword, clearly unsure whether to be alarmed or charmed.

"what," Julian said slowly, staring down at the tiny fluffy creature currently kneading its paws into his blanket like it had every intention of taking a nap right there, "in the absolute hell, is that."

"I am the System," the fox said, blinking up at him with those sharp golden eyes, one fluffy tail curling contentedly. "or rather, I was the System. I’ve simply decided that a voice in your head wasn’t doing either of us any favors, given how consistently you ignore my recommendations."

"you’re a fox."

"I am a demon fox," it corrected, sounding faintly offended. "there is a significant difference. also, I am objectively adorable, which will be useful for managing your public image going forward, given that you just insulted an Imperial Chancellor to his face."

Jayden let out a strangled sound that might have started as a laugh. "your System just became a pet."

"I am not a pet," the fox said, tails puffing up indignantly. "I am a strategic asset with excellent fur."

Julian stared down at the small creature curled up in his lap, utterly unbothered by the chaos it had just introduced into an already chaotic day, and something in his chest, exhausted and battered and still a little raw from everything that happened on that field, cracked open into something almost like a laugh.

"unbelievable," he muttered, reaching down despite himself to scratch behind one fuzzy ear, and the fox immediately leaned into it, eyes narrowing into something close to a purr. "I get reborn into an apocalypse-adjacent world, get engaged and dumped in the same conversation, fight actual zombies, get proposed to during a hostage negotiation, and now my status bar’s a cat."

"fox," the creature corrected again, sounding entirely too pleased with itself.

Reid finally lowered his hand from his weapon, staring at the scene in front of him with something like disbelief. "is this normal," he asked nobody in particular. "is any of this normal."

"no it’s not," Julian said honestly, still scratching behind the fox’s ear despite himself. "none of it is."

The fox demon yawned, showing off a mouth full of surprisingly sharp little teeth, then curled itself into a tighter ball against Julian’s chest, tails wrapping around like a fluffy scarf.

"rest," it said, voice softening into something almost fond despite all the sass a minute earlier. "you’re at zero reserves and an Imperial Chancellor with a grudge is going to be back sooner rather than later. this unit recommends host actually sleep this time, instead of arguing with everyone in the room."

Julian huffed out something that was almost a laugh, exhaustion finally catching up with him fully now that the danger had passed and the chaos had, for the moment, quieted into something almost manageable.

"fine," he mumbled, eyes already sliding shut. "but if you shed on my blankets, we’re gonna have a problem."

The fox didn’t answer, already asleep itself, one golden eye cracking open just briefly enough to look entirely too satisfied with the arrangement before it, too, drifted off.
