Julian woke up slow, the way you wake up when your whole body’s decided it’s still recovering from something even if your mind’s already caught up.
Warm. Quiet. Soft sheets underneath him instead of dirt and blood. For a second his brain tried to convince him he was back in that first room, waking up into this world all over again, except this time there was no confusion about where he was, just a heavy, bone-deep tiredness sitting on top of him like a physical weight.
’okay’ he thought. ’still alive. Thank God, that’s a good start.’
[Confirmed. Host is alive. System was concerned for approximately four hours.]
’you get concerned now don’t you’
[System has always been capable of concern. Host simply never depleted reserves to zero percent before.]
’Um that’s fair’
Julian cracked his eyes open properly, and the room came into focus slow... pale stone walls, tall windows letting in soft afternoon light, and three people crowded into a space clearly meant for one patient and a chair, not three grown Sentinels hovering like they’d all been arguing quietly about who got to stand closest to the bed.
Jayden was closest, sitting on the edge of a chair pulled right up against the bed, and the second Julian’s eyes opened his whole posture snapped tight, relief crashing across his face so fast it looked almost painful.
"Ah finally you’re awake," Jayden said, voice rougher than Julian had heard from him yet.
"apparently, I guess so," Julian rasped, throat dry as sand.
Reid stood a little further back, arms crossed, but the tension in his shoulders eased visibly the second Julian spoke. "you scared the hell out of every medic in this building," he said. "zero reserves. nobody’s supposed to survive dropping to zero reserves, let alone wake up talking like nothing has ever happened."
"So what, guess I’m special," Julian said, and even exhausted, even wrecked, some old habit of deflecting with a joke kicked in anyway.
And then, standing near the door, half in shadow like he wasn’t sure he had the right to be in the room at all, was Logan.
Julian blinked at him. "didn’t expect you to be here."
Logan’s jaw tightened, and for a second he looked like he might just turn and leave without saying anything at all. "I heard what happened," he said instead, voice quieter than Julian had ever heard it, none of that cold arrogance from the hall left in it anymore. "I heard you went in after the core alone. that you used everything you had and kept going past the point anybody should’ve kept going."
"pretty much," Julian said.
"that’s insane," Logan said, and it didn’t sound like an insult this time, it sounded almost like something closer to awe, tangled up with something that looked a lot like guilt. "you could have died. you almost did die."
"I’ve had worse odds," Julian said, and meant it, though nobody in that room understood exactly how true that was.
[Host. Reminder: current reserves have not fully regenerated. Recommend host avoid emotionally taxing conversations while recovering.]
’kind of hard to avoid that right now system’
Reid cleared his throat, stepping forward, expression shifting into something more businesslike, the commander mask sliding back into place even though something warmer still sat underneath it. "you took out a core-class Aberration that our own records don’t have a category for," he said. "single-handed. that’s not something that stays quiet, Julian. word’s already moving faster than any of us can control it."
Julian’s stomach tightened at that. "and how fast is it."
"fast enough," Reid said, "that we’re not the only ones who already know."
Right on cue, footsteps echoed down the hallway outside, brisk and formal, and a moment later the door opened without so much as a knock, revealing a man in ceremonial armor Julian’s borrowed memories immediately screamed a title at.
Imperial Guard. Direct from the palace.
The man stepped inside, posture rigid, and behind him came someone else entirely... older, dressed in robes heavy with gold thread, carrying himself with the particular weight of somebody used to rooms going quiet the second they walked into them.
Jayden shot to his feet immediately. "Chancellor," he said, tone shifting fast into something formal and wary all at once. "this is unexpected."
"is it," the Chancellor said, eyes sweeping the room once before settling on Julian in the bed, sharp and assessing, like he was measuring exactly how much value was lying in front of him. "an SSS-Rank Guide appears out of nowhere, single-handedly destroys a core-class Aberration the border command has never even successfully identified before, and you’re surprised the palace sent someone."
Reid’s arms crossed tighter. "he’s recovering. whatever this is, it can wait."
"it cannot," the Chancellor said, not unkindly, but with the flat certainty of a man who genuinely believed that. He turned his full attention back to Julian, and something in his expression shifted into a careful, practiced kind of warmth, the kind Julian recognized immediately as performance. "Julian Valerian. on behalf of His Majesty the Emperor, I am here to formally claim you as a ward of the Imperial Court." The room went dead silent.
"claim me," Julian repeated slowly, pushing himself up a little straighter against the pillows despite every muscle in his body protesting the movement. "claim me how, exactly."
"the Empire has never possessed an SSS-Rank Guide," the Chancellor said. "a resource of your caliber cannot simply remain the property of an academy, or attached to whatever personal engagements or arrangements you may have made prior to your rank being revealed. His Majesty requires you brought under direct Imperial protection and Imperial service, effective immediately."
Jayden’s expression darkened fast. "you’re talking about him like he’s a weapon you’re requisitioning."
"I am talking about him," the Chancellor said evenly, "like the single most valuable Guide this Empire has ever produced, which is precisely what he is. and precisely why he requires protection that an academy simply cannot provide."
"and if I say no then," Julian said.
The Chancellor’s polite mask didn’t crack, but something colder flickered behind his eyes for just a second. "you misunderstand. this isn’t a request, Guide Valerian. it’s a formal claim, backed by Imperial decree. you’ll be relocated to the palace within the week, once medical clearance permits travel."
’oh great’ Julian thought, exhaustion mixing with a fresh spike of frustration. ’I survive an apocalypse, get reborn, get dumped, get attacked by monsters wearing my dead friend’s face, and now I’m getting drafted by an empire before I’ve even finished healing.’
[Host. Advisable to remain calm. Direct confrontation with Imperial authority carries significant political risk.]
’yeah I figured that much out myself’
Reid stepped forward, voice low and hard. "Chancellor, respectfully, he just fought a battle that nearly killed him defending this Empire’s border. maybe give him more than four hours before deciding what happens to the rest of his life."
"His Majesty’s decree already accounts for recovery time," the Chancellor said smoothly. "I am simply here to deliver the news personally, given the... unusual circumstances of Guide Valerian’s rank."
Jayden’s jaw was tight enough that Julian could see the muscle working from across the room. "the crown already has a claim through me," Jayden said, voice sharp now, all pretense of easy charm gone. "I made my intentions toward Guide Valerian known the day his rank was revealed."
"an intention," the Chancellor said, "is not a formal bond, Your Highness. and until one exists, His Majesty’s claim supersedes personal ones."
The way Jayden’s eyes flicked toward Julian then, something raw and urgent underneath all that royal composure, told Julian exactly what was about to come out of his mouth before he even said it.
"then we’ll form one," Jayden said. "today."
The Chancellor’s eyebrows rose slightly, the first genuine crack of surprise in his composed expression all conversation. "Your Highness, a formal Sentinel-Guide bond is not something entered into lightly, particularly not with the Empire’s first SSS-Rank..."
"I’m aware of exactly what it is," Jayden said, cutting him off, and then he turned to face Julian directly, something raw and searching in his expression that Julian hadn’t seen from him yet, not the teasing prince from the hall, not the fighter from the battlefield, something underneath both of those.
"I know this isn’t fair to ask you right now," Jayden said, quieter now, just for him. "I know you just woke up, I know you almost died a few hours ago, and I know you didn’t ask for any of this. but if I don’t do something right now, the crown takes you whether you want it or not, and I refuse to let that happen to you."
Julian stared at him, exhaustion and frustration and something else entirely tangled up tight in his chest, and somewhere behind Jayden, Logan’s face had gone pale and still, and Reid’s jaw had locked hard enough to show the muscle.
"so," Jayden said, holding his gaze steady despite everything, "Julian Valerian. will you bond with me?"
