Julian pressed his hand harder against the mark, the strange, distant wrongness still pulsing faint beneath his palm, and forced his voice steady even as frustration boiled hot beneath his ribs.
"system," he said, low and urgent. "give me something. a way out. anything."
[Analyzing available options.]
A long pause followed, longer than Julian liked, the System’s silence stretching out until dread started curling cold in his stomach even before it spoke again.
[Host. This unit has run every viable scenario available with current information. None result in a clean escape. Recommend host cease active resistance temporarily and observe rather than confront.]
’that’s not an answer, that’s called surrender with extra steps.’
[This unit is aware. However, direct confrontation carries severe risk. If host provokes Xavier past a certain threshold, or attempts an escape that fails, analysis suggests probability of host being forcibly converted into a weaponized asset... a corrupted vessel retaining combat ability but under Xavier’s direct control. Such an outcome would grant Xavier a weapon capable of dismantling Sentinel defenses from within, converting additional victims at scale, and potentially compromising the capital itself.]
Julian’s blood went cold. ’you’re saying if I push too hard and lose, I become the thing that destroys everyone I’m trying to protect.’
[That is this unit’s current risk assessment, yes.]
Julian sat with that for a long, silent moment, the weight of it pressing down harder than anything Xavier had said to his face so far. He’d spent three years holding a line, dying to protect people who never even knew his name. He’d transmigrated into a whole new life, clawed his way up from nothing, survived monsters and Emperors and a stranger who wanted to own him piece by piece... and now the System was telling him that one wrong move could turn him into the exact horror he’d spent his entire second life trying to stop.
’why did I even end up here, I should have stay dead,’ Julian thought, bitter and exhausted, staring blankly at the ceiling. ’I held that gate. I did my part. and instead of getting a break, I get dragged into this mess, some stranger’s obsession, some countdown to becoming a weapon against the very people I’m trying to protect.’
[Host. This unit registers a concerning shift in tone.]
’I’m fine.’
[This unit does not believe that is accurate.]
"I said I’m fucking fine damnit," Julian snapped out loud, sharper than he meant to, and immediately felt something twist guiltily in his chest at the small, wounded silence that followed.
He dragged a hand down his face, forcing himself to breathe, to think past the exhaustion and the fury and the aching, hollow wish that somebody, anybody, would just find him already, drag him out of this nightmare before he had to make an impossible choice between fighting back and becoming exactly what he was fighting against.
’somebody has to be looking,’ he told himself, quiet and stubborn, clinging to it because it was the only thing left to cling to. ’Reid. Jayden. somebody. I just have to survive long enough for them to find me.’
The fox pressed closer against his side, small and warm, saying nothing for once, simply staying close the way it always did when words weren’t going to help.
"sorry," Julian muttered after a moment, voice rougher than he wanted it to be. "wasn’t snapping at you. just... I’m just tired of having no good options."
"this unit understands," the fox said quietly. "this unit wishes it had better ones to give you."
Julian let out a long breath, some of the tension easing slightly at the small, honest admission, and reached down to scratch absently behind the fox’s ear, an old, small comfort in the middle of everything else falling apart around him.
"we’ll find something," he said, more to convince himself than the fox. "we always do."
---
Elsewhere in that same quiet, wrong little world, Xavier stood in a dim antechamber, watching through senses only he possessed as his creation moved through the academy, wearing Julian’s face with flawless, practiced ease.
"good," he murmured, watching the impostor charm its way through another brief, careful conversation with a passing Sentinel, deflecting concern with just the right note of tired humor. "very good. keep learning them. keep them comfortable."
The creature had no voice of its own to answer him, simply a quiet, obedient stillness humming back through the connection between them, and Xavier smiled, slow and satisfied, settling back to watch his work unfold exactly as planned.
"soon," he said softly, to no one, "they’ll trust him completely. and by the time they realize what’s wrong, it’ll already be far too late to matter."
He turned from the vision, moving instead toward the room where the real Julian slept fitfully, and paused outside the door, listening for a long moment to the faint, uneven sound of breathing within.
"hold on a little longer," he murmured, something almost fond threading through the words despite their possessive edge. "I’m not finished making you ready yet."
---
The Emperor arrived at the infirmary the following morning, dismissing the attending healer with a curt wave, closing the door firmly behind him before crossing the room toward the bed.
"I want to speak with you alone," the Emperor said, voice quieter than his usual clipped authority, something almost gentle threading beneath it. "no guards. no witnesses. just us."
The fake Julian shifted upright slightly, expression calibrated into careful, cautious politeness. "of course, Your Majesty."
The Emperor studied him for a long moment, something searching behind his gaze, and then, slowly, deliberately, he moved closer, sitting on the edge of the bed itself, closer than protocol or propriety would ever normally allow.
"four days," the Emperor said quietly. "four days not knowing whether you were alive. I don’t think I’ve ever felt fear quite like that before." His hand lifted, hesitating only briefly, before brushing gently against the side of the fake Julian’s jaw, tilting his face slightly toward the light. "I need to know you’re really here. really safe."
The creature held perfectly still, calculating the safest response, letting its breath catch just slightly, just enough to seem overwhelmed rather than suspicious.
"I’m here," it said softly, voice pitched into something appropriately raw. "I promise, Your Majesty. I’m here."
The Emperor’s expression eased but not fully yet, something almost relieved flickering behind the composed mask he usually wore so carefully, and for a moment his thumb simply rested light against the fake Julian’s jaw, quiet and searching, like he needed the physical proof more than the verbal reassurance.
Then his gaze dropped, and his thumb, still resting against the fake Julian’s jaw, brushed lower, toward the collar of his sleeping robe, and stopped.
There, small and easy to miss unless you were looking exactly where the Emperor now was, sat a tiny patch of skin gone subtly, wrongly gray, the faintest whisper of rot curling at its edges, no larger than a fingertip, but undeniable once seen.
The Emperor went very still. His fingers didn’t move away. They stayed exactly where they were, pressed lightly against that small, damning patch of skin, and something in his expression shifted, sharpened, the warmth from a moment ago freezing over into something far colder and far more dangerous.
"Julian," he said slowly, voice dropping into something quiet and precise, every syllable deliberate now, "what is that."
