Chapter 28: The Mark

The dream folded around him slow and thick, like walking into water that hadn’t decided yet whether it wanted to hold him up or pull him under.

Julian stood in a space that wasn’t quite anywhere... walls that flickered between the academy’s stone corridors and the bathhouse and somewhere else entirely, somewhere older, colder, wrong in a way his body understood before his mind caught up. The air itself felt heavy here, pressing in against his skin like the dream hadn’t decided yet how much of it wanted to actually touch him.

’this isn’t real,’ he told himself immediately, old instinct snapping into place fast and hard. ’this is a dream. he’s doing this. stay calm. staying calm is the only thing that’s ever kept me alive.’

He’d learned that lesson a long time ago, on nights when the wall groaned under pressure it wasn’t built to survive, when panic would have gotten him and everyone behind him killed twice over. Fear was information. Panic was just noise. He forced his breathing steady, forced his mind to catalog details instead of spiraling, the way he’d trained himself to do a hundred times before in a world that no longer existed.

"you found your way in fast," the voice said, curling from every direction at once, amused and pleased with itself. "most people take longer to realize where they are. most people spend their whole visit confused, disoriented, easy."

"most people haven’t survived three years of monsters trying to get inside their head," Julian said, forcing his voice steady, scanning the shifting space for any sign of the man himself. The walls kept rearranging at the edges of his vision, stone becoming steam becoming something like open sky and back again, never settling long enough to trust. "you’re gonna have to try a lot harder than a creepy voice and some smoke and mirrors."

A low chuckle answered him, rich and unhurried, and the shifting walls solidified briefly into the bathhouse again, steam curling up thick around Julian’s bare feet, lantern light flickering gold across wet stone exactly the way it had the first time. And there, standing in the doorway exactly where he’d first appeared, was the man.

Up close, in the dream, Julian could see more of him than he had in either waking encounter. Sharp features arranged just a little too perfectly, calm and composed in a way that felt rehearsed rather than natural, eyes carrying that same patient, hungry stillness Julian remembered, watching him like he already knew exactly how this was going to end and was simply enjoying the process of getting there.

"you don’t get to decide that," Julian said, planting his feet, refusing to let the strange, disorienting pull of the dream space knock him off balance. Something about this place wanted him passive, wanted him drifting along with whatever shape it chose to take, and every instinct in him rebelled against that pull with everything he had. "not here. not anywhere."

"don’t I?" the man said, tilting his head slightly, unhurried, taking one slow step further into the room. "this is my territory, Julian. you’re a guest here. guests generally don’t get to make the rules of the house they’re standing in."

"then I guess I’m a bad guest," Julian said, "because I’m not interested in playing along with whatever this is supposed to be."

The man’s mouth curved, slow and satisfied. "defiance," he said, almost fond. "I do enjoy that. it makes the eventual surrender so much more satisfying."

"there’s not gonna be a surrender," Julian said, flat and hard.

"everyone says that," the man said, drifting a step closer, the space between them shrinking in a way that didn’t match his actual movement, like the dream itself was folding to bring him nearer without his feet ever properly crossing the distance. "right up until they don’t."

Julian’s pulse spiked, sharp and cold, but he held his ground, refusing to give the retreat this place clearly wanted from him. He reached, blind and desperate, for the same thing he always reached for... that door in his chest, that stubborn refusal to just accept whatever was being done to him, the same defiance that had cracked the evaluation crystal and broken a core-class Aberration apart on a battlefield two days ago.

He pushed against the dream itself, hard, the way he’d learned to push against despair on nights when giving up would have been so much easier than holding the line.

The dream trembled. Steam flickered and thinned at the edges, walls stuttering between shapes faster now, and for one brief, disorienting second Julian caught a glimpse of something underneath all of it... not stone, not water, just endless gray nothing, the true shape of whatever place this actually was before the man’s will smoothed back over it.

The man’s composed expression flickered, just slightly, surprise crossing it for the first time since Julian had arrived. "Hmm interesting," he murmured, studying Julian with new and careful attention now, some of the earlier lazy confidence draining out of his posture. "most people can’t fight the architecture itself. it isn’t built to be fought. you really aren’t like the others I’ve done this with."

"told ya," Julian said, teeth gritted, pushing harder against the wrongness pressing in on every side, sweat beading at his temples even in a body that technically wasn’t sweating at all. "I’m a bad guest. With terrible manners. you should’ve read the reviews before inviting me anywhere."

Something sharper cut through the man’s composure at that, an edge of real irritation showing through the practiced calm. "not yet," he said, voice tightening for the first time, less patient now, taking another step forward, close enough now that Julian could feel something like cold radiating off him, wrong in a way that had nothing to do with actual temperature. "I’m not finished. you don’t get to leave until I say you can leave."

"Ha, ha, ha very funny," Julian said, voice shaking now with effort but not backing down an inch, "because I don’t remember asking your permission for anything."

He shoved with everything he had left, every ounce of stubbornness that had held a gate shut for six hours straight, every scrap of will that had refused to let a world end without a fight even when the fight was clearly already lost.

The dream cracked. Light split through the gray nothing underneath, harsh and sudden, and the man’s face twisted for just a moment into something that wasn’t composed at all, something closer to genuine fury at being denied, before the whole space shattered around Julian in a rush of white and sound.

---

Outside, in the waking world, the fox had gone rigid where it perched on the pillow beside Julian’s head, ears snapping upright the second his breathing changed, every hair along its spine standing on end.

"host," it said sharply, nudging at Julian’s shoulder with a small paw, voice climbing fast toward panic as Julian’s face twisted tighter, brow furrowed hard, hands fisting into the sheets like he was bracing against something none of them could see. "host, wake up. your breathing’s wrong, your pulse is spiking, wake UP..."

Nothing. "host!" the fox said again, louder, claws digging in now, and when the nudge didn’t work, when Julian’s whole body went rigid and still in a way that made the fox’s small heart hammer with real terror, it did the only thing it knew for certain would break through. It sank sharp little teeth directly into Julian’s ear.

---

Julian’s eyes flew open, gasping, chest heaving hard, the dream shattering apart around him in one violent, disorienting snap that left his head spinning and his heart slamming against his ribs like it was trying to escape his chest entirely.

"...there you are," the fox said, breathless with relief, still crouched close against his face, tails trembling visibly. "host, you would not wake up, this unit tried everything, shaking you, calling your name, this unit was seconds from doing something far more drastic..."

"I’m awake," Julian rasped, sitting up too fast, the room tilting alarmingly before settling into something recognizable... his own bed, his own room, moonlight instead of steam, cool night air instead of that thick, wrong pressure. "I’m awake, I’m fine, I..."

He stopped. His hand had come up on instinct to rub at his own eyes, and in doing so brushed against the side of his neck, and something about the sensation, cold and sharp and utterly wrong against skin that should have felt nothing at all from a dream, made every muscle in his body go rigid and still.

"host," the fox said slowly, watching his face change, "what is it..."

Slowly, carefully, Julian reached for the small mirror sitting on his nightstand and angled it toward his neck with a hand that wasn’t quite steady.

There, just below his jaw, dark and unmistakable against his skin, was a mark. Not a bruise. Not a scratch. Something colder than either, edges too clean, too deliberate, like it had been placed there with exact and patient intention rather than left by accident, the shape of it almost deliberate, almost decorative, in a way that made Julian’s stomach turn to ice looking at it.

The fox went utterly silent, staring at it, tails frozen mid-air, every trace of its usual chatter completely gone.

"that," Julian said slowly, voice gone flat and hollow, staring at his own reflection like it belonged to somebody else entirely, "was not just a dream."

"no," the fox said quietly, voice smaller than Julian had ever heard it. "no, it was not."

Julian sat there for a long moment, fingers hovering just above the mark without quite touching it, mind racing through everything the System had theorized, everything the man had said, everything about the way this world’s corruption had learned to think and plan and want things the zombies back home never had. He thought about Reid’s warning, about the vault, about an Emperor who claimed secrets were being kept even from him.

He thought, most of all, about the look on the man’s face right before the dream shattered... not fear, not defeat, just cold, simmering fury at being denied something he’d clearly expected to simply take.

"This guy is not going to stop," Julian said quietly, more to himself than the fox. "whatever that mark is, whatever it means, he’s not going to stop just because I fought back tonight."

"no," the fox agreed, voice tight. "this unit doesn’t think he will."

Julian let the mirror fall from his hand onto the blanket, staring instead at the ceiling, exhaustion and cold fury tangled together in his chest in equal measure.

"then I guess," he said, jaw tightening, "we stop waiting around to find out who he is. because whatever this is..." his fingers finally touched the mark, cold under his own skin, "...it’s already started."
