Chapter 25: Vanish into tin air

Julian had been looking forward to this bath all day. It was the first stretch of true quiet since he’d woken up in this world... no breach alarms, no Chancellors, no Emperors grabbing his chin, no Mika screeching about custard in his hair. Just steam curling up off the water, the low flicker of lantern light against stone, and his own tired body finally allowed to just exist without something trying to kill it. He should have known better than to enjoy it.

[Dear, Host. Threat detected.]

The System’s voice cut through the quiet so sharply that Julian’s whole body went rigid in the water before his mind even caught up with the words.

’what. where.’ Julian said immediately.

[Unknown individual. Concealed presence. Currently observing from the shadows near the entrance. Signature does not match any recorded Sentinel classification.]

The fox, curled on a folded towel a few feet away, shot upright so fast its fur stood on end straight down its spine, all nine tails bristling stiff, ears pinned flat, golden eyes locked on the darkness near the door. "Um host~," it said, voice dropped low and sharp, every trace of yesterday’s playful chaos completely gone, "don’t move. something’s watching. I can feel it, but I can’t see it properly."

’you can’t see him either right.’

"no I can’t," the fox said, tension coiling tighter in its small frame. "But this unit senses a presence, but cannot fix a location on it. this is not normal. this unit does not like this at all."

Julian forced his breathing even, kept his shoulders loose, expression carefully unbothered even as every instinct screamed at him to move. He let his eyes drift, slow and deliberate, toward the shadows near the entrance.

There. Barely visible in the low lantern light, a shape figure stood motionless just beyond the reach of the glow — a man, still and silent, watching him with a patience that felt wrong in a way Julian couldn’t quite name. Not the coiled stillness of someone about to attack. Something colder than that. Something that looked, more than anything, like a man simply observing, unhurried, entirely unbothered about being seen.

He didn’t speak. Or either didn’t move. He just watched, eyes fixed on Julian with an intensity that made the water around Julian feel several degrees colder than it had a minute ago, some unreadable, patient hunger sitting behind his gaze that Julian recognized on some old, animal level even without a single word being said.

"who are you, and what do you want for me," Julian said, voice level, carrying just enough steel to make clear he wasn’t afraid, even as his hand slid slowly toward the edge of the bath, ready to move.

The man didn’t answer. The fox’s fur bristled further, tails lashing hard enough to send the towel skidding half off the ledge. "Um host," it said, voice tight, "this unit still cannot get a clear read on him. he doesn’t react to this unit at all. it’s like he doesn’t even register that this unit exists."

’great. so whatever he is, he’s not just hiding from you. he genuinely can’t see you.’

"this unit has never encountered that before," the fox said, something like real unease creeping into its voice now. "this unit does not like being unable to be seen by something this unit also cannot properly see."

The man’s gaze never wavered from Julian, never so much as flicked toward the fox even once, expression utterly unreadable, mouth set in something that wasn’t quite a smile and wasn’t quite anything else either. Just watching. Just patient, silent, unblinking attention, the kind that made Julian feel like prey being sized up rather than a person being looked at.

Julian eased himself further back through the water, closing the distance to the edge of the bath, muscles coiling tight beneath the surface. "Hey you, are you not gonna say something," Julian said, keeping his voice steady, "or is staring the whole plan of yours tonight."

The Man still said nothing. Not a flicker of something. Not a word.

[Host. Power surge detected. New function unlocking.]

Something shifted deep in Julian’s chest, sudden and unfamiliar, a strange pulling sensation like his own body had briefly forgotten which direction gravity pointed.

"A new function," the fox said quickly, sensing the shift immediately, ears swiveling toward him. "Um host, this unit believes you can..."

Julian didn’t even wait for the explanation. Some old instinct, faster than conscious thought, told him exactly what to reach for, the same blind desperate grasping that had kept him alive through a hundred impossible nights on the wall, and he reached for it now without hesitation.

The world blinked. Just one second he stood dripping at the edge of the bath, water sliding off his shoulders. The next, he was directly in front of the man, close enough to grab him, breath catching hard in his own throat at the sheer speed and wrongness of moving that fast without actually feeling himself move at all.

For one fraction of a second, something flickered behind the man’s still, silent expression... surprise, maybe, or something closer to interest, gone almost before Julian could be sure he’d seen it at all.

Julian lunged, hand closing hard around where the man’s shoulder should have been. His fingers closed on nothing but empty, cooling air.

The man was simply gone, dissolved into shadow like he’d never been standing there at all, no sound, no parting word, no trace left behind except the faint, unsettling memory of being watched far too closely for far too long.

"Huh he’s gone," the fox said, spinning in a tight circle, tails still bristling, scanning every corner of the bathhouse with frantic intensity. "host, he’s completely gone, this unit cannot sense him anywhere, not even a lingering trace..."

Julian didn’t wait to process it, didn’t let the strange new pulling sensation in his chest slow him down. He grabbed a robe off the hook near the door, yanking it on as he moved, and burst out into the corridor beyond, bare feet slapping wet against cold stone.

"which way," he snapped, more to himself than the fox, scanning the empty hallway in both directions. "which way did he go..."

"this unit doesn’t know," the fox said, frustration and fear both sharp in its voice, darting ahead of him down the corridor. "his signature vanished the second he disappeared. this unit has never encountered anything that could hide that completely, not from a full sensory sweep..."

Julian ran anyway, propelled by pure adrenaline and the phantom crawl of being watched still sitting under his skin, checking side corridors, empty training rooms, anywhere a person could conceivably hide. Every space came back the same. Empty. Silent. No trace at all that anyone had ever been there.

He rounded a final corner hard enough that his bare feet skidded on the stone, and nearly collided directly into Reid, who caught him by the shoulders on pure reflex, steadying them both.

"Julian," Reid said, alarm flashing across his face at the sight of him soaked, robe barely tied, breathing hard like he’d run a mile. "what happened, is something wrong..."

"Yeah while I was taking a bath, someone was in the bathhouse," Julian said, voice tight, still scanning the corridor behind Reid like the man might materialize out of thin air again at any second. "just standing there. watching me. didn’t say a single word, just... watched. and then vanished the second I tried to grab him."

Reid’s expression went dark and dangerous almost instantly, hands tightening on Julian’s shoulders. "did he touch you. hurt you."

"no," Julian said. "I moved before he got the chance. some new ability, I don’t even fully understand it yet, just... teleported, basically, right in front of him. tried to grab him. he was just gone."

"teleported," Reid repeated, something like alarm and awe both crossing his face at once.

"Yeah~ about that, but I will tell you the details later," Julian said. "right now I need to know if anyone’s seen a stranger wandering this wing tonight. someone who shouldn’t be here."

Reid’s jaw tightened, already turning to shout down the corridor for the nearest guard post, but even as he moved, even as alarms started echoing faintly through distant hallways, Julian already knew, with a cold, sinking certainty, exactly what the search was going to turn up.

Nothing. The fox landed lightly on his shoulder, breathing hard despite not technically needing to breathe, tails still bristling with unease. "this unit searched every accessible pathway within range," it said quietly. "nothing. no trace. no residual signature. and host... this unit could not see him at all. not properly. this unit has never failed to perceive something so completely before."

Julian stood in the middle of the corridor, soaked and cold, staring down the empty hallway where a stranger had watched him in total silence and vanished like he’d never existed at all.

"then we don’t sleep," Julian said quietly, "until we figure out exactly what that was got it."
