Julian forced his breathing to slow, forced the panic building in his chest back down into something he could actually use, the same way he’d learned to on a hundred bad nights when falling apart simply wasn’t an option.
’okay clam down,’ he thought, steadying himself against the wall. ’okay now. don’t spiral. ask questions. buy time. figure out what he actually wants while the fox finishes with that vent.’
"you never told me your name," Julian said, forcing his voice level, almost conversational, even as his pulse still hammered hard beneath the surface. "seems like a strange thing to skip, considering how invested you are in my future."
The man studied him for a long moment, something almost amused flickering behind his composed expression. "Xavier," he said simply.
Julian blinked, caught slightly off guard by the easy answer. "just like that."
"you asked," Xavier said. "I don’t see the point in hiding something so small when I intend for you to know everything about me eventually."
"funny," Julian said, "since you never bothered explaining literally anything else. what you want. what happens when your patience runs out. what ’understanding my position’ actually means."
Xavier’s mouth curved, slow and unbothered, rising from the chair with the same unhurried confidence he carried into every room. "you’ll learn all of that in time," he said. "for now, understand this instead." He moved toward the door, pausing just before it opened for him, glancing back with something cold and absolute settling behind his eyes. "you can search every inch of this place if it makes you feel better, Julian. you can test every wall, every window, every vent you think you’ve found. but you will not escape me. not here. not anywhere. I want you to exhaust yourself trying, if it helps you accept that faster."
Julian’s stomach dropped. He knew about the vent. Xavier didn’t say anything further, just held Julian’s gaze a moment longer, something patient and terrifyingly certain in it, before he turned and left, the door sealing shut behind him with that same soft, final click.
The fox slipped out from its hiding place the second the footsteps faded. "Did he know about the vent," it said, voice tight.
"maybe," Julian said, already moving toward the paneling anyway, jaw set. "or maybe he’s just bluffing, trying to make me give up before I even try. either way, I’m not sitting here waiting to find out what ’understanding my position’ means. we’re going. now."
---
The vent was tighter than Julian expected, cramped and cold, forcing him to crawl on elbows and knees through absolute darkness with only the fox’s faint golden glow lighting the way ahead. It felt like it went on forever, twisting through narrow stone passages that seemed to run beneath the entire compound.
[Host. Atmospheric readings shifting. Recommend caution.]
’excuse me, define the word shifting.’
[Increasing concentration of corrupted biological signatures ahead. Multiple sources. Clustered.]
Julian slowed, breath tight in the cramped space. "how many."
[Uncertain. Significant number. This unit strongly recommends turning back and seeking an alternate route.]
"we don’t have an alternate route," Julian muttered, pushing forward anyway, stubbornness winning out over caution the way it always did. "we keep moving."
The vent finally opened into a narrow gap overlooking what looked like a lower courtyard, and Julian eased himself down through it, dropping into a shadowed alcove, the fox landing silent beside him.
[Host. Warning. Recommend immediate retreat. Threat concentration ahead exceeds safe parameters.]
Julian ignored it, easing forward toward the edge of the alcove, driven by the same desperate need to find an actual exit that had gotten him this far already.
What he found instead stopped his heart cold. The courtyard below wasn’t empty. It was full... dozens of figures shuffling in the dim light, gray-skinned, hollow-eyed, moving with the same wrong, lurching gait Julian had spent three years fighting on a collapsing wall. Rogue-type Aberrations, packed together in unsettling numbers, contained somehow within this space like livestock waiting for something.
And among them, unmistakable even in the low light, were uniforms Julian recognized instantly.
Academy uniforms. Sentinel training gear, the same insignia Reid’s forces wore, draped over gray, corrupted bodies that shuffled and groaned among the rest of the horde, faces slack and hungry, any trace of the people they’d once been completely gone.
Julian’s blood turned to ice. ’those are ours,’ he thought, horror crawling up his spine. ’those are academy Sentinels. they’re... they turned them, they actually turned them... into...’
"host," the fox whispered, voice shaking, "this unit told you, this unit warned you, we need to leave right now..."
"what are you doing here." The voice came from directly behind him, cold and quiet, and Julian’s whole body went rigid.
---
Back at the academy, the search had produced nothing but exhausted Sentinels and mounting dread.
The Emperor stood at the center of what remained of the eastern breach site, expression carved from stone, watching squad after squad return from their sweeps with the same useless report. Nothing. No trail. No trace.
"Your Majesty," Reid said, voice tight with exhaustion, "we’ve searched every accessible route within three days’ travel. there’s nothing. whatever took him, it didn’t leave a path we can follow."
"then widen the search," the Emperor said, voice clipped and hard. "send every available Sentinel. I don’t care about resource strain. I don’t care about the border. find him."
"Your Majesty, if we pull forces from the border to widen this search, we risk..."
"I am aware of what we risk," the Emperor snapped, turning on Reid with something raw and furious behind his composed exterior finally breaking through completely. "I am also aware that the Empire’s first SSS-Rank Guide has been missing for three days, taken by something none of us can even properly identify, and that every hour we waste arguing about resources is an hour closer to losing him permanently. find him."
Jayden, standing nearby, said nothing, jaw tight, hands clenched at his sides, staring out at the empty horizon like it might finally, finally give something up if he just looked hard enough.
Nothing did. The scouts sent to the last known location Julian had vanished from returned by evening with the same report as everyone before them: no trail, no residue, no sign that anyone had ever stood there at all, as if the very ground had swallowed every trace of what happened.
---
Julian turned slowly, heart pounding, to find Xavier standing just behind him in the shadowed alcove, arms crossed, expression cold in a way Julian hadn’t seen from him yet... none of the warmth, none of the patient amusement, just flat, quiet fury.
"I told you," Xavier said, voice low, "that you wouldn’t escape me. and instead of listening, you crawled through my walls to find this."
Julian’s eyes flicked past him toward the courtyard, toward the shuffling gray shapes still wearing academy colors, throat tight with horror he couldn’t fully swallow down. "those are my people," Julian said, voice shaking despite himself. "Sentinels. from the academy. you turned them..."
"I collect them," Xavier corrected, voice flat. "the ones worth keeping become like me. the rest," his gaze flicked toward the shambling rogues without an ounce of remorse, "become useful in other ways."
Julian’s stomach turned violently at the casual cruelty in that answer, fury and horror tangling together too tightly to separate. "you’re a monster."
"I’m honest," Xavier said, stepping closer, something dangerous simmering beneath his composed exterior now. "which is more than most people manage. and you," his eyes narrowed, "were told to stay in your room."
"Ha! very funny," Julian said, forcing his voice steady despite every instinct screaming at him to run, "I don’t take orders well. you should know that by now."
Xavier studied him for a long, silent moment, and behind him, in the shadowed courtyard, dozens of hollow, hungry eyes slowly began turning toward the sound of voices, gray shapes shifting, shuffling, drawn by something even Julian couldn’t yet name.
"you shouldn’t have come here," Xavier said quietly. "not because I’ll punish you for it."
His eyes flicked, deliberate and cold, toward the horde now stirring awake behind him. "but because now, they know you’re here too."
