The mountain air went quiet the moment Julian’s body went slack in the man’s arms, the poison still curling thick and invisible around them both, and the fox... still clinging to Julian’s shoulder, fur bristling, breath coming in short, straining pants... felt the world lurch sideways one final time.
"host," it managed weakly, claws digging in against fabric that was already starting to blur beneath its paws, "host, wake up, you cannot..."
The man’s shadow swallowed them whole. And then, just like that, the fox was gone too, yanked backward into whatever space the System retreated to when its physical form couldn’t sustain itself any longer, leaving Julian entirely, completely alone with the one person who wanted him most.
---
Back on the battlefield, the retreat happened almost too smoothly.
One moment the rogues and high-class Aberrations were locked in brutal combat with the academy’s Sentinels, and the next, all at once, without warning or explanation, every single one of them simply stopped.
"they’re pulling back," someone shouted, disbelieving. "But why are they pulling back..."
Reid lowered his blade slowly, chest heaving, watching the last of the corrupted forces retreat through the breach with unsettling, coordinated precision, like a puppet show where someone had simply decided the performance was over.
"where’s Julian," Jayden said suddenly, voice sharp with alarm, scanning the thinning battlefield with growing panic. "I saw him fighting near the breach a minute ago, where..."
Reid’s blood went cold. He turned in a full circle, eyes sweeping every corner of the field, every cluster of exhausted Sentinels, every fallen body being tended to by Guides. No sign of him. No sign of the fox either, which never left his side.
"JULIAN!" Reid bellowed, voice cracking across the field loud enough to draw attention from every direction. No answer came.
"he was right there," Jayden said, already moving fast toward the spot where he’d last seen him, boots skidding in the dirt, panic sharpening every word. "he was fighting that man, I saw them, I thought he had it handled..."
"I saw a mark on Julian," Reid said suddenly, cold horror dawning fast and ugly. "that mark on his neck. Jayden, if that thing lets him track Julian, or move him..."
Jayden’s face went pale. "you think he took him right."
"I think," Reid said grimly, already turning to shout orders toward the nearest squad, "we don’t have time to think anything else."
---
Julian came back to consciousness slow and disoriented, sensation creeping in at the edges before his mind caught up... the ache in his limbs, a strange, sluggish weight still sitting in his chest, and beneath it all, faint and distant, voices. Normal voices. Calm ones. Footsteps on stone. Laughter drifting somewhere nearby.
For one brief, groggy second, some small, foolish part of him thought maybe he was back in his own room, that the mountain and the poison and the man’s voice had all just been some awful dream.
Then his eyes opened properly, and every scrap of that hope died at once.
The ceiling above him was wrong. The light through the windows was wrong, pale and thin in a way that didn’t match any hour he recognized. The room itself looked disturbingly similar to the academy he’d woken up in barely a week ago... same general architecture, same style of stone... and that similarity somehow made it worse, made his skin crawl harder than if it had looked completely alien.
"where," Julian said out loud, voice cracking, already shoving himself upright despite the dizziness slamming into him the second he moved, "am I..."
He didn’t stay calm. Every instinct in his body screamed at once, three years of hard-won survival training colliding directly with raw, unfiltered panic at waking up somewhere unknown, alone, with no memory of how he’d gotten there beyond the mountain and the poison and strong arms catching him before he hit the ground.
"where AM I," he said again, louder, scrambling off the bed too fast, legs nearly buckling under him as he stumbled toward the window, heart hammering hard against his ribs. Outside, a courtyard stretched out below, full of people moving and talking and laughing exactly like ordinary students... except their skin, where sleeves rode up, showed the faint unmistakable gray tinge of corruption, and their eyes, when one glanced up toward the window, carried the same wrong, patient hunger he’d seen in the man from the bathhouse. Julian’s stomach dropped straight through the floor.
"no," he said, backing away from the glass, breath coming fast and ragged now, mind spinning through every worst possibility at once. "no, no, this isn’t... where is my..."
"you’re awake." The voice came from the doorway, calm, warm, and entirely too pleased, and Julian spun toward it fast, fists already rising on instinct even as his balance swayed dangerously.
The man stood there, watching him with that same patient, possessive stillness, gaze sweeping over Julian slow and thorough, like he was cataloguing every visible sign of distress and finding each one deeply satisfying.
"where am I," Julian demanded again, voice raw now, refusing to let the fear pulling at his chest slow him down. "what is this place, why are there... those people out there, they’re..."
"corrupted," the man said simply, stepping fully into the room, and something in his tone shifted the moment he moved closer, cooler now, sharper at the edges than it had been on the mountain. "like me. every one of them. this is my territory, Julian. and you," his eyes narrowed slightly, possessive and cold all at once, "are somewhere no one is coming to take you from."
"the hell I am," Julian snapped, backing up another step despite the room offering him nowhere left to go. "you don’t get to just decide that. take me back. NOW."
The man’s expression didn’t change, didn’t soften, watching Julian’s panic with the same detached interest he might give a storm rattling against a window he knew perfectly well wouldn’t break. "you’re not going anywhere," he said, voice flat and final, "until you understand exactly what you are to me now."
Julian’s back hit the wall before he even realized he’d been retreating, chest heaving, mind racing for any exit, any weapon, any way out of a room that suddenly felt a lot smaller than it had a moment ago.
"I don’t belong to you," Julian said, voice shaking with fury even as real fear coiled tight beneath it.
Something flickered behind the man’s eyes at that, dark and possessive, and he closed the last of the distance between them slow and deliberate, close enough now that Julian could feel the same unnatural cold radiating off him from the bathhouse, the courtyard, the dream.
"not yet," the man said quietly. "but you will so get ready."
