Julian didn’t think. He reacted. The second that breath ghosted against his neck, the pulling sensation surged up through his chest, instinct grabbing for it before conscious thought could catch up, and the world blinked around him, cold air rushing past for one disorienting heartbeat before his feet hit solid ground several yards away.
Nobody noticed. The battlefield raged on exactly as it had a second before, Sentinels cutting down rogues zombies, Reid shouting formation orders somewhere off to Julian’s left, Jayden’s gold light flashing bright against a cluster of high-class Aberrations... none of them so much as glanced toward the spot where Julian had vanished and reappeared, too consumed by their own fights to catch the flicker of movement at all.
’good,’ Julian thought, chest heaving. ’nobody saw that. one less thing to explain later.’
He didn’t have time to feel relieved about it. The man was already there again, closing the distance like the teleport had barely inconvenienced him at all, mouth curved into something delighted, unbothered by the sudden absence and reappearance like it was the most natural thing in the world.
"there it is again," he said warmly. "you really do like running."
"I don’t run idiot," Julian said, and this time, instead of reaching for his guiding power, instead of that familiar warm door in his chest, he let his hands curl into fists.
He’d spent three years fighting with nothing but his own body before the Guide power ever showed up... bare hands, sharpened rebar, whatever he could scavenge off a corpse when the ammunition ran dry. This body had inherited some of that muscle memory now too, whatever training the original Julian had absorbed just from growing up surrounded by Sentinels and combat drills, and Julian intended to use every scrap of it. Guiding energy was a resource. His fists cost him nothing but effort, and effort was something he still had plenty of.
He swung first. His fist connected with the man’s jaw, solid and satisfying, snapping his head sideways with enough force that for one glorious second Julian actually believed he’d landed something that mattered.
The man straightened slowly, working his jaw with two fingers, and looked almost impressed. "Hmm that," he said, "was unexpected."
"there’s more where that came from," Julian said, already moving again, driving forward with a series of sharp, controlled strikes, the kind of brutal, economical violence born from years of fighting things that didn’t go down easy the first time. The man dodged some of it, took the rest without much visible concern, and Julian could feel the exchange building into something almost even, almost manageable, the first fight since he’d arrived in this world that felt like it was playing to his actual strengths instead of some new, untested power he barely understood.
"you fight like someone who’s done this a thousand times," the man said, ducking under a strike aimed at his ribs, voice carrying no real strain despite the pace Julian was setting. "no wasted movement. no hesitation. I like that."
"glad you’re enjoying yourself," Julian said, driving another punch toward his sternum.
The man caught his wrist this time, and Julian twisted immediately, using the grip against him, but before the movement could fully complete, the world shifted.
It happened fast, disorienting, the ground beneath Julian’s feet suddenly wrong, colder, harder, and when he blinked the battlefield had vanished entirely, replaced by jagged gray rock stretching in every direction, thin, biting wind whipping across an exposed mountain slope, sky sitting far too close overhead, pale and washed out like even the sun didn’t reach properly up here.
’huh a mountain,’ Julian thought, stomach lurching hard with the abrupt change, balance faltering for half a second before he caught himself. ’he pulled us somewhere else. how did he...’
[Host. Location has changed dramatically without warning. This unit did not detect the transition occurring in advance. Recommend immediate reassessment of surroundings.]
’you’ve got to be kidding me.’
The man stood a short distance away, entirely unbothered by the sudden shift in scenery, watching Julian with that same patient amusement, arms loosely crossed like he’d simply stepped from one room into another. "impressive, isn’t it," he said. "moving whole spaces, rather than just myself. it took me quite a while to master that particular trick. you’re the first person clever enough to actually make me use it properly."
Julian’s fists were still raised, breath coming hard in the thin mountain air, but something about the atmosphere itself felt wrong, heavier than altitude alone should account for, a faint, sickly-sweet smell curling at the edges of every breath he pulled in, cloying and unnatural against the otherwise clean mountain cold.
[Host. Warning. Atmospheric analysis indicates significant toxin concentration in the surrounding air. Classification: unknown, but consistent with corrupted origin. Immediate evacuation strongly recommended.]
’poison,’ Julian thought, already feeling it now that the System had flagged it, a strange, creeping heaviness settling into his limbs that had nothing to do with exhaustion or altitude. His lungs felt thicker somehow, each breath drawing in slightly less than it should. ’this whole place is filled with poison gas.’
"you feel it, don’t you," the man said, watching him with open satisfaction, not moving from where he stood, clearly immune to whatever hung thick and invisible in the mountain air around them. "this place has been soaking in corrupted residue for years. an old breach site, long since sealed, long since forgotten by anyone who matters. nothing living stays here long without paying a price for the visit."
"you brought me to a poison pocket," Julian said, voice already going rougher, his own breathing starting to feel labored in a way that had nothing to do with the fight moments earlier.
"I brought you somewhere you can’t simply run from," the man said, taking one slow, unhurried step closer, apparently confident enough in the toxin’s grip on Julian to stop worrying about another sudden vanishing act. "somewhere your clever little trick won’t matter much, because there’s nowhere safe within range to run to. you’d have to know exactly where you were going to escape it properly. you don’t."
[Host. Toxin absorption accelerating. Guiding reserves are being actively consumed attempting to counteract exposure without conscious direction from host. Recommend host cease physical exertion immediately and remain still.]
’can’t. have to get out of here...’
Julian forced himself forward a step anyway, stubborn instinct refusing to just stand still and let this happen, and immediately regretted it, his knees buckling slightly, vision swimming at the edges like the whole mountain had tilted a few degrees without his permission.
"no," Julian gritted out, forcing himself upright through sheer, furious willpower, even as his own limbs felt increasingly like they belonged to somebody else entirely. "not... not like this..."
He tried to reach for that same pulling sensation from before, tried to grab hold of the teleport instinct and yank himself away from this place entirely, back toward the battlefield, back toward Reid and Jayden and anywhere that wasn’t slowly poisoning him from the inside out.
It slipped through his grasp like smoke.
[Host. Reserves critical. Toxin levels exceeding safe threshold for sustained cognitive function. This unit strongly urges host to...]
The System’s warning cut off mid-sentence, static crackling faintly through Julian’s skull as his vision tunneled hard, the gray mountain rock swimming sideways in his sight, the man’s calm, satisfied expression the last clearly focused thing Julian could manage before his legs finally gave out entirely beneath him.
The ground never came. Arms caught him instead, firm and careful, lowering him down slow and deliberate instead of letting him crash against the unforgiving rock, and the last thing Julian registered before the darkness swallowed him whole was warm breath against his ear, low and pleased, dripping with quiet, satisfied triumph.
"gotcha," the man said softly.
