Julian moved fast across the training yard, the fox clinging tight to his shoulder, but there was no panic in his stride, no wasted motion, just the same cold, focused calm that used to settle over him on the wall whenever things went bad enough that panic stopped being useful.
’um okay~’ he thought, steady despite the chaos rushing past him in every direction. ’people are down. figure out why, figure out how to fix it, move.’
[Confirmed. Host’s calm response is notably efficient compared to standard panic responses observed in others.]
’panicking doesn’t heal anybody. focus does.’
An attendant rushing past pointed him toward the east barracks without needing to be asked twice, voice thin with fear. "Team C, they just started collapsing during drills, nobody touched them, nobody attacked them, they just..."
"airborne," Julian said, more to himself than anyone, already piecing it together as he walked. "if nobody touched them and it spread through an entire squad at once, it’s in the air."
The fox stiffened against his shoulder. "that would explain how it spread so evenly. airborne corruption is rare. and dangerous."
"then let’s hope it’s not still floating around when I get in there."
He reached the barracks and stepped inside, and the scene was bad, worse than he expected, a dozen Sentinels down across the floor, gray patches spreading over exposed skin, veins standing out dark beneath the surface, other Guides working over them with growing desperation and shrinking results.
Julian didn’t hesitate, didn’t let the scale of it slow him down, just knelt beside the nearest fallen Sentinel and pressed his palms flat against gray-spreading skin, calm settling over him like armor.
The corruption fought back hard, same as it had on the battlefield, ancient and hungry and resistant, but Julian pushed through it steady and unhurried, treating it exactly like every other impossible fight he’d survived before this one... not with panic, just with the simple, stubborn refusal to stop until it broke.
One by one, he worked through them, the gray receding under his hands each time, breath returning to each Sentinel in turn, color flooding back into gray faces. Other Guides fell into step around him, following his lead, managing smaller successes of their own now that Julian had proven it possible.
By the time he reached the last one, his hands were shaking, his vision blurring faintly at the edges, but he didn’t stop, didn’t slow, just kept pouring out what he had left until the final patch of gray broke apart and dissolved.
"that’s the last of them," Julian said, voice hoarse, sitting back on his heels.
Reid was there instantly, hand steadying his shoulder. "you’re at your limit again, Julia."
"As you can still see I’m upright," Julian said. "And that counts as fine today."
Reid didn’t look convinced, but the barracks were clearing now, medical staff moving the recovered Sentinels off to proper beds, and Julian let himself be pulled up onto unsteady feet, waving off Reid’s offer to help him back to his room with more stubbornness than his body actually had left to spare.
"I’ve got it," Julian said. "go make sure nobody else drops. I’ll be fine."
Reid studied him a long moment, clearly not fully believing that, but duty pulled him away toward the recovering Sentinels regardless, and Julian started the slow walk back alone, the fox gone quiet and watchful on his shoulder.
He almost made it. The hallway blurred sideways about twenty feet from his door, his legs giving out from under him without warning, reserves finally hitting bottom after healing an entire squad on top of yesterday’s battle, and the last coherent thought Julian had time for was a flat, unimpressed *oh, not again* before the floor rushed up to meet him.
Except it didn’t. Arms caught him hard, wrapping around his chest before he hit the ground, and Julian’s vision swam, blinking hazily up at the face hovering over him.
Logan.
"I’ve got you," Logan said, voice tight with something Julian was too exhausted to properly read, lowering them both carefully to the floor instead of trying to hold him upright.
Julian groaned, trying to push himself back to sitting, and Logan didn’t let go, arms still braced firm around him.
"let go of me~," Julian mumbled, though the words came out with less heat than intended, exhaustion stealing most of his usual bite.
"No not yet," Logan said, and something in his voice cracked, raw and unsteady in a way Julian had genuinely never heard from him before, not once, not in the hall, not on the battlefield, not anywhere. "Julian, please, just... let me say this while you can’t run off in the middle of it."
Julian sagged, too drained to actually fight him on it, letting his head rest back against Logan’s arm despite every instinct telling him not to.
"I was foolish," Logan said, voice low and fast now, like he’d been holding the words back for two days and they were finally spilling out all at once. "I was stupid, and cruel, and I said things in front of the entire academy that I’ve regretted every single hour since. I didn’t know what you’d become, and honestly, that doesn’t even matter, because I shouldn’t have said any of it regardless of what rank you turned out to be. you didn’t deserve that. nobody deserves that."
Julian stared up at him, too tired to summon the sharp retort building somewhere in the back of his mind.
"I want you back," Logan said, quieter now, something desperate underneath it. "I know I don’t deserve to ask that. I know it. but I’m asking anyway, because watching you almost die on that battlefield, watching an Emperor and my own cousin both try to claim you, watching you collapse in this hallway just now... I can’t just stand by and pretend I don’t still..."
Julian, gathering just enough strength to finally push back against Logan’s chest, opened his mouth to deliver exactly the kind of insult this situation clearly called for.
"Logan, that has got to be the most..."
"baby!" Mika’s voice cut across the hallway like a hammer through glass, and both of them turned to see him striding up fast, expression twisted somewhere between fury and desperation, eyes locked entirely on Logan like Julian wasn’t even in the room. Logan’s whole body went rigid.
"did you seriously just call him ’baby’ right in front of me," Julian said flatly, exhaustion momentarily forgotten in the face of pure, disbelieving offense, "while you’re literally holding me on the floor of a hallway."
Mika’s face went red. "I wasn’t talking to *him*," he snapped, and then, horrifyingly, turned that same syrupy tone back toward Logan without missing a beat, "Logan, baby, we need to talk, you can’t seriously be down here fawning over some..."
"don’t," Logan said, voice suddenly ice cold, cutting Mika off completely, "call him that."
Mika blinked, clearly not expecting that particular reaction. "Logan..."
"I am done," Logan said, standing slowly, careful to keep Julian steady as he rose, "listening to you talk about him like he’s beneath either of us. I was done the second I saw what he actually is. get out of my sight, Mika. I mean it."
Mika’s mouth opened and closed twice, sputtering, before he spun on his heel and stormed off in a fury of muttered curses, leaving the hallway in a stunned, ringing silence.
Julian, still propped against Logan’s arm, stared up at him with an expression caught somewhere between exhaustion and genuine bewilderment. "did you just defend me."
"I did," Logan said, something almost sheepish creeping into his voice now that the anger had drained back out of it.
"huh~," Julian said. "wasn’t expecting that."
"I meant everything I said," Logan added quickly, kneeling back down slightly to keep Julian steady. "about wanting you back. about being foolish. I know I’ve got no right to ask, especially not after Mika just..."
"Logan," Julian said, cutting him off, voice flat with exhaustion but steady enough to carry weight, "I’m currently running on fumes, I just healed an entire squad from an airborne corruption that shouldn’t exist, an Emperor tried to marry me twice in one day, and now you’re proposing a redo of our entire relationship while I’m on the floor. this is not the moment."
"I know," Logan said quickly. "I know, I just... I didn’t know when I’d get another chance to say it."
Julian studied him for a long, tired moment, something complicated sitting behind his exhaustion, some old ember of the engagement memories the original Julian carried, tangled up with everything Logan had done and said since. He didn’t have the energy to sort through all of that right now.
"ask me again," Julian said finally, "when I’m not about to pass out in a hallway. and when there isn’t a guy calling you ’baby’ three feet away like we’re in some kind of soap opera."
Something in Logan’s face eased slightly, hope flickering behind the guilt. "I’ll take that as not a no."
"take it as ask me later," Julian corrected, letting his head drop back against Logan’s shoulder despite himself, the exhaustion finally winning out over any further argument. "right now I need my bed, and quiet, and absolutely nobody else confessing anything to me for at least the next twelve hours."
Logan, carefully, gathered him up properly and started walking him the rest of the way to his room, and for once, didn’t say another word the whole way there, letting the quiet actually be quiet.
The fox, silent through the entire exchange, finally spoke up once Logan had settled Julian onto his bed and reluctantly left the room, voice thoughtful in the stillness that followed. "that was unexpected," it said.
"you’re telling me," Julian mumbled into his pillow.
"not that," the fox said. "the corruption. this unit’s been thinking about where it actually came from."
Julian cracked one eye open. "and?"
"a message arrived while you were busy healing half a squad and being fought over in a hallway," the fox said. "the palace traced the source. a sealed vault beneath the academy. one that’s supposed to hold dangerous material from a past incident the Empire never made public."
Julian pushed himself up slightly onto one elbow despite his exhaustion. "So did someone opened it."
"Yes someone did," the fox confirmed. "and whoever it was had a reason to want an entire squad down, and you standing there as the only one who could fix it."
Julian let his head fall back against the pillow, staring up at the ceiling, exhaustion and unease tangling together in his chest.
"great~," he muttered. "just what I needed. someone in this Empire wants me indispensable so badly enough to poison their own Sentinels over it."
"this unit would recommend finding out who," the fox said quietly, "before they decide indispensable isn’t enough, and try something worse."
