Reborn as an SSS-Rank Guide in the Sentinel Academy [BL]

Chapter 36: Completely Mine

Xavier stood alone in his private chamber, watching the flame of a single candle bend and twist in the draft, and let the laughter finally spill out of him, low and dark and entirely too pleased with itself.

"that’s it, Julian," he murmured, voice curling with quiet, possessive delight. "fight all you want. survive every single thing I throw at you. it doesn’t matter. you can never escape me. and eventually," his mouth curved slow, "I will make you completely mine."

He turned from the candle, moving toward the far wall where a section of stone shifted at his touch, revealing a narrow chamber beyond, dim and cold, home to something that waited in perfect, patient stillness until he called for it.

"come," Xavier said. A shape unfolded from the shadows, tall and gray-skinned beneath a layer of expertly applied glamour, features shifting and settling the moment Xavier’s will pressed against it, until what stood before him wore Julian’s face perfectly. Same jaw, same tired eyes, same faint scar Julian himself probably didn’t even know he’d inherited from his old life.

"you know what to do," Xavier said, circling the creature slowly, studying the disguise with a critic’s careful eye. "make your way to the academy. tell them you found your way out. tell them you don’t remember anything since the mountain. let them fuss over you, let them believe they’ve gotten their precious Guide back safely." His smile sharpened. "and when the moment is right, when they’re least expecting it, you’ll do exactly what I’ve prepared you to do."

The creature wearing Julian’s face said nothing, simply inclined its head in silent understanding, eyes flat and hollow beneath the borrowed warmth Xavier’s glamour had painted over them.

"good," Xavier said softly, straightening the collar of the disguise with unsettling tenderness. "go."

---

Julian slept fitfully in the room Xavier had given him, tangled in blankets that felt too soft for a place that terrified him this much, the fox curled tight against his side, both of them worn down from the day’s violence into something less than proper rest.

He dreamed of the wall. Of the gate holding, of Mia’s voice screaming his name, of blood in his mouth and the strange, distant certainty that dying hadn’t been the worst thing that could happen to him after all.

He woke twice in the dark, heart pounding, certain he’d heard Xavier’s voice curling somewhere nearby, only to find the room empty and silent both times, nothing but shadows and the fox’s steady, quiet breathing beside him.

He didn’t know, couldn’t know, that somewhere beyond those walls, something wearing his exact face had already slipped free of Xavier’s territory and begun the long walk back toward everything Julian actually wanted to return to.

---

The search had become its own kind of exhausting ritual by the fourth day, squads rotating out at dawn and dusk, sweeping the same stretches of territory over and over with steadily diminishing hope.

Reid stood at the edge of the northern treeline as the sun dipped low, watching another squad return with the same report as every squad before it. Nothing. No trail. No sign.

"this isn’t working," Reid muttered, more to himself than anyone, rubbing at eyes that hadn’t had proper rest in days.

"Commander," one of the scouts said, jogging up with a tired salute, "eastern squad’s checking in. still nothing along the ridge line."

"tell them to fall back for the night," Reid said. "we’ll resume at first light."

The scout nodded and turned to relay the order, and Reid let out a long, heavy breath, staring out at the darkening horizon, exhaustion and worry tangling together into something that sat like a stone in his chest. He thought about the mark on Julian’s neck, about the way it had burned when Xavier got close, about every awful possibility that thought had opened up over the last four sleepless nights.

Jayden approached from the direction of the academy, expression drawn and tight, having clearly slept just as little as Reid had. "anything," he asked, though his voice already carried the answer he expected.

"nothing," Reid said. "same as this morning. same as yesterday."

Jayden’s jaw tightened, and he turned to stare out at the same empty horizon, hands curling into fists at his sides. "he’s out there somewhere," he said, quiet and fierce. "I know he is. I just..." His voice cracked slightly, exhaustion finally wearing through the composure he’d been holding onto for days. "I don’t know how much longer we search before we start considering that we might not find him at all."

"we don’t consider that," Reid said sharply, the words coming out harder than he intended. "not yet. not until we’ve exhausted every single option."

Jayden didn’t argue, just nodded once, tired and grim, and the two of them stood together in silence as the search parties trickled back toward the academy for the night, the same hollow, unanswered question hanging heavy between every one of them. where is he.

---

It was full dark by the time the last squad filed back through the academy gates, torches lit along the perimeter walls, exhausted Sentinels dragging themselves toward whatever rest they could manage before the search resumed at dawn.

Reid remained near the gate a while longer, unwilling to fully retreat inside, some stubborn instinct refusing to let him stop watching the tree line even after everyone else had given up for the night. That instinct was the only reason he heard it at all.

A faint rustle, off to the left, past the edge of the torchlight. Reid’s hand went instantly to his weapon, body tensing, eyes narrowing into the dark.

"who’s there," he called out, voice sharp with immediate alertness.

For a moment, nothing. Just wind through the treeline, the distant murmur of the academy settling in for the night behind him.

Then a voice, faint and ragged, cracked through the darkness. "Reid..."

Reid’s whole body went rigid. He knew that voice. "Julian?" he said, already moving forward fast, torch snatched from the nearest wall bracket, heart slamming hard against his ribs. "Julian, is that..."

A figure staggered out of the tree line into the flickering torchlight, clothes torn, one arm cradled tight against his chest like it pained him to move it at all, hair disheveled, face pale and drawn with exhaustion.

Julian. Reid’s breath caught hard in his throat, relief and disbelief crashing through him all at once as he closed the last of the distance in a dead sprint, torch nearly forgotten in his hand.

"Julian," Reid said again, voice breaking slightly, reaching him just as his knees seemed to buckle, catching him before he could collapse fully to the ground. "you’re here, you’re actually here, we’ve been searching for four days, I thought..."

Julian’s head lifted slowly, eyes glassy and unfocused, breath coming in shallow, uneven gasps, and his voice, when it finally came, was thin and cracked and utterly exhausted in a way that cut straight through every ounce of relief flooding Reid’s chest.

"Reid," Julian rasped, fingers curling weakly into the front of Reid’s uniform, arm still cradled tight against his side like something inside it had broken badly. "help... help me..."
