The academy erupted the moment word spread.
By the time Reid carried Julian through the front gates, half-supporting his weight, shouting for a medic, the courtyard had already begun filling with people... exhausted Sentinels who’d spent four days searching without rest, staff who’d barely slept worrying, all of them crowding close despite Reid’s sharp orders to give him space.
"he’s alive," someone said, disbelieving, the words rippling backward through the gathering crowd like a physical wave. "the Guide’s alive, they found him..."
"we didn’t find him," Reid snapped, easing Julian down onto the stretcher a medic had rushed forward with. "he found his way back on his own. someone get the Emperor. now."
The fake Julian lay still on the stretcher, breath coming in careful, measured gasps, arm cradled tight against his chest exactly the way a genuinely injured person’s would be, eyes fluttering half-open just enough to seem disoriented and exhausted without giving anything away.
’observe,’ Xavier’s will pulsed quiet and constant beneath the creature’s borrowed skin, an instruction laid deep enough that it functioned almost like instinct now. ’learn who matters to him. learn what breaks their composure.’
The creature filed away every reaction with cold, patient precision even while its face contorted into something that looked, convincingly, like pain.
---
Jayden arrived within minutes, breathless, shoving through the gathered crowd with a desperation that cracked visibly through his usual composure. "Julian," he said, dropping to his knees beside the stretcher, hands hovering like he wasn’t sure it was safe to touch him. "Julian, can you hear me, are you..."
"Jayden," the fake Julian rasped, voice pitched perfectly into something thin and exhausted, testing the water. "I don’t... everything’s blurry. I don’t remember much. just the mountain, and then... nothing. waking up in the trees."
"you don’t remember anything," Jayden repeated, something cracked and raw in his voice, relief and fear tangled together. "that’s fine. that’s fine, you’re safe now, that’s all that matters."
’i got it now,’ the creature thought distantly, filing that reaction away too. ’this one is easy to reassure. useful.’
Logan arrived next, having sprinted the whole way from the training yard, breath ragged, expression somewhere between disbelief and desperate hope. He didn’t say anything at first, just stared, like he needed a long moment to actually believe what he was looking at, before he finally knelt on the other side of the stretcher.
"you’re really here," Logan said quietly. "I thought..." He stopped himself, jaw tight, clearly swallowing back whatever worst-case thought had been eating at him for four days.
The fake Julian offered him a weak, exhausted smile, calibrated exactly to match what the real Julian’s dry humor might have produced under similar circumstances. "guess I’m hard to get rid of."
Logan let out something between a laugh and a broken exhale, relief flooding visibly across his face.
Reid, standing close by, watched the whole exchange with careful, exhausted eyes, some old professional instinct keeping a small, watchful distance even through his own obvious relief. "we need to get him to the healers," he said finally, voice firm, cutting through the gathering crowd’s noise. "everyone back. give him room."
---
The Emperor arrived just as the medics finished their initial assessment, sweeping into the infirmary with the same controlled fury he’d carried through every hour of the search, though something in his expression cracked the moment his eyes landed on the figure lying in the bed.
"leave us," he said quietly, and the room emptied fast, medics and Sentinels alike filing out without argument, until only the Emperor remained, standing at the foot of the bed, studying the fake Julian with an intensity that made even the creature’s careful composure falter for half a second.
"four days," the Emperor said finally, voice low. "four days, and you simply walked out of the wilderness with no memory of how."
"I’m sorry," the fake Julian said, voice appropriately rough and apologetic. "I wish I remembered more. I know that’s not helpful."
The Emperor studied him a long moment longer, something calculating behind his gaze that made the creature’s borrowed instincts flare with quiet, careful alertness. "you don’t seem particularly distressed," the Emperor said slowly, "for someone who just spent four days missing under unknown circumstances."
The creature’s mind... Xavier’s will, pressing constant beneath its stolen skin... scrambled fast to correct the miscalculation, and it let its expression crumple immediately into something raw and shaken, hands trembling slightly against the blanket. "I am," it said, voice cracking convincingly. "I just... I don’t want to fall apart in front of everyone. I’ve had enough people staring at me since I got back."
Something in the Emperor’s expression eased slightly at that, though the sharp, assessing quality behind his eyes didn’t fully fade. "of course," he said. "rest. we’ll speak properly once you’ve recovered."
He turned to leave, and the creature let out a slow, careful breath once the door clicked shut, filing away the near-miss with cold, clinical precision. too composed. adjust. show more distress next time. the Emperor is more perceptive than the others.
---
It was Reid who nearly caught it, hours later, in the quiet stretch of evening once the infirmary had finally settled and most visitors had been sent away to let the "patient" rest.
He sat in the chair beside the bed, arms crossed, watching the fake Julian with the same careful attention he’d been giving all day, some old instinct refusing to fully relax even now.
"you fought something out there," Reid said finally, breaking the silence. "your knuckles were split when you arrived. old wounds, mostly healed, but split. that’s not the kind of injury you get wandering lost in a forest for four days."
The creature’s mind processed the discrepancy fast, calculating the safest answer. "I really don’t remember fighting," it said carefully. "maybe I did. I don’t know. everything before waking up in the trees is just... gone."
"convenient," Reid said, not quite an accusation, but close enough that the creature’s borrowed instincts prickled with alertness.
"I wish it wasn’t," the fake Julian said, letting its voice waver slightly, reaching for the same dry, unbothered humor the real Julian might have used to deflect suspicion. "Please believe me, if I could remember getting my ass kicked by whatever that was, at least I’d have a decent story to tell."
Reid’s mouth twitched, almost a smile despite himself, some of the tension in his shoulders easing. That answer, apparently, matched something familiar enough about Julian’s usual deflections to settle his suspicion, at least for now.
"get some rest," Reid said, standing. "we’ll figure out the details later."
The moment the door shut behind him, the fake Julian’s carefully arranged expression smoothed into something flat and calculating, eyes tracking the empty room with cold, patient stillness.
*Reid notices details. adjust for that. minimize physical evidence next time. avoid direct scrutiny where possible.*
It settled back against the pillows, expression rearranging itself once more into something convincingly exhausted, and closed its eyes, patient and content to wait exactly as long as Xavier required before the real work began.
---
Far beyond the academy walls, in a room that felt nothing like safety despite its soft bed and gentle light, Julian jolted awake with a sharp, unexplainable pain lancing through his chest, right where the mark sat cold and tender beneath his collar.
"host?" the fox said immediately, alert and worried, lifting its head from where it had been curled against his side. "what’s wrong..."
"I don’t know," Julian said, breath catching, hand pressed hard against his collarbone, the mark pulsing faintly beneath his palm in a way it hadn’t done before, not quite pain, not quite anything he had a name for, just wrongness, distant and strange, like something that belonged to him was being used somewhere far away without his permission.
"something feels off," Julian said slowly, staring down at his own hand like it might explain the sensation better than words could. "something feels really, really off."
