Meanwhile, Adrian was on the bed. His wounds had been wrapped up, and he even used multiple healing salves he had gotten from the first couple of settlement rewards.
According to the description, his wounds should heal by the next morning. But his wounds were what kept stinging. It was the words of his ancestors.
He had wanted to use it to heal Mika when she was injured, but couldn’t because of two reasons.
First, Mika wasn’t close to him back then, and second, it was an item that only players could use for some stupid reason. But now that she had a system, she should also benefit from it, just in case.
While he was lost in thought, the ancestors were having a field day.
[Hey, come look at this great successor of ours!]
[The fool charged at nine wolves, thinking he would kill them all!]
[Boy... I have to agree with them here.]
Adrian sighed, hearing the constant trolling of his ancestors. It got to a point where he began thinking whether they truly wanted him to succeed or if it was just an elaborate prank.
Whatever the case might be, he couldn’t say they were wrong. He assumed the wolves were weak, and they were, since they were only level 5.
What he forgot to consider was their pack mentality and shrewd intelligence. The way they took care of the fence should have made him wary, and it did for a moment.
But after seeing how easily the women were dispatching them, he thought that since he was much stronger, he could take down the alpha.
It didn’t occur to him even for a second that maybe that was what the wolves wanted. As long as they took him down, they could have dealt with the rest.
Perhaps the alpha knew it, and Adrian had fallen right for it.
[Tell me, boy, why did you charge ahead like a maniac?]
"Do you really have to ask? Besides, I didn’t hear you trying to stop me?" Adrian shot back at the Playboy ancestor.
[It is your life to live. Besides, this is all for a child... about which you should be hearing soon.]
"..."
[You still haven’t answered the question, young one.]
It was the voice of the scholar. Adrian could already imagine the guy laughing his ass off, but trying to hold back.
Why did he do it? Wasn’t it obvious?
"Did you guys expect me to let an alpha creature slip from my grasp?"
[It still did, didn’t it?]
"At least I tried!" Adrian scoffed. "Do you geezers have any idea how rare they can be?"
[Two of them came to your doorstep in four days.]
"..."
It was only after the ancestor mentioned it that he noticed how ridiculous it was. Logically speaking, the alpha creatures should be few and far between, but statistics said otherwise. 𝒻𝓇𝑒𝘦𝘸𝑒𝒷𝓃ℴ𝑣𝘦𝑙.𝒸ℴ𝘮
The more he thought about it, the more he realized how foolish he had been. Maybe there wasn’t any need to force things.
"I think I took the advancement quest too literally..." he mumbled, scratching his head.
[Good things take time, young one.]
Perhaps for the first time, the Scholar ancestor had spoken to him like that. But Adrian didn’t point that out and just slept. After all, he still had a lot to do the next morning.
***
The next morning, Adrian stepped out of the longhouse with a frown. His wounds had healed overnight, as mentioned, but he was still suffering from lingering pain.
If not for his high willpower, the pain would have been much worse.
"I shouldn’t be complaining about this," he muttered, walking into the open area.
As soon as he did that, Amika, who was picking grass for the chickens, saw him and rushed over.
"Are you feeling well?" Amika asked, gently touching his bandaged arm.
"As good as new," he smiled, flexing his muscles for her to see. "Just a little sore, that’s all. Nothing to worry about since it will pass once I get to work."
"That’s good. I was so scared—" Amika said, but suddenly her face went pale.
She pressed a hand to her mouth, turned away quickly, and rushed toward the side of the longhouse. Within seconds, loud retching sounds followed as she bent over and threw up.
"Amika!" Nixa exclaimed, rushing after her.
The rest of them also hurried after her, with Mika gently patting her sister’s back. However, Adrian’s feet were rooted to the spot. The Scholar ancestor’s words kept repeating in his head.
[Besides, this is all for a child... about which you should be hearing soon.]
A strange feeling filled Adrian. Was it excitement? Worry? Or was it something else? He had no idea. This was all new to him.
"No way..." he whispered, feeling his heart pounding. "She’s pregnant... I’m about to have a child!?"
[Why are you acting surprised? You were quite brazen before and—]
"I’m going to be dad, you fuckers! It’s time for celebration!"
He felt elated for a moment before a wave of worry crashed over him.
This was a primitive world with no hospitals, no doctors, no proper medicine. How was she supposed to give birth here? What if something went wrong? What if there were complications? The thought of Amika suffering or worse made his stomach churn.
"Fuck..." he cursed, running a hand through his hair. "I should’ve kept it in my pants. I got too carried away and now..."
Guilt hit him like truck-kun. He had been so focused on enjoying himself that he never once thought about the consequences. In this savage world, childbirth was dangerous, even for a healthy woman like Amika.
Wait... It’s the fifth day, right? I’ll be going back in a couple of days.
Maybe it was not all bad. He could go back to his world and perhaps bring back useful things like medicines or even some equipment to help.
[Don’t even think about it.]
"Why not?" Adrian shot back. "I can bring back what she needs—"
[You are already standing out far too much. Bringing modern technology or knowledge into this primitive world will definitely catch her attention.]
[When that happens, all hell will break loose. Not just for you, but for all of us. Besides, it’s not like you can just buy that stuff, even if you had money, which you don’t.]
Adrian’s blood boiled at the Scholar ancestor’s response. Sure, it could ruin his life, but so what? Should he sacrifice Amika and his unborn child so that he could live? What kind of life would be that?
"So I’m just supposed to sit here and endanger Amika and my unborn child?" he snarled. "Fuck that! I won’t let anything happen to them. If I have to risk everything, then so be it. It’s not like it’s the first time either of us will die!"
The ancestors fell silent for a moment. Given the life Adrian had lived, they didn’t think it would be that big of a deal for him.
After all, this Savage Earth was supposed to be a testing ground for them to check if all of their blessings were working as intended before sending Adrian to other worlds to explore.
However, for the character he showed there, made even the ancestors rethink their decision.
[...I see. Your resolve is noted, young one. I will think of something to assist you since there is enough time to do something about it.]
