"Awooo!"
A familiar howl shattered the forest’s silence. However, unlike the last time, there wasn’t just one howl, but multiple. Apart from the side facing the stream, the settlement was surrounded.
Adrian turned around and saw over a dozen shining pairs of eyes staring at them. From what little of their silhouette he could see in the moonlight, they weren’t anything like the alpha wolf he faced before.
Size-wise, they were much smaller, but they were younger and bulked up with muscles. That was all of them, other than the one standing on top of a protruding rock.
That wolf alone was twice the size of the others and looked like it had been exercising for ages. Without a doubt, that one was their leader.
"But why are they here?" Adrian mumbled, holding his spear in one hand and dagger in the other.
Based on his theory, the old wolf he had killed had been abandoned by its pack. So, it was unlikely that these wolves were there for revenge, but Adrian couldn’t think of another reason.
Just then, a wolf charged straight at the fence with terrifying speed. It slammed against it with the full force of its body. It seemed these wolves had already hunted some players and knew how to take down the fence.
It hit Adrian. It could be that these wolves had gotten used to attacking players instead of hunting normally. After all, a player with a fence would be a decent one and might even have food reserves.
The wolves would kill the player and take over that food to lead an easy life.
Most likely, that old wolf might have been used as a fence breaker, and when he lost his use, they abandoned it.
Unfortunately for the wolf in question, it was a mistake to pull the same manoeuvre against his fence.
Instead of hitting the wooden stumps, the wolf hit the thorny vines of the fence. The purple venom-coated thorns sank deep into the wolf’s side and shoulder, forcing it to yelp in pain.
"Are they blind or too hungry to give a fuck about the vines?" Sera mumbled, clutching a spear.
Adrian didn’t question, he just smiled. Meanwhile, the wolf let out a painful yelp as it staggered backwards. The refined venom quickly entered its bloodstream, and its movements became sluggish.
Within seconds, foamy saliva dripped from its mouth, showing that poison had already spread through its body.
Adrian turned to see the pack leader for its reaction. However, it didn’t panic. In fact, none of the wolves panicked or backed away.
"Don’t tell me—"
Before he could even finish the words, the wolves gathered near the poisoned wolf. Two larger wolves grabbed the poisoned one and placed it against the fence.
"Woo..."
The poisoned wolf whimpered as more thorns pricked its body. But the rest of them didn’t care and charged towards the poisoned wolf.
"These bastards..." Adrian cursed, realizing what they were doing.
Instead of hitting the fence directly, they began hitting the poisoned wolf. Adrian was taken aback by their brutality, but he still trusted the fence.
However, after a few dozen hits, that section of the fence creaked under the repeated strikes and bent a bit.
As soon as it did, the wolves used the body of their poisoned comrade as a stepping stool to jump the bent section of the fence.
Adrian’s eyes widened in awe and disbelief. He hadn’t expected this level of intelligence or savagery from the pack. No wonder they had abandoned the old wolf. This new leader of theirs was much more brutal.
As soon as the first wolf entered the settlement, they formed a defensive line near the longhouse while Huginn let out a piercing cry from above and Freki growled, stepping forward with bared fangs.
"Attack!" Adrian roared, charging towards the wolves.
Freki charged right behind him while Huginn shot into the sky. Adrian didn’t know why, but only eight wolves had jumped the fence, the rest were gathered around the leader, watching on with interest.
One of the wolves opened its mouth to issue commands, but the moment it did, Mika threw her spear right into its mouth. The stone tip exploded out the back of its skull, killing it instantly.
"Nice throw!" Adrian shouted, tossing his spear to her.
Meanwhile, the women charged at the wolves without fear. Thanks to Mika’s relentless training, their spear work was sharp and coordinated.
Nixa thrust her spear into a wolf’s side, the wolf jumped to the side, only to head straight into Rixxa’s spear. The wolf couldn’t dodge the blow in mid-air, but Rixxa’s strength wasn’t enough to inflict a grievous wound to the wolf.
"Huginn, harass!" Adrian yelled, pointing at the injured wolf.
Just then, Huginn flew downward, sank her talons into the existing wound, and ripped off a huge chunk of the wolf’s flesh. The wolf howled in pain and tried to bite Huginn, but she had already moved, clawing and biting the wolf’s neck.
On one side, Amika and Amiya stood back to back, facing two wolves. They were in a stalemate until Mika rushed to their side, tackling one wolf to the ground before repeatedly stabbing it with the spear.
Taking the chance, Amika and Amiya lunged at the second wolf. Amika managed to impale the wolf through the ribs and held it in place while Amiya finished the job by repeatedly stabbing the wolf’s head.
As the wolf whimpered to death, they seemed surprised that it was so easy to handle the wolf. Usually, they would all have to work together to kill just a single wolf, yet now they were fighting eight of them at once and did not get injured.
As soon as they thought that, a bloodcurdling scream tore through the chaos. They turned around and saw Sera clutching her left forearm.
A wolf had scratched her forearm, and it was bleeding profusely. The wolf smelled blood and was about to bite her again when suddenly Sera began giggling.
"Hehe... hehehe..."
Even the wolf was taken aback as she stood and licked her wound before fixing her gaze at the wolf.
"Bad doggy... You must be put down," she smiled.
[Taunt successful!]
[Target has been enraged.]
Those words flashed before Seraphine as the wolf lunged at her. She didn’t back away. Instead, she performed a backflip, just like Adrian had before, and kicked the wolf in the head.
Staggered, the wolf shook its head while stepping away. But Seraphine wasn’t going to let it be. She grabbed a front and a hind leg and yanked the wolf off its feet, turning it belly up.
"Aww... you want belly rubs?" she asked in a puppy voice before stabbing the spear right into the wolf’s stomach. "Enjoy it to your heart’s content!"
She yanked the spear upwards, then downwards, then pushed it back upwards like the spear was her hand and she was actually giving the wolf belly rubs.
The wolf howled in pain as its guts fell to the ground, but Seraphine didn’t stop and kept churning its innards.
"See? Doesn’t that feel nice?" she cooed, stepping on its head until she saw the kill notification, which immediately soured her mood. "Bad doggy! I wanted to play more!"
