"Meemaw, I know you hate the exercises but you have to do them."

I hung up, dropped the phone on the kitchen counter with a clatter and turned off the stove.

"Chicken soup?" I mumbled, stirring the murky liquid with a spoon.

Annette’s eyes widened and he popped a brow up. "How do you even mess up chicken soup?"

"Everyone’s a critic," I sniffed, dropping the spoon against the pot. "Chinese?"

She beamed at me, hugging me that silly blanket. "You should have just done that instead of this. Order chicken wings too. And their fried rice. I need all my strength, I’m going to give that asshole a good talking to."

That drew a giggle out of my throat. I grabbed my keys and left the apartment to drive to the Chinese restaurant some ten minutes away. I was waiting in line when my phone pinged with a notification.
