The walk through the club was the longest of my life. My heartbeat thumped fast in my chest like I was on a marathon sprint.

Finnegan marched ahead of me, his shoes stomping into the ground with each step. I gripped the mask against my face. The clasp had been destroyed when he yanked it, so I had to hold it against my face.

The urge to bail out of there slammed against my spine. What would running do though? I would still have to see him at work on Monday.

Even if it would be to collect my sack letter.

I was fired. Definitely and most certainly. The anger on his face told me that much. My legs were shaking so badly the heels of my shoes caught against each other from how terrified I was.

The music thumped and a sea of bodies moved around us in the arena. Nobody in this room had any idea that my entire life was about to fall apart in real time.

Maybe, he wasn’t so angry?

My eyes followed his tense, rigid shoulders and the large vein popping in his neck. Nope, he was furious and I was about to be reduced to chum.

He glanced back once to check if I was still behind him, and the outrage burning in his eyes had my heart slamming against my ribcage in fear.

What should I do now? How much did he know exactly? Had he approached me on purpose after knowing my identity or did he just find out?

We got into the elevator that led out if the club and I waited, agonizingly for him to say something. Anything at all. The silence was suffocating and I could hear every shaky inhale and exhale I took.

He said nothing. His jaw clenched tight, his hands were balled into fists and for the first time since I met him, I was on the receiving end of his cold anger.

It didn’t feel pretty.

The elevator doors dinged open. I moved to the locker to get my purse while he waited by the exit door.

What exactly did he want? Were we going to talk about this or-

"Are you going to fucking stand there all night?!" He snapped, jolting me upright.

My lips pressed into a flat line and I slammed the locker close.

"Finnegan-"

He didn’t wait to hear the rest and stormed out through the exit. A sigh left my lips and I wiped my hands nervously over my dress, following him out into the parking lot.

He stopped abruptly before a vehicle and turned, halting me in my tracks.

The parking lot was half empty, the nearest people to us were a couple about twenty feet away eating at each other’s faces.

The orange glow of the overhead lights only made his face look harsher.

I should have known this day would come.

"Finnegan, I... I can explain,"

"Then explain," He demanded, tilting his head up as he glared down at me.

"Wh–what?" I stammered, searching for words, any words to save my soul from this messy spiral.

"Do explain how you have been deceiving me, Miss Kellerman. Did you follow me here on purpose? Was this some grand plan to get me to sleep with you?"

"No!" I gasped, shaking my head. "It wasn’t like that. I didn’t plan any of this,"

"So you didn’t know who I was." He cut across me, turning to yank open his car door, reaching inside. "When you approached me that night, you didn’t know?"

I knew. I did.

I just,... God, what would I even say that wouldn’t sound like I was digging my grave deeper?

He straightened and turned back, holding his phone up.

"Or let me guess, you also hadn’t known it was me on that plane either when you walked into my office for a job!?"

On the screen of his phone was a photograph. My photograph. The one from the package that I had burned in my kitchen.

"How many more?" His voice cracked on the last word slightly and I took a step back, stunned by the harrowing look in those green eyes as they narrowed at me. "How many more lies, Abigail? I’m guessing stealing the package meant for me wasn’t on purpose either!"

Beads of sweat broke out on my forehead, my hands trembled but I didn’t have anything to say. He knew everything. Oh my god, he knew I took that package. My mouth opened but not a word came out.

"For someone who always has something to say," he laughed harshly, the cold sound grating against my ears.

"Your sassy mouth has gone very quiet. What? Tell me I’m wrong? You’re very good at that, aren’t you? Tell me I’m fucking delusional and I haven’t been pining for the same woman for almost six bloody months!"

"I’m... I’m sorry," I whispered, a knot twisting in my stomach. My hands grew clammy and sweaty, a lump rapidly forming in my throat. A look of hurt creased his face as his chest heaved in anger.

I hurt him.

"Do you have any idea..." He stopped, dragging a hand through his hair, closing his eyes in anguish.

"Do you have any idea how long I searched for you as Red?" A short humorless sound left him.

"I thought I was losing my mind. I wanted three different women with a madness I couldn’t explain and I was sure I was going insane. But it was you all along. You stood in my office every single bloody day and looked me in the eye,"

"I...I was afraid,"

"You were afraid." He stepped closer, looming above me, every instinct in my body told me to step back, but I dug my heels harder into the pavement, struggling to swallow the lump in my throat.

"You couldn’t tell me we met on that plane. Fine, I can understand that, maybe I can understand that. But then you came to this club and you came to me. You, Abigail. Still you said nothing. You went to such great lengths,"

His hand reached forward to grab a handful of my hair. "You even changed your hair color and wore contacts, all just to hide who you were. Fuck, Abigail, you can’t tell me you were afraid, dammit!"

But I was. I really was.

"You could have told me that night at the office. When you found the package, you could have-" he made an agonizing sound, grabbing my jaw. "I asked you that night, if you were certain you didn’t get it. I asked you and you looked me in the eyes and lied."

"Finn, I’m sorry,"

His grip tightened around my jaw as he whispered in a wrecked voice. "I made love to you that night. Do you understand that? I have never... I never..." He cut himself off again, dragging a hand over his face.

I’m so sorry.

I wanted to say that, but I knew those words weren’t enough. I took a step toward him anyway, my hand reaching for him but he swatted it off, his eyes watching me warily.

"I trusted you," he said quietly. "It looks like I’ve made a mistake."

He turned and got into the car.

"Finn," I called moving closer to the vehicle and jumping back when he turned on the engine. He didn’t spare me a glance as he revved the car, and drove out of the parking lot.

My phone rang as I watched him drive off. I fished the device out of my purse and picked the call without thinking. The next thing I heard dealt a blow to my stomach, making me double over and my vision spin around me.
