The warm water in the tub had gone lukewarm by the time River knocked on the bathroom door.

"Thanks, River," I murmured, plucking the phone from her hands.

I flipped her the middle finger while she threw her head back in silent laughter and sauntered out of the room.

I swiped the screen to answer the call, stepping away from the bathroom door so Abigail wouldn’t hear. "Martha. What is it?"

Her voice was shaky, barely above a whisper. "Finnegan... Devin is alive. I saw him yesterday at the mansion. He came through the hidden gate. I was hiding... I saw him with my own eyes. What is going on? How is he alive?"

I shut my eyes for a second; the confirmation landed like a second blow to the gut, even though I already knew. "I know, Martha. I found out last night as well. Stay safe. Don’t say anything to anyone. I’ll handle it."

"I still can’t believe it. Your mother, she..." She trailed off for a few seconds before dropping her voice to a whisper.

"I overheard them talking yesterday. Your mother, Victoria, and Devin. They’re planning something big for the company. I couldn’t hear everything, but it sounded dangerous. I made a recording on my phone. I’ll send it to you now."

"Thanks, Martha. Please do."

Barely two minutes after I ended the call, the recording arrived in a text. I played the audio file. The voices sounded distant, but I recognized Mom’s voice.

Then a voice I hadn’t heard in fifteen years reached my ears. My fingers tightened around the device until it creaked, the screen cracking under the pressure.

That asshole. Fuck, for years I had carried his death on my conscience like I was the one who killed him, and he was alive all along?!

I needed to call an emergency board meeting for tomorrow. I couldn’t let my mother make another move without me being ready.

Gasps rippled through the room. Directors exchanged shocked glances. Pretenders. Some of them had obviously sold their shares to Mother.

My lawyer rose, took the documents from my mother, and reviewed them, flipping through the pages with a furrowed brow. Finally, he looked up.

"This appears valid, Mrs. Wolfe," he stated reluctantly. "You do hold 48%."

Mother smiled triumphantly. "Then I can now become CEO of Wolfe Corporation."

The room erupted in murmurs. I leaned back in my chair, watching her with narrowed eyes.

I slid a thick folder across the table toward her, and it shouldn’t have pleased me to see the worry flicker in my mother’s eyes, but it did.
