"Abby, Holy shit. You have to see this."

Annette’s socks appeared in my vision, then her knees as she dropped down beside me, her laptop balanced in both hands.

"If it’s some bad news, I might need another thirty seconds with this ice cream." I mumbled, clutching my tub of ice cream like my life depended on it.

As if almost getting frisky with my boss wasn’t enough, Drake and Alicia had the mother-flipping guts to threaten me.

How the mighty had fallen.

Why did they want a meeting with him so bad?

"It’s not bad news." She turned the screen toward me. "I looked into Alicia Duke."

I took the laptop, scanning through a grid of images. They were pulled from what looked like old social media archives. I scrolled further down, the images got blurry and older until I paused over a particular picture.

There was a skinny girl, her hair tied in pigtails, round oversized glasses perched on her nose and there was a gap between her front teeth as she gave a very familiar toothy grin at the camera. Behind her was a building with the words Malcolm Middle school.

"Didn’t you attend Malcolm Middle school?" Annette asked, nudging my shoulders. We hadn’t attended the same middle school.

"No way." I gasped, bringing the screen closer. That was Alicia? "She’s Skinny Lee."

Annette snickered. "She’s what now?"

"Skinny Lee." I turned the laptop back toward her and pointed. "That’s what everyone called her. She was a year below me, I didn’t even know her actual name. She was just skinny Lee. She mostly kept to herself... well until she didn’t."

Annette pulled the laptop back, squinting at the photograph. "What did she do?"

I dug the spoon into the ice cream. It was a stupid party Portia had thrown when her parents weren’t home. I had told Meemaw I was going to the library and had snuck to Portia’s party instead.

I couldn’t even remember what had caused the fight. All I knew was we were screaming at each other one moment while everyone around us called her Skinny Lee.

She got furious and messed up saying "At least my parents didn’t die because of me. Your parents died because they couldn’t stand having someone like you!"

I hadn’t even joined in calling her names yet she at poked at my innocent dead parents.

She had said so with that toothy grin and those ridiculous glasses. "Your mom was so dumb, she got killed by her own car,"

My fifteen-year old head had exploded in anger. What I had done was locate the nearest bucket of beer, which was large and full and very cold, and introduce her face to it.

"Keep my parents out of your thin mouth."

She had tried fighting but I fought harder, we pretty much ruined Portia’s garden.

"Damn, I’m sure you gave her a good thrashing," Annette chuckled when I told her. "So she’s been holding a grudge since what, you were fifteen?"

I handed the laptop back and reached for another scoop of ice cream. This had to be some sort of joke. Alicia Duke was Skinny Lee. I didn’t even know her name.

Annette set the laptop on the coffee table, pulling her knees to her chest. "So that’s why she’s coming after you? Because of a fight in middle school? 𝙛𝒓𝒆𝙚𝒘𝒆𝓫𝙣𝓸𝙫𝓮𝒍.𝒄𝒐𝓶

"A fight that she started. I genuinely do not care why she’s coming after me." I pointed the spoon at the screen.

"What I care about is proving she’s working with Carlton Gayle before Drake’s two days are up. I know about the envelope from her office but she could have moved it by now. I need something that puts her and Gayle in the same room, on record and she’s done for."

"If Alicia and Drake are possibly working together," Annette drawled, rubbing her jaw. "why aren’t we tracking Drake?"

"And how would we do that?"

"I have his IP." She shrugged. "From his phone. I got it a while back. I was going to do...something with it."

The ice cream tub dropped with a thunk on the table as I crossed the carpet on my knees, took her face in both hands, and kissed her cheek hard enough that she squeaked.

"You," I gushed. "are a genius. An unhinged genius and I love you."

"I know." She cackled, reaching for the laptop. "Bow before my ingenuity. All I have to do is hack into his phone and boom, we can get his messages and pretty much anything we need."

"Gosh, what would I do without you?"

"Beat up skinny Lee, maybe?" She suggested and I burst into laughter, swatting her arm.

I leaned in, watching her fingers tap the keys hard and fast as she worked.

Drake’s phone was embarrassingly easy apparently. He had no digital hygiene, no VPN, his location services were on everything. Hacking into his phone was easy peasy.

"Look what we have here," Annette grinned proudly, flipping the screen to me. There was a message on the screen from sweet old, skinny Lee.

Alicia: He’s meeting us tomorrow morning, seven am. Bingley cafe.

"They’re meeting Gayle?" I breathed, checking the time the message was sent. It was bad forty minutes ago.

Wasn’t Bingley cafe close to Carlton Gayle’s company?

"We’ll find out tomorrow," Annette replied, opening Drake’s Instagram. "Now you said something about this asshole threatening you, right?"

"Mhmm," I grabbed my ice cream tub again, excitement surging through me.

Tomorrow I would get the proof I needed against Alicia and then I would hand it all over to Finn. I was sure he would do much worse than just firing her.

Annette’s happy giggling drew me from my thoughts. I glanced at the screen and almost spat the ice cream in my mouth all over her face.

"Oh my god, Annette, are those nudes of Drake?"

She grinned and showed me the Instagram DMs the bastard had been sending nudes to.

"How about we leave a little present for Drakey Drake?"
