Entering the Dean’s office at this time, Kaizer was starkly different from before. Previously, the young man was simply lean and relatively fit due to a sparse workout routine to maintain his health, but the current Kaizer was extremely toned.
Since Kaizer was wearing a light blue t-shirt and a pair of cargo shorts, one could see his arms which were lined with muscles, and his legs which seemed to have been sculpted carefully to be perfect.
Even as he had a seat, the Dean sized him up with a smile, extremely satisfied with Kaizer’s physical growth in this time, which showed how hard-working the young man had been, not skimping on any of the workouts.
"You were looking for me, Dean?" Kaizer asked as he settled into the seat.
"Correct. I have been monitoring your training progress remotely, and I was quite pleased with the progress you made. Though there were some hiccups, overall you’ve proven to be quite studious." Dean Rochester spoke first as he clasped his fingers together.
He then touched a bunch of documents upon his desk and slowly pushed them over. "However, the month is about to end and you have to start getting ready to take on your mission for the month. Since this will be your first public esper mission, I have carefully selected the contents and applied for the execution of it."
Kaizer scanned the document, opening it with telekinesis and flipping through it rapidly as his blue eyes only needed a moment to scan the content within before it became stuck in his head, a part of his psychic ability that had developed after the Dean’s training.
When he was done, Kaizer was pensive, his expression full of a mixture of strangeness and concern.
"Those guys..."
Dean Rochester chuckled. "Surprised? I told you about the danger surrounding your sister and I felt that as her brother, you were more than likely working so hard to become strong enough to clear the obstacles in her way."
"To that end, it’s best to make your mission revolve around this so you see the depth of trouble she is in and redouble your efforts when you are done." Dean Rochester concluded as he tilted his body to the side, working on his kettle to start boiling tea.
Kaizer’s eyes fell on the document again. His mission was quite simple, to follow the traces left by those two fellows he once fought, Barnes and Lyle, who had been expelled by the Ancients and were put on a wanted list for their people to hunt down.
This wanted order was not limited to the Ancients, but was also sent to the Esper Commission, which Dean Rochester snapped up as Kaizer had told him about everything that occurred at that time.
This mission could be said to be a piece of cake. Putting aside his status as an S class esper, even back then when he hadn’t killed those special ops men and his range was limited to the default 100 meters, he could take the three of them down.
After his recent training, he basically only needed to look their way once and they would crumble in his presence.
Even in terms of tracking them, this was easy as their last approximate location was in the sewers of Alpha City, a complex network of tunnels and drains that bled out into the nearby bay. With his Telesthesia to scan the area and Telepathy to read the minds of anyone who last saw them through questioning, he was built to succeed.
However, the difficulty in this mission presented itself in the competition. This was not a solo mission, but a mass recruitment type where anyone could pick it up at any time, and the wanted order was sent out 2 weeks ago.
Thanks to the Dean’s networking abilities, the document stated that from the Esper Commission alone, seven B class espers and 2 A class ones had accepted the task. As for those whom the Ancients themselves sent, there was no information on them or their powers, even Dean Rochester’s fingers did not stretch that far.
Kaizer was not sure how to deal with such foes if they showed up. Should he negotiate with them or beat them down? He wasn’t the type to say that he would wait and see how they acted first, because he did not like to be reactive, so he had to have a game plan ahead of time.
...kill them? That would increase his power and potential, also being quite easy to kill as there were quite a few killing techniques he had learned through the combat training with the dummy, unless the powers his competitors possessed were special.
Kaizer thought about it and felt that this was something he needed to consult the Dean about for a clear answer. The problem was that to consult his mentor, he would need to divulge the secret of his endless growth, which was why he was a bit unsure.
Seeing Kaizer like this, the Dean was aware that the young man was struggling with something, raising an eyebrow with interest. "Is there a problem, Kaizer? Do you need my help for anything?"
Kaizer struggled a bit internally but finally lifted his head. "Dean Rochester... Grandpa William. What I am about to tell you can shake the entire esper world and its repercussions are something I cannot predict."
Kaizer looked towards the portrait in which Dean Rochester and his grandfather were arm in arm, looking like best friends. "But I am choosing to trust you because you are the only one apart from my sister qualified to know."
Dean Rochester’s smile faded and he nodded his head seriously, sitting up. "Kaizer, we can take an oath to protect your secret. Even with my power, the oath from that fellow S class esper is unbreakable for me lest I suffer intense consequences."
But surprisingly, Kaizer shook his head. "I called you Grandpa William, which shows that I am willing to trust you. The issue is quite simple..."
Kaizer then proceeded to explain his endless growth ability to the Dean, whose eyes widened by the end, his nose releasing breaths like a working bellows. He stood up immediately and began pacing back and forth in the room, his eyes full of uncharacteristic craziness as he mumbled to himself under his breath.
Kaizer did not blame him, because he understood that someone with the Dean’s level of knowledge and foresight could see farther than him, understanding deeper consequences from his ability.
In the end, the Dean calmed down and sat down, taking a deep sip of his tea before collecting his thoughts.
"Kaizer, I sincerely thank you for trusting me by letting me know about this. This changes many things, especially in regards to how you are to approach your future training."
Dean Rochester sighed and placed his hands on the table. "But before that, the most important thing to know is how you want to proceed. Are you willing to kill to become stronger?"
Kaizer was silent for a bit. "Somewhat. I already have, during the attack on Summit Hill University, which almost tripled my base power." 𝓯𝙧𝙚𝒆𝙬𝙚𝒃𝙣𝙤𝒗𝓮𝓵.𝙘𝙤𝙢
Dean Rochester sighed with relief. "Okay, okay, I was scared that you were going to say something extremely humanitarian. While I don’t support murder, you have to understand Kaizer, that the esper world doesn’t give you the choice."
"Like with Carla, like with Summit Hill University, there will come situations where your hand is forced or it is in your best interest to extinguish a life. However, you mustn’t be foolish and create a creed or a code or anything like that." Dean Rochester emphasized.
Kaizer was stunned. "Why? Wouldn’t that be better?"
"Not at all. Creating a creed means that you are regarding your kills as for the purpose of increasing your power, which is the wrong way to go about it. Rather than that, you must regard your kills as being for the purpose of killing, with the benefit of your power increasing as an unintended bonus."
Dean Rochester gave Kaizer a meaningful look. "After all, the reason you are killing them is not to increase your power, but for another purpose. This means that even if you did not possess that endless growth ability and were still thrust into that same situation, you would have killed them anyway. If so, why attribute the need for power growth and unnecessarily burden your mind?"
It must be said that these words were like a thunderbolt that struck the head of the young man, causing him to go blank. He had never thought of it this way, because he was a 19-year-old youth influenced by fictional media in which strong-willed protagonists were always challenged by their creed and morals to remain true to themselves.
However, fiction was fiction because it was, in essence, drama. It was naturally exaggerated to drive interest and reduce boredom, which was why such angsty protagonists were so popular, but reality did not need to be like that.
Just like with Carla, he did not know about his endless growth but he still had to kill her anyway because it concerned survival. Just like the attack on his school, he killed those gunmen, because he had to get through them to save Rina.
