Kaizer walked out of the hospital room after feeling his energy return, turning towards Rina’s own private ward. When he got to the door, he pushed it open gently to see that his sister was silently glancing out of the open window, looking at the residential area of the Esper Academy in silence.
Kaizer stepped inside quietly, letting the door click shut behind him.
The room was bathed in the soft glow of late afternoon sunlight, casting long shadows over the pristine white sheets and the small vase of flowers by the bedside table.
Rina sat on the edge of the hospital bed, her legs tucked up, arms wrapped loosely around them. The wind from the open window stirred her long red hair, making it sway lightly as she stared out, lost in thought.
She didn’t acknowledge him immediately.
Kaizer sighed. "You’re going to ignore me now?"
Rina exhaled through her nose, shaking her head. "No."
He walked closer, pulling a chair beside her bed. "Then what’s with the brooding? You’re usually the one waking me up with some sarcastic remark."
Still, she didn’t turn to face him, rather looking upward. "I’ve just been... thinking."
Kaizer studied her carefully. Her fingers, normally idle and fidgeting, were unnaturally still while her shoulders had that slight tension she tried to hide whenever something really bothered her.
He leaned back. "Is there something wrong, Rina?"
Finally, she turned to face him, her green eyes meeting his. "You almost died, Kaizer."
The words weren’t loud, but they were heavy, far heavier than the weight of the train Kaizer carried.
Kaizer breathed out slowly, folding his arms. "I’m fine, Rina. It was an unexpected situation, but—"
"Don’t!!" she interrupted sharply.
She closed her eyes and continued softly. "Don’t say it like that."
Kaizer paused, deciding to keep quiet for now.
Rina’s jaw clenched as she forced herself to keep her voice low. "Do you think I don’t know how strong you are? That I don’t know how much you’ve grown? But strength means nothing if you just die before it even matters!"
Kaizer frowned. "I wasn’t reckless, Rina."
She let out a bitter laugh. "That’s precisely the problem. Even when you’re careful, people like that bastard..."
Rina’s fingers tightened around her arms, knuckles becoming pale, "...can still throw you into situations where survival isn’t guaranteed."
Kaizer knew immediately who she meant. "Davion."
Her whole body tensed. "I hate him."
Her voice was quiet, but the intent behind it was terrifying. Rina had never used the word ’hate’ on anyone before, not even the gunmen who killed her at Summit Hill University, so this was a first for Kaizer.
Kaizer nodded. "I understand."
Rina’s nails dug into her skin. "No, brother, you don’t understand. I truly hate him. Not in the way you hate someone annoying, or even an enemy. I hate him in a way that makes me want to erase his entire family, friends, and loved ones just to see him cry."
The sheer finality in her words made the room feel colder, and the sincerity behind them made it clear that this was not an exaggeration.
Kaizer didn’t respond immediately, waiting for Rina to share why this bothered her. 𝙛𝒓𝓮𝒆𝔀𝒆𝙗𝓷𝒐𝙫𝒆𝙡.𝒄𝓸𝓶
Her hands shook slightly. "It scares me."
Kaizer felt his chest tighten as the vulnerability Rina was revealing made his brotherly instincts surge, but he suppressed them so as to not ruin the moment.
"I know I’m not a normal esper since my death energy is already deadly." Rina said slowly, turning her head away.
She paused and took a shaky breath. "But when I think about him... when I remember how he used his puppet to toy with you, how he forced you into that fight out of petty jealousy—"
Her fingers clutched at the edge of her white jacket, twisting it strongly. "I want to lose control. I want to let the hatred take over. I want him to disappear slowly, feeling every second of despair and agony that comes with my ability."
Kaizer reached out, placing a firm hand over hers. "You won’t lose control."
Rina scoffed but did not push his hand away. "You can’t be sure of that."
"No, I cannot." He admitted honestly.
Kaizer squeezed her hand gently. "But you wouldn’t be telling me this if you wanted to give in and go on a frenzy at that guy’s clan manor. You’re like this precisely because you don’t want to cross that line. And that’s why you won’t."
Rina swallowed hard, looking away as a long silence stretched between them.
Then, in a soft, weak whisper, she shared her truest feelings: "I can’t lose you."
Kaizer felt her fear and despair in that one line, raw and direct.
"I can handle anything, Kaizer. The missions, the fights, the training. I don’t care how much I have to suffer, how much I have to push myself." Her fingers trembled beneath his, but she didn’t let go.
"But the thought of you dying when I’m not around to help... the thought of you just being gone..." Her voice cracked as she bit her lips, fighting back tears.
Kaizer moved gently, pulling her into his embrace, wrapping his arms around her. Rina was surprised by this as she stiffened for half a second, before she finally couldn’t hold it in anymore.
Her hands clutched at the back of his shirt as she buried her face against his shoulder. Her breathing hitched, and Kaizer could feel the way she shook gently as she sobbed softly, trying not to be a nuisance.
Kaizer didn’t say anything, just holding her tighter while she expressed her feelings.
"Don’t leave me behind," Rina begged at the height of her sorrow.
Kaizer raised his head and looked outward, an intense blue light flashing in their depths.
"I won’t. Not now, not ever." He swore from the depths of his heart.
..........
Kaizer left Rina’s ward with a calm expression, but his heart felt heavy.
He had taken too much for granted. Because of Anir, and because of Summit Hill University, he was aware that Rina was technically invincible and factually unkillable until her natural lifespan expired.
Like Reaper, she was an unsolvable problem if she was your foe unless - like Reaper - you got rid of her without killing her, either sealing her or taking her far away.
So he had never worried about her well-being because even if she was thrown into a battlefield with guns and warheads, she would theoretically be able to come back endlessly with Anir’s help, especially after Kaizer resolved the issue of her first ’death.’
Likewise, before this point, Rina never really worried about Kaizer. Not only was Kaizer meticulous and careful, but he was extremely powerful and had their covenant special ability to become endlessly stronger with no upper limit.
In her mind, Kaizer becoming the strongest was not a matter of if, but when. Even now, there were few who could match him, and this was proven through the initial manor fight, with Kaizer taking down the Bjorn guy on his own.
But the appearance of Davion, who evaded his telesthesia and negated his telekinesis, hinted at a problem the duo had ignored, which was exactly why Reaper - despite all his power - was taken down and prevented from ever seeing his daughter grow up.
There was no truly unsolvable issue in the world.
An enemy who controlled death, insta-killing any foe while resurrecting any ally or even himself? Fine, bypass death and seal him up.
An enemy who had great telekinetic power and a psychic domain that expanded his senses outward? Fine, utilize telekinetic-resistant items and a special method/equipment item that would evade the five senses.
Elaine, the Veil Witch, could run away for this reason - using her illusion power to deceive the five senses and displace her thoughts - so why couldn’t Davion also approach? It was just a bad matchup that Davion was also a doll maker who eliminated the thoughts of his creations, making telepathy also fail to utilize its advantages.
Anyone else and Kaizer would never have been caught off guard.
Davion came prepared, and as Kaizer’s reputation as the next strongest and as ’Overlord’ spread, his enemies would also be prepared in such a manner.
He couldn’t just rely on the raw power gained through his covenant with Rina because while that would ensure invincibility in terms of raw power and in the long term, Kaizer was well aware that even a vampire with time stop could be beaten by a young man who liked to punch things very hard.
Fictional or not, the point was clear, no matter how overpowered a thing sounded or was, there was a way to solve it that human ingenuity could discover in due time.
In order to never fall into that situation again, Kaizer did not just need power. He needed skill, knowledge, and especially extensive training to be able to react to different situations.
And so, he left the hospital, sat in his car, and sped over to the Dean’s office, for that was where his current problems would find a solution.
