As she spoke, the corners of her lips could not help curling up into a hopeful smile. It was as that moment she had been yearning for was about to arrive.
At this time, the traffic light turned green, so she replaced items in the box. The car continued to driving forward, and as the passed by a pet center, she noticed the interview car of the TV station from a distance.
There were many onlookers at the entrance of the pet center, as if something had happened.
At first, she didn’t pay much attention to it, but she saw a familiar figure coming out of the crowd. It was Lucy.
So, she parked the car by the side of the road, opened the car door, and rushed over. "Lucy."
Lucy had just finished a reporting and was about to return to the TV station when she heard her voice and looked over.
"Janice? Why are you here?"
Lucy was surprised.
Janice replied, "I just happened to pass by. What happened here?"
Lucy leaned over and whispered.
"There was someone making trouble here just now. When the police came, they had already run away. By the way, do you know who was harassed?"
"Who?"
"Sophie Valen"
As soon as Lucy said that, Sophie covered her face and walked out of the crowd in a sorry state.
"Retribution."
Lucy said fiercely.
Janice swept a glance at Sophie’s sorry figure and felt satisfied. However, she didn’t pay too much attention to her. She just continued talking to Lucy instead.
"Let’s go have coffee."
Ten minutes later, the two of them sat down in a cafe nearby.
Lucy ordered for an espresso and Janice called for milkshake instead. When she noticed that Janice ordered milk which was unusual, she frowned.
"If I can remember you used to order your favorite lattes. Why didn’t you order one
today?"
"Oh, I have been having hard time sleeping, so I decided to have some milk instead."
She didn’t want to tell Lucy that she was pregnant.
Lucy didn’t really pay attention and continued.
"How are you and your hubby?"
Janice nodded. "We’re okay. There’s nothing to complain about"
"That’s good. By the way, I met Director Taylor a few days ago. He hasn’t been doing well recently."
Lucy said.
"He... ... what is going on with him?"
Janice asked.
Lucy said, "Something to do with the company, but I don’t know all the details."
Upon hearing Lucy’s words, Janice recalled that she still owed Benjamin a favor. If he had not saved her when Nathan had locked her up, she and her child might have died at the Batemans’ old villa. So immediately after parting company with Lucy, she called Benjamin.
However, no one answered the phone. She only called once and stopped and drove home.
Unexpectedly, Christopher was already at home.
"Didn’t you go to the office?"
She asked, bemused.
When Christopher saw her coming back, he frowned.
He did go to the office, but he had been so distracted the whole morning. He was so unproductive throughout the hours that he decided to come home.
As for the reason, he didn’t want to admit that it was because of Janice. His restless was hers for curing.
He asked, "Where have you been?"
"I went to visit grandpa." she replied.
She wore her slippers and walked in.
Christopher didn’t ask further on that, but his eyes fell on the box in her hands. He thought that it looked a little familiar.
"What is that are you holding?"
Janice was a little stunned. She had almost forgotten about the box in her hands. It
contained Christopher’s childhood possessions. If he knew about it, would he want it back? Thinking of this, she clenched her fists rather tightly and possessively.
"It’s nothing. I’ll go upstairs."
After responding sharply, she hurried upstairs with the box in her hands.
Christopher felt awkward. He believed that something was going on and that she has been acting a little strange recently.
As soon as she returned to the bedroom, she hid the box in the cabinet. This was her little secret storage that she could not let Christopher know of.
She turned back and was about to go downstairs when she bumped into him. "You... why did you come in?"
...
"Why are you panicking?"
Christopher glanced at her bewildered and triggered look.
Janice unconsciously took a step back.
"It’s nothing. Why didn’t you knock when you came in?"
She glanced away with guilt.
He looked at her. "Pay attention next time. Why do you look pale?" 𝒻𝓇𝑒𝘦𝘸𝑒𝒷𝓃ℴ𝑣𝘦𝑙.𝒸ℴ𝘮
"Nothing... What do you want to eat for lunch? I’ll go cook it right away."
After that, she turned around and walked out of the door without waiting for him to speak.
Christopher wanted to stop her, but he didn’t. He could only watch her leave with a helpless frown.
In the next few days, he felt that she was deliberately avoiding him and evading questions she put to him. Every time he approached her, she would run off like a mouse had seen a cat.
He did not really understand what went wrong. Before this, she had used to pester and cling to him all the time.
Therefore, Christopher, who couldn’t figure it out, cornered and asked her honestly, expecting earnest and sincere answers from her.
"Why are you avoiding me?"
He enquired.
She wasn’t prepared for this question and was slightly caught unawares. "No, I am not."
She denied it.
"Yes, you haven’t talked to me much these few days."
Christopher complained.
She was stunned for a second. She didn’t think he would notice.
While avoiding his eyes, she quickly thought of something to avoid the awkward situation.
"No... I just don’t want to disturb you because you’re too tired... By the way, are you hungry? I’ll cook something for you."
She just wanted to avoid him and slide.
How could he not see that she was avoiding him... he removed her arms.
"Wait, is this all you have to say to me?"
For the past few days, all she asked was what he wanted to eat. He had been eating non -stop. He was full of rage when he heard about ’eating’ again. Afterall, she was not a nanny.
She didn’t understand what he was trying to say. He lowered his gaze and didn’t respond.
Seeing her like this, Christopher was afraid that even if he continued asking, she might not understand what he really meant.
He might as well speak the truth.
"Didn’t you say you would help me recall my past?"
Her heart sank. She thought to herself, "Whatever one is afraid, it comes haunting"
Since she knew she was pregnant, she had not dare to be too intimate with him.
That’s what the doctor had advised her.
"How can I help him to recall his past?"
"I..."
She didn’t know how to answer his question.
She hemmed and hawed, making Christopher feel even more frustrated. "Did you change your mind?"
His pupils contracted, exhibiting clear signs of nervousness.
"Huh?"
Janice didn’t understand.
"Tell me the truth. Are you ignoring me?"
His tone grew aggressive and serious. He was not having it this time.
She blinked, unable to react.
"Why do you think so?"
"Isn’t it true? Then why haven’t you cared about me recently?"
He complained so incessantly that Janice grew tired of diverting.
Janice was confused by what his reaction. She had been avoiding him recently, but she would be lying if she said that she didn’t care about him.
"I..."
Not only was she pussyfooting, but she was also trying to avoid him. He forcefully raised her chin up and forced her to look at him.
"Look into my eyes."
Janice had no choice but to glance at him, but she still didn’t dare look him in the eye.
"Why don’t you dare look at me in my eyes?"
"I didn’t..."
She felt guilty and didn’t know what to do.
"Yes you did. You’re avoiding me."
He said as he gave a confrontational stare into her eyes as if he had already confirmed it.
Janice was at a loss. She didn’t want Christopher to misunderstand her, neither did she know how to put it to him. For a moment, she was put in the spot and she moved his hand away.
...
"I... I just feel a little uncomfortable. That’s all"
She lowered her eyes and placed her hands on her lower abdomen uneasily.
Hearing this, Christopher’s grew concerned and worried.
"What’s wrong with you? I’ll can take you to the hospital."
"No, it’s okay. I just feel a little upset in my stomach. I’ll be fine after resting for a while." She pretended to cover her stomach.
Seeing this, he hurried forward to hold her. "Then you should go lie down and take some a rest. I’ll go get you a glass of water."
He helped her onto the bed. Just as he was about to go downstairs to pour her some water, she stopped him.
"Don’t worry. I’ll be fine after lying down for a while. You needn’t bother yourself."
"Are you hungry? I’ll cook."
As he spoke, he turned around and hurried down the stairs.
Janice could only helplessly sigh as she stared at his departed silhouette.
She wasn’t comfortable with lying especially to him, but what should must she do?
While she was contemplating her dilemma, her phone suddenly rang. It was Benjamin.
She picked it and answered. "Janice, can I help you?"
Benjamin’s voice came from the other end of the phone.
Janice thought about what words to use.
"Oh, nothing. I just wanted to ask how you have been recently." Benjamin on the other side of the phone was stunned and said. "I... I’m fine. Don’t worry, what about you?"
"I’m fine, too. Are you ... really okay? We’re friends. If you need anything or if anything is bothering you, feel free to tell me."
Benjamin was silent for a moment before he said, "It’s fine. I am okay."
He sounded tired and didn’t seem fine at all. Even though Janice was suspicious of it, she did not insist on asking further since he has said he was fine.
However, she still had her doubts. After all, Lucy was a reporter, so her intuition could not be wrong.
However, why didn’t he admit it?
She couldn’t figure it out. Forget it. She would inquire about it when she had more time. She put away her phone and couldn’t stand staying in the room any longer.
After all, it’s no good lying to others and always pretending to be sick.
Therefore, she got up and went downstairs.
While she was downstairs, Christopher was busy in the kitchen with his sleeves rolled up. Janice did not walk in. She stood at the door and quietly watched him.
At this moment, she really wanted to walk up behind him and hug him, telling him that she was actually not sick, but that she couldn’t share the joy with him. She felt the tinge of guilt plaguing her now and again. However, she ended up restraining herself.
Comparing that with the guilt she already feels, she didn’t want all her efforts to be in vain.
"Didn’t I tell you to lie down because you are not feeling well? Why did you come down?"
As he busied himself, Christopher unintentionally turned his head and saw her standing at the door. He frowned and stepped forward.
Janice looked away.
"I’m much better now. Do you need my help?"
He said, "You’d better relax and wait."
He pushed her into the living room, gently sat her down on the sofa, and went back to the kitchen.
She helplessly shook her head. Recalling the stack of documents that she hadn’t finished reading, she stood up and walked towards the study.
However, when she arrived at the study, she found that the folder was missing. That was strange. She was very sure that she had kept it there that day, but how was it that it has just vanished without a trace? After rummaging through the study, she returned to the kitchen and asked.
"Did... did you see the folder that I left in the study?"
There were only the two of them in the house and he didn’t like others touching his stuff. Usually, the house help was prohibited from entering the study whenever she cleaned. Therefore, he was the only one to ask since it’s not her.
Hearing this, he paused for a moment. "You’re talking about the information of the dog case."
"You..."
She stared at him, completely bemused. How did he know its contents? He must have read it.
"It’s with me."
Christopher answered directly without wasting time or dabbling about..
"Don’t overthink it. I am the victim of the incident. I also want to know who is responsible for it, and the ones who were behind this."
Afraid that she might misunderstand her intentions, he explained.
