Chef in the Apocalypse

With practiced stealth, Jayce and Zane advanced through the forest. As they moved further down the path, Zane’s acute senses picked up on subtle movements ahead. He turned to Jayce and whispered, "Movement up ahead, about thirty meters away."

Jayce nodded in acknowledgment. "Circle around, but don’t get yourself discovered. I’ll follow closely behind."

Zane swiftly vanished into the underbrush, his lithe form melding into the shadows. Jayce, meanwhile, continued forward with utmost caution, sticking to the shadows and using his newfound skills of subterfuge.

Soon, he breached the edge of the forest, and the sight that greeted him was nothing short of astonishing. Before him, a massive figure, a tower of a man, stood his ground, raising a colossal shield to defend against a monstrous creature that seemed plucked from the darkest recesses of a nightmare.

The beast was monstrous, double the size of a grown man. Its leathery wings ended in razor-sharp claws, its beak was a formidable weapon adorned with savage teeth.

Yet it wasn’t the terrifying creature that had left Jayce momentarily stupefied. His wide-eyed gaze was fixed on the figure defending against the monster. The man was clean-shaven, his face hidden beneath a centurion’s helmet. He held a massive kite shield in his left hand and wielded a longsword in his right.

The words escaped Jayce’s lips, hardly more than a whisper, "L-Leader?"

Jayce’s heart pounded in his chest as he stared at the figure battling the monstrous creature. Despite looking younger and no longer sporting a wild beard, he could recognize the man easily. After all, he was a man he had respected and fought alongside for many years. The memories of those days flooded back, memories of camaraderie and survival.

The leader, whom Jayce had always admired for his unyielding spirit and tactical brilliance, now stood alone against this nightmarish foe. His movements were precise, and his defenses held strong, but the relentless assault of the creature was taking its toll.

Despite the chaos and danger, Jayce couldn’t help but feel a surge of hope. If his former leader was here, it meant that there were survivors from the city of Qinling, and perhaps there was a chance to rescue more.

Jayce’s initial shock transformed into determination. He knew he had to help, to stand by his leader’s side once again. But he also understood the gravity of the situation. This was no ordinary monster; it was something far more sinister.

Quietly, Jayce activated his dagger’s ability, "Master of Stealth" which turned him invisible for 10 seconds. He began to circle around the battlefield, placing himself behind the large winged monster, poised and ready to strike.

Now invisible, Jayce moved with preternatural grace, closing the gap between himself and the winged monster. His Ingredient Analysis skill, one of his most basic class skills, allowed him to discern the vital points of anything the system categorized as an ingredient.

The monster in front of him was indeed considered as such, and Jayce could see a spectral overlay indicating the best places to slice and butcher for the most devastating effect. He focused on the darkest point, where the creature’s heart was presumably located.

With a quick and precise thrust, he plunged the legendary dagger deep into the beast. A howl of pain tore through the air as the monster raised its head, agony etched across its monstrous features.

Just as the creature’s cry of suffering rent the air, an arrow shot from a hidden vantage point in front of it, striking the winged monster directly in its eye. The impact was fatal, and the once-terrifying beast crumpled to the ground, lifeless.

The man who had been fighting for his life, holding his shield with desperation, was now wide-eyed in astonishment. He surveyed the motionless creature before him, then turned his gaze to the figure that had seemingly appeared out of nowhere.

Tentatively, he lowered his shield, though his face still bore traces of anxiety. "Thank you, friend," he said breathlessly, gratitude lacing his words. "I hate to ask this so soon after you’ve saved me, but please, I beg of you, help me find my wife. I diverted the monster away from her while she hid in the shrubs somewhere."

He bowed his head, his voice filled with urgency and worry.

Jayce blanked out for a moment, seeing the face of someone who he owed his life to on many occasions. His memories seemed to replay in his mind. Memories of the stalwart Guardian who stood at the forefront of battle, holding the line while barking out accurate and efficient orders.

The lonely figure who had become Jayce’s mentor and like a second Father in a world that had been turned upside down. Jayce would go as far to say that without this man, he wouldn’t have even been a shadow of the person he was today.

Looking at the bowed head, the two images of the man seemed to overlap. A bearded fellow with a stoic expression, yet with eyes that belied a deep emotion of loss and pain within, a far cry from the younger and resolute man in front of him. Jayce’s eyes welled with tears, and his throat choked up with emotion, yet he managed to force them down.

He shook his head, composing himself. The man in front of him was not his Leader from his past life, he was his younger self therefore they did not know each other.

He held his hand out, in a greeting. "We’d be happy to help. I’m Jayce."

The large man lifted his head, a relieved look creeping onto his face. He grasped the hand in front of him and responded, "I’m Heathrow, but you can call me Heath." With that, he continued with a hint of anxiety "We need to find her quick, before more of those things come this way."

Jayce nodded and gestured to Zane to begin his search. It was likely that the astute scout would be able to locate the large man’s wife faster than him and Heath combined.
