Chef in the Apocalypse

Amber’s words hung in the air like a melody, a refrain that echoed within Jayce’s mind. "When this is all over..." he whispered to himself, his eyes taking on a distant glint. Those words had never truly crossed his mind before, at least not in such a tangible way. The concept of an ending to the Apocalypse felt like a far-off dream, a notion that was not meant to be entertained.

Before he had been sent back to the past, he had lived within this harsh world for a decade, surviving and adapting to its unforgiving landscape. The term "Apocalypse" itself carried a sense of permanence, a state of existence that was meant to be endured rather than overcome. In the early days, it was simply referred to as The New World, a way to normalize the shift in reality, as if to say, "This is how it is now." 𝐟𝗿𝐞𝚎𝚠𝐞𝚋𝕟𝐨𝚟𝐞𝕝.𝕔𝕠𝚖

But as Amber’s words settled within him, Jayce’s perspective began to shift. Could it be possible to undo what had been wrought by the Cataclysm? His mind raced through the various theories and possibilities that had formed since he became a Supporter, since he learned about Rubick and the intricate web of the World Quest. He, as the Number 1 Supporter, was in a unique position to explore the intricate cause-and-effect relationships that governed this world.

He pondered the potential for unraveling the threads of the Apocalypse, for restoring the world he had known before the veil of Cataclysm descended. The idea was still rooted in theory, a glimmer of hope that he held close to his heart, one that he wasn’t ready to share just yet.

With a gentle smile, Jayce glanced at Amber, her expression radiant with positivity. He nodded, his voice carrying a warmth that held more than just agreement. "You’re right, Amber. When this is all over, I’ll open up a restaurant"

Jayce watched as the moonlight bathed the cityscape in a soft glow, his mind a whirlwind of thoughts and scenarios revolving around the Apocalypse. The weight of his newfound insights, his role as a Supporter, and the potential for change pressed heavily on his shoulders. Yet, despite the gravity of the situation, he found solace in the quiet of the night.

He had bid the others goodnight earlier, volunteering to take the first watch claiming he wasn’t tired. And that was the truth; his mind was too active, too absorbed in the complexities of their world to surrender to sleep.

After ascending to the second floor, Jayce positioned himself in the half-destroyed room, its shattered wall offering an unobstructed view of the surrounding city. The moon hung luminous in the sky, casting a soft illumination over the streets below, while stars twinkled like distant beacons of hope.

Seated in quiet contemplation, Jayce drank in the sight before him, finding an odd sort of peace in the midst of chaos. A creak of the door broke his reverie, and he turned to see Lianna standing there. She asked if she could join him, explaining that she wasn’t tired yet. Jayce nodded, unable to suppress the flutter in his chest at her presence. She settled beside him, her closeness sending his heart into overdrive. He took in her profile, her hair catching the moonlight like a halo.

"It’s beautiful," Lianna murmured, her voice as soft as a sigh. Jayce nodded, his throat suddenly dry as he struggled to find words. "Very beautiful."

Suddenly, she turned her attention to him, her emerald eyes probing. "Is it true what you said?" she inquired gently, "You know, about being alone since middle school?" her curiosity was as clear as the moonlight. He hesitated, then nodded, feeling strangely exposed under her gaze.

Lianna’s expression wavered, and she lowered her gaze to the ground. Her fingers found their way onto his hand, a gentle touch that sent a jolt through Jayce’s veins. "I’m sorry that you had to go through that," she offered, her voice a soothing balm in the night.

Jayce’s heart raced at her touch, his breath hitching at the tenderness in her words. As he glanced at her, his eyes wide and surprised like a lost lamb, her laughter tinkled like a delicate melody. Her giggles were like a warm embrace, thawing the tension in the air. He stared, a portrait of bewilderment painted across his features.

With grace and mischief, Lianna leaned forward, planting a feather-light kiss upon his cheek. Jayce was rendered momentarily speechless, his skin tingling at the lingering sensation. As she rose to her feet, she met his gaze with a mischievous glint in her emerald eyes. "You’re not alone anymore, Leader," she declared softly before slipping away, leaving behind a stunned Jayce and the echo of her presence.

He reached up to his cheek and touched it, remembering the soft lips that had just caressed it and blushed deeply. All his deep thoughts about the Apocalypse were erased from his mind, leaving only Lianna’s beautiful figure and mirthful laughter.

However, in the next moment, a notification appeared on his screen.

Jayce raised his eyebrow in surprise, messaging through the system was not something that he was able to do in his past life, meaning this must be a supporter feature. If he remembered correctly, Rubick did mention something about the supporters being able to contact each other.

Without further ado, he opened the message and read it.

"What?" Jayce almost cried out in surprise. Were his boss kills broadcasted to the other supporters without his knowledge? As if in answer to his question, another notification appeared in front of him.

[Flamecaster #4 has sent you a message]

[Flamecaster #4: Dude, I can’t believe you’ve killed 2 bosses already. What drops did you get?]

[Cloud #97 has sent you a message]

[Cloud #97: Hey big bro! Do you want to trade some items?]

Jayce suddenly felt overwhelmed, seeing the sea of messages he had been sent. Thankfully he wasn’t forced to reply, merely closing the windows and ignoring them, after all he was meant to be on watch. He quickly searched for a way to turn off the chat notifications and went back to his guard duties.
