Skid. Skid.
Two pairs of boots scraped against broken concrete at the edge of the devastation. Byron and Zane had arrived—Byron’s face pale behind his Gold Tier wristband, Zane’s eyes wide as dinner plates as he surveyed the cratered street, the collapsed buildings, the lingering haze of residual energy that still shimmered in the air.
Mira stood between them, glasses catching the moonlight, expression unreadable.
"What the fuck happened here?" Byron’s voice cracked on the second word. "This looks like a Mana Heart cultivator went on a rampage."
Kael didn’t look at him.
"Where’s Sage?"
Mira adjusted her glasses. "She’s fine. Her bloodline’s healing factor kicked in about ten minutes ago. Second-degree burns were already closing when I left her. She’ll wake up within the hour."
Kael exhaled.
The tension in his shoulders loosened.
Byron stepped forward, mouth opening, indignation building—
Kael’s hand landed on his shoulder.
Byron froze.
Kael leaned close. His lips brushed Byron’s ear. His voice dropped to a whisper that only the two of them could hear.
"Imagine giving you—the group leader—partial credit for this mess. The rescue. The operation. All of it. How does that sound?"
He pulled back and gave Byron a wink.
Byron’s expression shifted through approximately seven emotions in two seconds—confusion, offense, calculation, greed, more calculation, satisfaction, and finally something that looked almost like enthusiasm.
He cleared his throat. A dry, hacking cough that served no purpose except to reset the moment.
"Alright!" Byron’s voice boomed across the ruins. "Let’s go get those motherfuckers and rescue those poor souls! No time to waste!"
He charged toward the warehouse.
Zane scrambled to follow, nearly tripping over his own feet in his haste to keep up with his group leader’s sudden burst of motivation.
Mira appeared at Kael’s side. Her glasses glinted.
"What did you tell him?"
Kael smiled.
"Just gave him a little push. That’s all."
Mira stared at him for a long moment. Then she shook her head slightly and walked after the others.
Kael followed.
The underground facility was quieter than before.
The teleportation array still pulsed at the far end of the cavern—red light rhythmic, steady, unchanged—but the cages lining the walls held fewer bodies than Kael remembered. The operatives who’d survived the initial assault were either dead or scattered.
What remained were the dregs.
Fifteen operatives. Maybe twenty. Huddled in defensive clusters near the array, weapons drawn, signatures burning with fear and desperation. Their cultivation ranged from Peak Core Formation to Foundation Establishment Rank 5—dangerous to normal students, but not to what walked into their prison tonight.
Byron didn’t hesitate.
"Kill them all!"
He charged. Fire erupted from his palms. Zane followed with a sword drawn, technique sloppy but enthusiasm high.
Mira hung back. Ice formed at her fingertips. Fire spiraled at her other hand.
Kael walked past her.
His attention wasn’t on the operatives.
The captured civilians were still in their cages. Two hundred, maybe two-fifty—men, women, children, huddled together in the dim light. Some unconscious. Some crying. Some simply staring at nothing with the empty eyes of people who’d stopped believing rescue would come.
But Kael noticed something else.
Some of them were cultivators.
His Essence Trace swept across the cages, painting signatures in his vision. Most were mundane—ordinary people with ordinary life forces. But interspersed among them were brighter glows. Mana Gathering Realm. Early Core Formation. Low-level cultivators who’d been scooped up along with everyone else.
Why? 𝓯𝓻𝒆𝙚𝒘𝓮𝙗𝓷𝒐𝓿𝙚𝒍.𝙘𝓸𝙢
The House of Crimson was trafficking people—that much was clear. But why take cultivators? Ordinary civilians could be sold, harvested, used for labor. Cultivators were harder to control, more dangerous, more valuable in specific markets but also more likely to cause problems.
Unless they wanted them specifically.
Kael filed the thought away and kept walking.
The sounds of battle echoed behind him—Byron’s flames roaring, Zane’s blade clashing, the wet thump of bodies hitting stone. Mira had joined the fight now, ice and fire dancing in lethal harmony.
Six of them managed to surrender.
Kael didn’t stop for them.
The teleportation array pulsed.
The formation was massive—twenty meters across, runes carved into the stone floor in patterns that hurt to look at directly. Red light spiraled through the channels, concentrated at the center where—
A small black stone. Maybe the size of a fist.
It sat at the exact center of the array like a heart pumping blood through the entire structure. The red light didn’t illuminate it—flowed around it, as if the stone was drinking in everything that came near and leaving nothing behind.
Kael’s breath caught.
Pull.
It felt as if the stone was calling to him.
He stepped onto the array.
The red light rippled.
Byron’s voice echoed from somewhere behind him. "Kael! What are you—"
Kael didn’t hear the rest.
He was already moving. Each footfall brought him closer to the center, closer to the stone, closer to whatever was waiting inside that impossible darkness.
The runes beneath his feet pulsed faster.
The air grew thick.
His Essence Trace screamed.
His hand reached out.
Fingers brushed the surface.
Cold.
The stone hummed.

Kael’s hand closed around the stone.
It fit perfectly in his palm—like it had been made for him, like it had been waiting for him, like it had always belonged there.
The red light of the teleportation array flickered once.
Then died.
The channels went dark. The runes stopped pulsing. Whatever power had been flowing through the formation simply ceased, leaving nothing but cold stone and the black crystal in Kael’s hand.
He stood there.
Alone in the center of a dead array.
Holding something that shouldn’t exist.
The System pulsed.
VOID CRYSTAL ACQUIRED
This item is critical.
It can be used for System evolution.
Kael stared at the notification.
"Evolution?" he whispered.
Behind him, the sounds of battle had stopped. The remaining operatives were restrained or dead. The civilians were being freed from their cages. Byron was shouting orders that nobody was listening to.
But Kael stood frozen.
System evolution.
The Darkness System—his constant companion, his hidden edge, the thing that had saved his life more times than he could count—had an evolution path.
And he was holding the key to it.
His fingers tightened around the Void Crystal.
Cold seeped into his bones.
Kael smiled.
"What else are you hiding?" he murmured.
The System didn’t answer.
