- Chapter 1: First Kill
The first week was a parade of humiliations designed to weed out the weak.
Iron Tier students were subjected to a schedule that would have broken most Core Formation cultivators: dawn physical conditioning, morning theory classes, afternoon combat drills, evening survival training, and night meditation. No rest days. No breaks. No mercy.
The instructors treated Iron Tier like a disease they were trying to cure.
Kael found it amusing.
DAY THREE — COMBAT DRILL
"Pairs! Find a partner and try not to kill each other!"
The instructor was a werewolf — massive, scarred, with a voice that could be heard from three buildings away. He stood at the center of the training yard, watching Iron Tier students scramble for partners with the bored contempt of someone who’d seen a thousand weaklings fail.
Kira Storm appeared beside Kael before he could move.
"Partner."
"Not asking?"
"No." Her yellow eyes gleamed. "I told you I wanted to see what makes you tick. Here’s my chance."
Kael looked at her.
Core Formation Rank 7. Lightning Manipulation. Fast, aggressive, poor defense based on his analysis of her during the few spars she had.
"Fine."
They squared off in the sparring circle — a thirty-meter ring carved into the training yard stone, lined with basic ward arrays that prevented lethal damage.
"Rules?" Kira asked.
"No rules."
Her eyes lit up.
She moved.
Fast. Very fast. Lightning crackled around her fists as she closed the distance, a straight punch aimed at his throat — simple, direct, designed to end fights before they started.
Kael sidestepped.
Kira’s eyes narrowed.
She threw a combination — jab, cross, uppercut, spinning backkick. All lightning-enhanced. All brutal. Each strike would have broken bones if it connected.
Too bad none of them connected.
Kael moved like smoke. His body shifted around her attacks with minimal movement, maximum efficiency.
The watching students started murmuring.
"Who is that guy?"
"He’s not even fighting back."
"Is he scared?"
Kira grew frustrated.
Her attacks came faster. Harder. Lightning arced off her body in wild bursts that scorched the ground around them. She was burning through her mana reserves — reckless, aggressive, exactly what the System had predicted.
"Stand still!" she snarled.
"Why?"
She threw a desperate haymaker.
Kael caught her fist with gravity. A localized field that froze her arm in mid-swing, locking every muscle in place. She strained against it, lightning flaring, teeth bared.
Nothing moved.
He released her and stepped back.
The murmur from the crowd grew louder.
Kira stared at him. Her yellow eyes were wide.
"You’re hiding something," she said quietly.
"Everyone hides something." Kael replied with a smile.
He walked away.
Kira watched him go.
Her hands were shaking from excitement.
DAY FIVE — SURVIVAL TRAINING
The forest outside the city was alive in ways the Vorn estates had never been.
Trees with bark like iron. Vines that moved when you weren’t looking. Insects the size of fists that glowed with bioluminescence. The mana density here was even higher than in the city — thick enough to taste, heavy enough to feel.
Iron Tier students were dropped in pairs and told to survive for twenty-four hours.
Kael was paired with a goblin-like creature named Glyx who had six eyes and an unfortunate habit of saying exactly what he was thinking.
"You’re weak," Glyx announced as they trudged through the undergrowth. "Small. No visible weapons. Orange talent. You’re going to die first."
"Probably."
"Good. That means the predators will eat you and leave me alone."
"Your optimism is refreshing."
Something moved in the trees.
Kael stopped.
Glyx stopped.
"What—"
"Quiet."
Kael’s Enhanced Mana Sight — limited by the Concealment Pendant but still functional — picked up a signature ahead. Large. Dense. Moving in a pattern that suggested stalking, not wandering.
"A beast," he murmured. "Rank B equivalent. It’s circling us."
Glyx’s six eyes went wide. "Rank B? We’re dead. We’re so dead. I’m too young to die—"
"Stop talking."
"But—"
"Stop."
Kael calculated.
Rank B beast were foundation Establishment equivalent. He could handle it — his Transcendent core gave him the mana capacity of a Rank 5 foundation Establishment cultivator at minimum, and his combat versatility made up for any raw power gap.
But he was supposed to be Rank 7 with a Standard core.
If he fought the beast at full strength, he’d expose himself.
If he didn’t fight, Glyx would die.
Kael hated having to make choices.
"Get behind that tree," he said. "Stay there until I tell you to move."
"What are you going to do?"
"Something stupid."
The beast attacked.
It exploded from the undergrowth — a massive feline predator with crystalline fur and teeth like daggers. It moved fast, faster than a normal Rank B beast should, its mana-enhanced muscles propelling it toward Glyx with killing intent.
Kael intercepted it with precision.
Gravity Step carried him into the beast’s path. His hand came up — an open palm pressed against the creature’s chest — and he released a precisely calculated gravity pulse.
The beast’s momentum shifted. Instead of hitting Glyx, it sailed past, crashing into a tree hard enough to splinter the trunk. It recovered fast already snarling — but Kael was already moving.
He led it on a chase through the trees, over streams, around boulders. The beast followed, furious, getting faster and closing the gap.
Kael let it get close.
Then he led it into a ravine.
The beast jumped.
Kael dropped.
Gravity reversed — not his, the planet’s. He fell straight down while the beast sailed over him, momentum carrying it into the ravine wall. The impact was brutal — bones cracked, crystalline fur shattered, the beast crumpled in a heap at the bottom.
But that wasn’t enough to kill it.
But it couldn’t move either.
Kael landed beside it, barely winded.
"Rank B beast," he said aloud, addressing no one. "Taken down by a Rank 7 cultivator with a Standard core. What a perfect cover for this."
He looked up at the tree line where Glyx was peeking out.
"You can come down now."
Glyx didn’t move.
"I said—"
"How?" Glyx’s voice was trembling. "How did you do that?"
"Gravity manipulation is versatile."
Kael started walking back toward the drop point.
"Glyx."
"Y-yes?"
"If anyone asks, the beast got stuck in a rockslide and I finished it off while it was trapped. Understand?"
Glyx stared at him.
"...Yes."
"Good."
Kael disappeared into the forest.
Behind him, the beast groaned.
Glyx ran after him, six eyes darting in every direction, mind racing with questions he knew better than to ask.
DAY SEVEN — EVENING — COMMON ROOM
The ranking tournament was one week away.
Kael sat in his usual corner, watching the common room dynamics with detached interest. Hierarchies had already formed — not formal ones, but the unspoken kind that emerged whenever desperate people were forced together.
Kira Storm held court at the center. She’d beaten six Iron Tier students in sparring matches over the past week, all without taking significant damage. Her reputation had skyrocketed. People avoided her chair. People avoided her.
Except tonight.
A group of Bronze Tier students had wandered into Iron Territory.
Three of them. Human. Well-dressed. The kind of casual arrogance that came from knowing you were better than everyone in the room and wanting them to know it too.
"Is this the Iron common room?" The lead one — a tall boy with slicked-back hair and a smile that belonged on a used vehicle — surveyed the space with open contempt. "It’s smaller than I expected. And smellier."
Kira didn’t look up from the knife she was cleaning.
"Bronze Tier isn’t supposed to be here," she said flatly.
"We’re visiting." The boy dropped into a chair near her. "Heard there’s a decent fighter in Iron. Wanted to see for myself."
"You’re looking at her."
"Hmm." He leaned back, examining his nails. "Rank 7 core. Green talent. Lightning Manipulation. You’ve beaten... who? Other Iron Tier students? Children? People who’d lose to a determined house cat?"
Kira’s grip on her knife tightened.
"My name’s Percival Smith. Bronze Tier. Core Formation Rank 8. Flawless Core." He smiled. "I’m here to remind you of your place."
"Your place is in Bronze Territory," Kira said. "Which is that way." She pointed.
"See, that’s the thing about hierarchies." Percival stood. "They only work if the people below accept them. And Iron Tier has been getting... ideas. Thinking you’re better than you are. Someone needs to correct that."
His two friends moved to flank Kira.
The common room went silent.
"Want me to show you the gap between Bronze and Iron?" Percival’s hand crackled with earth mana. "It’s wider than you think."
Kira stood.
Lightning wreathed her fists.
"Try it."
Percival grinned.
His fist came up—
And stopped.
A hand had caught it from behind.
Kael.
Nobody had seen him move. One second he was in his corner. The next he was behind Percival, fingers wrapped around the Bronze Tier student’s wrist, silver eyes gleaming.
"Hello," Kael said pleasantly. "I couldn’t help but notice you were about to make a mistake."
Percival tried to pull free.
He couldn’t.
"What the—"
"See, here’s the thing about hierarchies." Kael’s grip tightened. Percival’s face went white. "They only work if the people above deserve to be there. And you—"
He squeezed.
Something in Percival’s wrist crunched.
"—don’t."
Percival screamed.
His two friends lunged.
Kael didn’t turn.
Gravity swept outward — a gentle push that sent both of them flying backward, crashing into tables, scattering Iron Tier students like bowling pins.
The common room erupted into chaos.
Kael released Percival’s broken wrist and stepped back.
The Bronze Tier student cradled his arm, face twisted in pain, eyes wide with shock and fear.
"What are you?" he gasped.
"Nobody important." Kael smiled mischievously. "Just an Iron Tier student with a Standard core."
He turned and walked back to his corner.
The room stared.
Kira stared.
Percival’s friends helped him up and carried him out, casting terrified glances over their shoulders.
Kira sat back down.
She looked at Kael.
He looked at her.
"You broke his wrist," she said.
"He’ll heal."
"You humiliated a Bronze Tier student."
"He humiliated himself."
"The Bronze Tier will retaliate."
"Probably."
"You don’t care."
"No."
Kira was quiet for a long moment.
She stood and walked to her corner.
The common room slowly returned to normal.
Whispers followed Kael like shadows.
Who is he?
What is he?
Kael leaned back in his chair and closed his eyes.
One week until the tournament.
The whole academy would be watching.
He couldn’t wait.
