- Chapter 1: First Kill
Blade intent and lightning crashed through the temple chamber.
Victor moved like water flowing downhill—no resistance, no hesitation, every step carrying him exactly where he needed to be. His blade sang through the air, trailing arcs of condensed killing intent that made the pipes shudder and the cocoon pulse faster.
Josh met him blow for blow.
Lightning wreathed the silver-haired man’s fists, crackling along his arms, dancing across his shoulders. Every punch carried enough voltage to kill a Mana Heart cultivator outright. Every block sent sparks showering across the chamber floor.
But Josh wasn’t trying to win.
He was trying to protect.
Every time Victor’s blade swung toward the cocoon, Josh intercepted. Every time an errant slash sent energy rippling toward the pulsing membrane, Josh absorbed the impact with his own body. He was a wall—mobile, adaptive, utterly committed to keeping anything from touching the thing growing inside that shell.
"You’re predictable." Victor’s voice cut through the clash of steel and lightning. "You keep positioning yourself between me and that thing. It makes you vulnerable."
Josh smiled. Blood dripped from a cut above his eye. "Predictability only matters if you can exploit it."
Their blades met again.
CLANG!
The shockwave rippled outward, cracking the stone floor, sending smaller pipes bursting from their connections. Vitality fluid—thick, reddish fluid sprayed across the chamber from the ruptured connections.
Josh used the spray as cover.
He feinted left, then dashed right, lightning gathering around his fist. Not toward Victor—toward the space behind him. Toward Lyra, who was circling the chamber, looking for an opening.
Victor intercepted.
"Stop."
His blade moved faster than thought, guided by decades of combat experience and Blade Intent that could cut through concepts as easily as flesh. The slash caught Josh’s lightning fist mid-swing, deflecting it upward, the energy dissipating harmlessly into the ceiling.
Josh recovered instantly. Another punch. Another deflection. Another exchange that sent both fighters skidding backward across the chamber floor.
This was the rhythm they’d established. Attack, counter, reset. Neither gaining ground. Neither losing it. A stalemate born of mutual skill and mutual commitment to different objectives.
Josh wanted to protect the cocoon.
Victor wanted to destroy it.
Simple goals. Complex execution.
Lyra watched from the chamber’s edge.
Her eyes tracked every movement, every shift in positioning, every opening that appeared and closed in the space between heartbeats. She was waiting. Patience wasn’t her preferred tactic—she was a Grim Reaper, not a strategist—but even she understood that charging into a two-Spirit-Soul-realm-cultivator fight without an opening was suicide.
The opening came.
Josh overextended slightly—a punch that carried too much commitment, his center of gravity shifting forward for just a moment. Victor capitalized immediately, his blade flashing in a horizontal slash that would have opened Josh from hip to shoulder.
Josh blocked.
But the block put his back to Lyra.
She moved as she teleported surprising Josh that she could use space powers. One moment at the chamber’s edge. The next directly in front of the cocoon, fist cocked back, mana erupting from her body like a volcano.
Josh’s head snapped toward her.
"Stop him!"
The shout was directed at one of the Mana Heart Rank 9 cultivators still fighting Grey—a man with a massive war hammer who had been keeping the three-star guardian busy. The man hesitated, caught between his current engagement and an order from someone significantly above his pay grade.
He chose the order.
The war hammer came down toward Victor’s head.
Victor didn’t dodge.
He didn’t need to.
His blade moved—a single horizontal slash that carried every ounce of Blade Intent he could muster. The attack didn’t just cut the Rank 9 cultivator. It erased him. The man’s body split clean in half at the waist, both sections flying in opposite directions, blood painting the chamber walls in arterial spray.
The war hammer clattered to the ground, riderless.
Josh used the distraction.
Lightning punch—reinforced, concentrated, aimed directly at Lyra’s stomach. The attack crossed the distance between them in a heartbeat, crackling with enough energy to vaporize stone.
Lyra tried to dodge.
She wasn’t fast enough.
BOOM!
The punch connected. Lightning exploded through her torso, blasting her backward across the chamber. She hit the ground hard, skidding across stone, leaving a trail of scorched earth behind her. Pain flared through her body—her absorption ability had taken the edge off, but a direct hit from a Spirit Soul realm cultivator wasn’t something you walked away from untouched.
She gritted her teeth and started to rise.
Victor appeared above Josh.
His blade came down—a vertical slash powered by gravity and intent and the particular fury of a man who had just watched someone hurt his comrade. The attack screamed through the air, leaving a visible line of condensed killing intent in its wake.
Josh raised a lightning barrier.
It wasn’t enough.
The blade cut through the barrier like paper as the slash reached Josh’s chest, carving a diagonal line from his left shoulder to his right hip as blood sprayed. His bone was visible through the wound.
Josh smiled.
"Good hit."
He raised his hand.
Lightning bolt.
The attack caught Victor mid-recovery, sending him flying across the chamber. He crashed through a cluster of pipes, vitality fluid spraying across his body, and hit the far wall with enough force to crack the stone.
Both Spirit Soul realm cultivators were down. Temporarily.
Lyra used the moment.
She pushed herself upright, ignored the pain screaming through her torso and teleported.
Josh was still recovering. Victor was still recovering. Grey was still fighting the remaining cultivators. No one could stop her—
Her fist came down.
Mana reinforced the strike—every drop she could spare, compressed into a single point of devastating force. The cocoon’s membrane stretched toward her fist, struggling to hold, cracking under the pressure—
A lightning arc hit her shoulder.
Josh. Already moving. The lightning burned through her clothes, charred her skin, sent agony screaming through her nervous system.
Her body absorbed it.
The pain diminished as her fist kept descending. And her fist kept moving.
The membrane cracked.
LYRA HIT THE GROUND.
Not from her own momentum. From something else—a force that erupted from the cocoon the moment her fist touched it. A pressure. A presence. Something ancient and vast and utterly alien that pushed against her like the weight of an ocean.
She crashed into the temple wall.
Stone cracked behind her. Blood filled her mouth. Her vision swam. Every bone in her body felt like it had been simultaneously compressed and stretched, twisted into shapes that human anatomy wasn’t meant to achieve.
Through the pain, through the blur, she saw it.
Two hands tore through the cocoon from inside.
The membrane ripped apart like wet paper, vitality fluid spraying in every directions, the pipes connected to it bursting one by one in a chain reaction that sent the chamber into chaos.
And out of the cocoon—
A figure emerged.
Three meters tall. Two horns curving backward from its skull, black as midnight, shot through with veins of deep red. Red eyes that burned like coal.
Apart from those features, it looked human.
Attractive, even. Sharp features. Skin that seemed to glow with inner light, pale as moonlight, smooth as porcelain. If you ignored the horns and the eyes and the aura of absolute wrongness that radiated from every inch of its form, you might have called it beautiful.
The demonic aura pressed outward.
Grey felt it from across the chamber—the remaining cultivators he was fighting felt it too. They froze, their attacks stopping mid-swing, their eyes going wide with primal terror. Even the Mana Heart Rank 9 Peak cultivator, battered and bleeding from his fight with Grey, took an involuntary step backward.
The figure opened its eyes fully.
Red light washed across the chamber.
Lyra lay against the cracked wall, broken and bleeding, her Peak Mana Heart Rank 9 cultivation base feeling like nothing in the presence of this thing. Her absorption ability was useless against demonic energy. Her combat experience was irrelevant against something that existed outside the normal power hierarchy.
She’d faced Spirit Soul realm cultivators before. She’d won against some, lost against others. She understood the scale of power in this universe.
This wasn’t on that scale.
This was something else entirely.
Her expression turned pale.
Not from fear—Lyra didn’t feel fear anymore, hadn’t felt it in decades.
From understanding.
"We are dead," she murmured.
The demon’s head turned toward her as It smiled.
