Five months passed like water through fingers.
The Guardian base on Solaria looked nothing like the one on Morir.
Where Morir’s facility had been functional—obsidian floors, practical lighting, military efficiency—Solaria’s was elegant. Crystal walls that refracted light into prismatic patterns. Gardens growing in suspended alcoves, their plants cultivated from a dozen different worlds. Architecture that suggested wealth rather than warfare, comfort rather than combat readiness.
George Gibson stood in the central command room, hands clasped behind his back, staring at a holographic display that covered an entire wall. Mission logs. Operative reports. Resource allocations. The administrative machinery of an organization that spanned galaxies.
His cultivation base pressed against the room like a physical weight.
Peak Mana Heart Rank 9. The signature was controlled—George always kept his power leashed—but in a room designed for privacy, some of that discipline relaxed. The air felt heavier. The light seemed to bend slightly around his form. He’d gotten stronger since Morir.
Grey stood beside him, arms crossed, with his face as unreadable as ever. Early Mana Heart Rank 9.
Neither of them noticed the door open.
Lyra entered without announcement, green mask in place, dark hair cascading past her shoulders, moving with the particular grace that came from absolute confidence in one’s own abilities. She wore different clothes today—deep green robes that flowed like water, silver embroidery catching the crystal light.
Grey’s head turned first.
"My lady." He inclined his head slightly. "It seems the master has removed the seal on your cultivation base."
George’s eyebrows rose. His senses reached out, brushing against Lyra’s signature—
And stopped.
Mana Heart Rank 7.
On Athelas, Lyra’s cultivation had read as Rank 3. Deliberately suppressed. A seal so thorough that even Kael’s Essence Trace had been fooled, registering her as merely above average rather than genuinely dangerous.
The seal was gone now.
Lyra’s nose wrinkled. An annoyed pout tugged at her lips—a surprisingly youthful expression on someone who could punch through buildings.
"Don’t mind the old man." She waved a dismissive hand. "He gets ideas sometimes. Thinks he knows what’s best for everyone. Quite annoying, don’t you think?."
George chose not to comment on calling one of the most powerful beings in the Guardian organization "annoying." Self-preservation had its uses.
"I thought you invited Kael last month to come take another mission," Lyra continued, moving toward the holographic display with casual ownership of the space. "Why am I only seeing Yenna and Cassian in the log?"
George’s expression tightened.
A muscle twitched beneath his eye.
"That bastard kid said he’s not coming unless he’s going with you."
Silence.
Lyra turned.
For a moment, her mask made it impossible to read her expression. Then her shoulders shook—and a chuckle escaped her mouth.
"That little cunt."
George sighed. "My sentiments exactly."
Lyra shook her head slowly, the motion carrying something that might have been amusement or might have been resignation. "Tell him he can go with me on a mission. Call him later."
George’s eyebrows rose again. "Just like that?"
"He’s been holding out for two months. Refusing missions. Ignoring summons. Making my operatives look incompetent because they can’t convince him to—"
"George." Lyra’s voice softened. Just slightly. "Call him."
George exhaled slowly through his nose.
"Thank you, miss."
Lyra waved again and turned toward the exit. She’d gotten what she wanted. The conversation was over as far as she was concerned.
"One more thing." George’s voice stopped her at the doorway. "He asked to bring two people of his choice."
Lyra paused.
"Kael is smart." Her voice carried a faint smile even though her mask hid it. "He knows who to trust."
A pause.
"That kid is more manipulative and crueler than he looks."
She walked away.
The door closed behind her with a soft click.
George stared at the empty doorway for a long moment. Then he turned to Grey.
Grey was laughing.
Not loudly—just a quiet chuckle that shook his shoulders, the most emotion Kael had ever seen from the ordinarily expressionless man.
"Shut up," George said.
Grey didn’t shut up.
George pulled out his Guardian Communication Token and activated it with more force than necessary. The device chimed, connecting to Kael’s registered token across the void between planets.
He typed the message:
Mission available. Lady Lyra will be in attendance. You may bring two companions of your choice. Report to Solaria Guardian Base within 48 hours. This is not a request.
Send.
He waited.
Three seconds.
Four.
Five—
The response came.
I will be there.
George stared at the message. 𝒇𝒓𝙚𝒆𝔀𝓮𝓫𝒏𝓸𝙫𝓮𝓵.𝓬𝙤𝙢
Then at Grey.
Then at the message again.
"I’m going to torture that little—"
Elsewhere.
Planet Orion.
Heaven’s Gate Academy.
Kael sneezed.
"Ah—ah—ACHOO!"
"Is somebody talking bad about me? What did I do this time?"
He rolled his shoulders, feeling the familiar weight of his enhanced body—Void Body Refinement Tier 3 Peak now, bones dense enough to crack stone, muscles fibered for explosive power, skin tough enough to turn ordinary blades. The two Body Tempering Elixirs from Morir had pushed him to Late. The past five months of dedicated training had pushed him to Peak.
And his cultivation—
Foundation Establishment Rank 8.
He’d broken through a month ago using one of his remaining Mana Condensation Pills during a late-night session. The breakthrough had been smooth—Transcendent Core doing what Transcendent Cores did, processing the excess energy with ridiculous efficiency, expanding his reserves without the strain that normal cultivators experienced.
Kael walked to his window and looking out at the arena.
A match was in progress.
Aria moved like liquid shadow. Darkness pooled around her feet with each step, tendrils of black energy trailing behind her, while simultaneous pulses of golden light radiated from her palms. The duality was mesmerizing to watch. Shadow and Light. Darkness and Illumination.
Her opponent was Gareth Gisborne.
The fire-user who’d lost to Kael five months ago had climbed back to Rank 14 through consistent victories. He was good—better than most gave him credit for. His Destroyer Flames technique had improved significantly, the beam now narrower and more concentrated, capable of piercing defenses that would have stopped the original version.
None of it mattered.
Aria ducked under a fire blast, shadows wrapping around her body like a cloak, and emerged behind Gareth before he could track her movement. Light gathered in her palm—a compressed sphere of golden energy—and she drove it into his back.
Gareth stumbled forward. Aria was already there, shadow blade forming in her grip, pressing against his throat.
"I forfeit!" Gareth’s voice cracked.
The referee raised his hand. "Aria Nightshade defeats Gareth Gisborne! Moving to Rank 15!"
The crowd cheered.
Kael smiled.
Five months. That was all it had taken.
Aria had climbed from Rank 96 to Rank 15 in five months. The guild training had honed her into something sharp and dangerous, and the academy’s challenge system had given her a platform to prove it.
She was Gold class now. She climbed into the gold class two months ago. And her cultivation base—
Now sat at Foundation Establishment Rank 9 Peak.
Ready to break through to Mana Heart.
Kael’s smile widened.
His little shadow had grown fangs.
