The Darkness System: Rise of the Broken Sovereign

The backlash hit Rue like a physical blow. She staggered, clutching her head, blood pouring from her nose, her golden eyes going wide with shock and pain.

The man’s two remaining hands crashed down toward Kael.

A flash of light.

Aria moved.

Her dark blade swept once—clean and merciless. The man’s head left his shoulders with a wet crunch, spinning through the air, trailing blood in a graceful arc.

It hit the ground and rolled twice before coming to rest against a chunk of rubble.

His body collapsed as silence fell over the battlefield.

Then exhaustion hit them all.

They breathed hard. The fight had taken everything they had. Every reserve depleted with every muscle screaming.

Kael dropped to his knees.

Blood poured from his mouth as his vision blurred at the edges, the world becoming indistinct shapes and smears of color. The fiend form flickered violently around him, the soul damage reaching critical levels. The darkness was eating itself, consuming his essence, and he could feel the slumber waiting just beyond the edge of consciousness.

The Lightning Blade dissolved from his hand returning to raw mana as the flow state shattered.

His body swayed.

He needed sleep. Now. Immediately. The soul damage wouldn’t repair itself while he was awake.

He forced his eyes to stay open. Just a little longer. Just long enough to see the girls were safe.

Aria was standing over him, her crimson kimono torn and stained, golden light flickering weakly around her hands as she tried to figure out how to help. Rue was on her knees beside him, tails limp, face pale from backlash damage, tears mixing with the blood still dripping from her nose.

Silas stood apart, silver-white hair matted with blood and dust, her remaining beasts dissolving around her, her expression cold.

Kael opened his mouth to say something—reassuring, probably, or sarcastic, something that would let them know he was still himself beneath the blood and the pain and the fading consciousness.

Nothing came out.

The world went black as Rue and Aria shouted, "KAEL".

Inside the temple, the situation had deteriorated beyond recovery.

Victor hung nailed to the wall with demon’s dark energy solidified around his limbs like chains, pinning him in place. His blade lay broken on the ground ten meters away. Blood poured from a dozen wounds across his body. His eyes were open but unfocused, struggling to stay conscious.

Lyra lay on the floor bleeding with vision blurring. The absorption ability that made her so dangerous had saved her life against Josh’s lightning, but the demon’s dark energy had done something her absorption couldn’t process—corrupting the energy it touched, making it poison rather than power. The wound where the demon had sent her flying was blackened, the flesh around it dying slowly despite her attempts to heal it.

She forced the words through gritted teeth.

"Grey."

The demon stood over him.

Spirit Soul Realm Rank 5 standing at a height of three meters with its two black horns curving backward from its skull, red eyes burning with ancient malice. Humanoid shape—apart from the horns, it could almost pass for an attractive man.

In its hand was Grey’s severed head dangled from the demon’s hand. Blood dripped from the ragged neck. The body lay crumpled nearby, already starting to cool.

The demon bore only a single wound on his chest—a cut from Victor’s blade, deep enough to have been fatal to a normal cultivator. But the wound was already healing as his flesh knitted with the bones reforming. The regeneration of a creature that had consumed hundreds of thousands of lives to fuel its awakening.

"You guys are really good." The demon’s voice was smooth and almost sounded pleasant. "For entertaining me, I will spare your lives."

He tossed Grey’s head aside. It hit the ground with a wet thud, rolling once before settling.

"Except this one wasn’t so lucky."

Lyra forced herself upright.

Pain screamed through her body. Black veins spread from the corrupted wound on her back, her healing ability fighting a losing battle against something it couldn’t process. Blood dripped from her lips. Her vision was darkening at the edges.

But her eyes found the demon.

"I will never forgive you, demon." Her voice was ragged and pained. The voice of someone who had lost something irreplaceable. "I will hunt you down."

The demon laughed.

"Please do." His red eyes sparkled with anticipation and delight. "Nothing like a beautiful lady chasing me, right? It will be quite fun that if you can manage to entertain me past your current self."

He pointed toward the heavily injured Josh.

"You, come here."

"Sir?"

"Don’t be so tense." The demon’s smile widened. "You can call me Draxos."

"Yes sir, Draxos."

Dark reddish wings erupted from his back. They were made of something that looked like solidified smoke, veined with veins of darker red, pulsing with a heartbeat that didn’t match any living creature.

Draxos shot out of the temple.

Josh was clutched under his arm. The demon moved through the crimson sky with the casual grace of something that had been sleeping for millennia and was finally, finally awake.

Outside, he paused.

Below him, scattered across the ruined battlefield, were four figures. An injured boy on his knees, barely conscious. Three exhausted girls struggling to stay upright. The boy’s black kimono was soaked with blood.

Draxos frowned.

His red eyes found Kael specifically.

Something about the boy’s face sent a chill down his spine. It was familiar. Uncomfortably familiar. Like seeing a ghost from a dream he couldn’t quite remember.

He couldn’t place it.

He brushed it off.

Kael looked up.

His vision was swimming. The world was shapes and colors and pain. But through the blur, he saw the demon hovering above them. The wings. The horns. The red eyes.

Something stirred in the back of his mind. Something old. Something that didn’t belong to him.

"Asura Demon..." he murmured.

Sharp pain lanced through his skull.

His eyes rolled back. The world went white. His body swayed.

He fainted.
