Kael was on the roof when Aria’s shadow signal pulsed against his consciousness with three short bursts.
He dropped from the roof.
Five figures waited in the alley beside the Iron Tier dormitory wearing bronze Tier uniforms. Percival’s friends plus two new faces. They were all at the Core Formation Rank 8 or above with weapons that hummed with enchantment.
"You broke our friend’s wrist," the lead one said. A woman with cropped red hair and earth magic rolling between her palms. "That’s a debt with intend to collect."
Kael stopped at the alley entrance.
"Five against one. You’re braver than Percival. I give you that."
"Percival couldn’t fight. He’s a politician’s son. We’re not." Red Hair cracked her knuckles. "Iron Tier doesn’t have wards. Nobody’s watching. By the time anyone finds you, you’ll be in the medical wing for a month."
"That’s a lot of confidence for people about to make a mistake."
"Kill him."
They moved together — coordinated and practiced, obviously done this before. Red Hair attacked from the front with a stone fist. A blade-user flanked left. Two more came from the right with binding chains. The fifth hung back, hands glowing with healing magic — backup to patch them up if anything went wrong.
It went wrong immediately.
Kael didn’t dodge the stone fist.
He punched it.
His fist met hers. Earth mana against Void-refined bone. The impact created a shockwave that cracked the alley walls. Red Hair’s arm snapped backward.
She screamed.
The blade-user lunged. Kael caught the sword between two fingers, twisted, and shoved the pommel into the attacker’s face. Teeth scattered like dice.
The chain-users threw their bindings. Gravity wrapped around the chains and redirected them back. The users caught their own weapons and stared in disbelief.
The healer turned to run.
Shadow Step.
Kael appeared in front of her.
"Going somewhere?"
She raised her hands. "Please—"
He grabbed her collar and walked her back to the alley where her friends were writhing on the ground.
"Listen carefully." His voice was calm. Almost sounding friendly. "I’m going to release you. You’re going to walk back to your Bronze Tier dormitory. You’re going to tell everyone what happened here. And you’re going to understand that the next person who comes for me doesn’t get to walk away."
He let go and she didn’t even waste a single second before she ran.
Kael looked at the four groaning Bronze Tier students.
"Medical wing is that way." He pointed. "Tell them you fell."
He walked back inside.
Aria materialized from the shadows.
"You could have killed them."
"Waste of my effort. I wouldn’t want the Vorn family on my case already."
MORNING — ASSEMBLY HALL
The entire Iron Tier gathered in the assembly hall — a cramped, windowless room that smelled like sweat and anxiety. An instructor stood at the front: a vampire with silver hair and a smile that showed too many fangs. 𝐟𝐫𝕖𝗲𝘄𝚎𝗯𝕟𝐨𝕧𝐞𝚕.𝕔𝕠𝐦
"Tournament results," she announced without preamble. "Promotions and demotions will be announced. Listen carefully."
A holographic board flickered to life.
IRON TIER — PROMOTIONS (Iron → Rust)
Kira Storm — Rank 7, Green Talent — Tournament Champion
Brenna Blackwell — Rank 7, Green Talent — Tournament Runner-Up
Dex Varn — Rank 6, Green Talent — Quarterfinalist
Lira Chen — Rank 7, Orange Talent — Quarterfinalist
Kael Vorn — Rank 7, Orange Talent — Special Promotion
Murmuring erupted.
"Special promotion?" someone shouted. "He forfeited the finals!"
"The administration reviewed all match footage," the vampire said calmly. "Vorn’s performance in rounds one through four demonstrated ability inconsistent with his registered cultivation base. His forfeit of the final match is noted but does not negate his earlier dominance. Promotion stands."
Kira’s head snapped toward Kael.
He shrugged.
IRON TIER — DEMOTIONS (None)
"Iron is the lowest tier," the vampire continued. "There is nowhere to demote to. However, three students have been expelled for academic failure. Their names are not worth mentioning."
RUST TIER — PROMOTIONS (Rust → Bronze)
Five names Kael didn’t recognize.
RUST TIER — DEMOTIONS (Rust → Iron)
Five names Kael didn’t recognize.
BRONZE TIER — PROMOTIONS (Bronze → Silver)
Cassian Vale — Rank 8, Purple Talent
The hall went silent.
"Purple talent," someone whispered. "He’s Purple."
"Of course he’s Purple. The Vale family doesn’t send anything less."
BRONZE TIER — DEMOTIONS (Bronze → Rust)
Five names.
Fourth one: Percival Smith — Rank 8, Green Talent — Medical Leave
Kael smiled.
Percival had been demoted and broken. How poetic.
SILVER TIER — PROMOTIONS (Silver → Gold)
Karacus Drakemore — Rank 9, Blue Talent — Dragon-Kin
No surprise there.
SILVER TIER — DEMOTIONS (Silver → Bronze)
Five names.
The vampire closed the board.
"Newly promoted students will report to their assigned dormitories by noon. Demoted students have one hour to clear their belongings." Her smile widened. "Welcome to your new tiers. Try to survive."
RUST TIER DORMITORY — NOON
Rust Tier was exactly what Kael expected: slightly less depressing than Iron, but still garbage.
The dormitory was older but better maintained.
Small victories.
Aria had already scouted the basement.
"Rust Tier students are Rank 6 to 8," she reported. "Mostly Green talent with a few Orange. You’ll still be the weakest on paper."
"On paper."
"The Bronze Tier demotions are coming down today. Five students who lost their positions. They’ll be angry."
"Let them be angry."
"Kira is in Rust too."
"I know."
"She’s been staring at your dormitory door for twenty minutes."
Kael sighed.
He opened the door.
Kira stood in the hallway, arms crossed, yellow eyes blazing.
"You got promoted."
"I did."
"You forfeited. I won that match."
"Technically correct. The administration disagreed with your interpretation."
"They should have made you stay in Iron. You didn’t earn this."
Kael leaned against the doorframe.
"Kira. Do you know why I forfeited?"
"Because you’re arrogant."
"Because fighting you at my actual level would have ended your tournament career. I compressed gravity around your fists during our match. Did you feel it?"
Kira’s face changed.
"Now imagine what would have happened if I’d used that compression on your head instead of your fists."
She was quiet.
"You would have killed me," she said flatly.
"I would have hurt you badly enough that you couldn’t fight for months. The wards would have prevented death but not injury." Kael held her gaze. "I didn’t forfeit because I was scared or bored. I forfeited because you didn’t deserve to be dismantled in front of two thousand people."
"That’s—"
"Insulting? Probably. But it’s the truth." He stepped back. "You’re good, Kira. Better than anyone in Iron Tier. Maybe better than most in Rust. But you’re not ready for what I am yet. When you are, I’ll fight you properly."
He closed the door.
Kira stared at the wood grain.
Her fists clenched.
Lightning crackled.
Then she laughed.
"That absolute bastard, I’m going to beat you next time." she whispered.
But she was smiling.
"What a battle maniac", Kael whispered.
EVENING — RUST TIER COMMON ROOM
Rust Tier common room was larger than Iron’s — actually furnished, with couches that didn’t have springs poking through and lighting that didn’t flicker.
Kael took his usual corner.
New faces surrounded him. Rust Tier students who’d been promoted or had been here for months. All of them curious about the Iron Tier transfer who’d broken a Bronze Tier student’s wrist and gotten a special promotion.
A werewolf approached first.
"You’re the Vorn kid."
"That’s me."
"Name’s Knox. Pack Third of the Redclaw Clan." He sat down without being invited. "You really beat five Bronze Tier students last night?"
"Four. The fifth ran."
"And you caught a sword with two fingers during the tournament?"
"Technically, I caught it with my index and middle finger. Two fingers is less specific."
Knox stared at him.
Then he laughed.
"I like you already." He leaned back. "Fair warning — Rust Tier isn’t like Iron. The people here are actually good. Green talent across the board. Some Blue. If you’re really Orange talent with a Standard core, you’re going to get crushed."
"Noted."
"Just because I like you doesn’t mean I won’t fight you in the next tournament."
"I’d be disappointed if you didn’t."
Another figure approached — an elf woman with silver hair and cold eyes.
"You’re Kael Vorn."
"And you are?"
"Lira Chen. Ranked fourth in Iron Tier. Promoted with you." She sat across from him. "I watched your fights. You moved like someone who’s been fighting for decades. Orange talent with a Standard core doesn’t produce that kind of movement."
"Maybe I’m just talented."
"Maybe you’re lying." Her eyes narrowed. "I don’t know what you’re hiding. But I’m going to find out."
"Feel free."
She stood and walked away.
Knox watched her go.
"She’s going to be a problem."
"Probably."
"You have a lot of those."
"What will be the fun in the academy if there wasn’t so much trouble."
NIGHT — ROOF
Kael sat on the Rust Tier roof, looking at stars that still weren’t his.
The System pulsed.
[INFORMATION UPDATE]
Cross-Academy Tournament — End of Year
Format: Top 7 first-year students from each academy in the Skyfall Galaxy compete.
Academies confirmed:
- The Crucible (5 planets, ~2000 first-years)
- Astral Academy (Starfall System, ~1500 first-years)
- Obsidian Institute (Darkreach System, ~800 first-years)
- Verdant Sanctuary (Greenveil System, ~1200 first-years)
- Three additional academies pending confirmation
Selection Method: Internal ranking, tournament performance, and instructor recommendation.
Prize: Unspecified. Historically includes rare resources, technique manuals, and inter-academy political capital.
Note: This is a first-year only competition. Second-year and above have separate events.
Kael absorbed the information.
Seven students. Out of two thousand. Selected for a galaxy-wide competition.
"That’s a long way off."
Eight months. The competition occurs at the end of the academic year.
"I’ll be ready."
You’ll need to be. The other academies send their absolute best. Astral Academy in particular has a first-year with Purple talent and a Domain seed.
Kael raised an eyebrow.
"Domain seed at first-year level?"
Confirmed. Name: Lyra Du Pont. Royal family connection. Light Manipulation with incipient Domain manifestation. She defeated a Foundation Establishment Rank 3 instructor during her enrollment exam.
"Light Manipulation with a Domain seed." Kael smiled. "I wonder how she’d fare against shadow."
Unknown. Light and Shadow are conceptual opposites. The interaction would be unpredictable.
"Then I’ll have to find out."
Kira Storm has requested a sparring match through official channels.
"When?"
"Tomorrow morning. Dawn."
Kael closed his eyes.
"Tell her I accept."
Already did.
"Of course you did."
