The lecture hall was a amphitheater carved from living crystal.
Kael sat in the back row — his preferred position — watching Rust Tier students file in with varying degrees of enthusiasm.
The instructor was a phoenix-kin woman — hair like molten copper, eyes that flickered with inner flame, wings folded against her back in a way that suggested she could unfold them at any moment and burn the entire hall to ash.
"Beast Clans of the Skyfall Galaxy," she announced, and a holographic map erupted across the front wall. "Open your tablets. Take notes. Questions will be answered after the lecture, not during. If you ask something I already covered, I will set you on fire. I’m not joking. I’ve done it before."
The room went very quiet.
"The beast clans are not a monolith. Repeat that. Not. A. Monolith." She tapped the map, and it divided into colored sections. "There are three tiers of beast clan hierarchy, and confusing them will get you killed."
THE FOUR SACRED BEASTS
Four icons appeared at the top of the map — each one massive, each one radiating projected power that made the weaker students shift uncomfortably.
"The Four Sacred Beasts. Dragons. White Tigers. Black Tortoises. Phoenixes." The instructor’s wings rustled. "I’m Phoenix-kin, in case you hadn’t noticed. Yes, I’m biased. No, I don’t care."
Laughter rippled through the room.
"These four clans predate human civilization. They are not ’beast clans’ in the way you understand them. They are forces of nature given form. Each Sacred Beast clan claims dominion over a fundamental aspect of reality."
The map highlighted each clan.
Dragon Clan
Dominion: Space and Gravity
Territory: Draconis Prime and seventeen subordinate worlds
Current Emperor: Frost Dragon Emperor
Notable: Karacus Drakemore is a direct descendant
Population: Approximately 400,000 across all worlds
Trait: Each dragon can trace lineage to the First Dragon. Blood purity determines power ceiling.
White Tiger Clan
Dominion: Physical Destruction and War
Territory: Five worlds in the Berserker Reach
Current Emperor: War Tiger Emperor
Population: Approximately 300,000
Trait: Tiger-kin are born warriors. Their bodies are weapons. Most never learn techniques — they don’t need them.
Black Tortoise Clan
Dominion: Defense and Water
Territory: Three ocean worlds, two continental worlds
Current Emperor: Abyssal Tortoise Emperor
Population: Approximately 250,000
Trait: Tortoise-kin are nearly indestructible at birth. Their cultivation focuses on extending that invulnerability to others.
Phoenix Clan
Dominion: Rebirth and Fire
Territory: Four worlds in the Solar Reaches
Current Empress: Cinder Phoenix Empress
Population: Approximately 150,000 — smallest Sacred Beast clan
Trait: Phoenix-kin can resurrect from death. Each resurrection costs something permanent — memories, emotions, lifespan.
"Note the populations," the instructor said. "Sacred Beast clans are rare. A single dragon is worth a thousand human soldiers. A single tiger-kin in a berserker state can level a city. When the Sacred Beasts move, galaxies hold their breath."
THE ROYAL BEAST CLANS
The map expanded to show dozens of smaller territories.
"Below the Sacred Beasts sit the Royal Beast Clans. Not ancient like the Four. Not powerful enough to challenge them. But significant enough that no one ignores them."
Icons appeared: a kirin, a fox with nine tails, a wolf, an ant, a lion, a snake.
Kirin Clan
Dominion: Fortune and Purification
Territory: Two worlds
Population: Approximately 800,000
Trait: Kirin-kin bring luck to allies and misfortune to enemies. They are sought after as political allies and feared as enemies. Most Kirin-kin are diplomats, not warriors.
Fox Clan (Royal)
Territory: Three worlds
Population: Approximately 1.2 million
Trait: Illusion specialists. Nine-tailed foxes are considered divine within the clan. The more tails a fox-kin possesses, the stronger their illusions. Maximum observed: seven tails in the current generation.
Kael noticed several fox-kin students in the lecture hall taking notes with particular intensity.
Wolf Clan
Territory: Two worlds
Population: Approximately 2 million
Trait: Pack hunters. Individually, wolf-kin are modest fighters. In groups of ten or more, they develop a telepathic link that makes them devastatingly coordinated. In packs of a hundred, they can challenge Sacred Beast clan members.
Knox shifted beside Kael.
Ant Clan
Territory: Seven worlds — most numerous beast clan territory
Population: Estimated 50-80 billion
The room went silent."Yes, you heard me. Fifty to eighty billion. The Ant Clan reproduces faster than any other beast race. A single queen can lay ten thousand eggs per cycle. Their warriors are individually weak — Iron Tier equivalent at maturity. But they have numbers. During the Ant Clan Invasion three hundred years ago, they fielded an army of two billion against the human alliance."
Lion Clan
Territory: Four worlds
Population: Approximately 1.5 million
Trait: Royal authority. Lion-kin emit a passive aura that weakens the fighting spirit of non-beast races. In group settings, this aura stacks. A pride of twenty lion-kin can reduce human cultivators by two full ranks just through proximity.
Snake Clan
Territory: Two worlds
Population: Approximately 900,000
Trait: Poison and assassination. Snake-kin are feared for their venom — a single bite from a mature snake-kin can kill Spirit Soul cultivators if not treated immediately. They are also the primary source of beast-kin assassins in the Skyfall Galaxy.
"Questions?" The instructor looked up.
A hand rose in the front row. A dragon-kin student with glinting blue scales.
"How do beast-kin hybrids work? If a dragon-kin and a human have a child, what determines the offspring’s abilities?"
"Genetics are complicated and boring. Short answer: the child inherits diluted versions of both parents’ traits. A dragon-human hybrid might have enhanced strength but no true dragon powers. The purer the bloodline, the stronger the inheritance."
Another hand. A fox-kin girl with three tails.
"What about the relationship between clans? Are the Sacred Beasts at war with the Royal clans?"
"The Sacred Beasts don’t war with anyone. They don’t need to. The Royal clans acknowledge their superiority and pay tribute in exchange for protection and trade access. When a Royal clan gets uppity, a Sacred Beast clan sends one representative to remind them why the hierarchy exists." The phoenix-kin smiled. "It’s very efficient."
The lecture continued for another hour — covering inter-clan politics, trade relationships, historical conflicts, and cultural practices. Kael absorbed it all through Enhanced Mana Sight, the information burning into his memory like brand marks.
When the class dismissed, Knox stretched and yawned.
"So. Fifty billion ants."
"Terrifying," Kael agreed.
"My pack back home used to joke that the only thing scarier than a dragon was an ant colony that got organized." Knox’s expression sobered. "Nobody’s laughing anymore."
"Your pack?"
"Redclaw. We are quite small with only seven hundred members across two moons." He shrugged. "We’re nothing in the grand scheme. One of dozens of wolf packs on my home world. But they’re mine."
Kael nodded.
"You’re different from the other beast-kin I’ve met," he said.
"Different how?"
"Less aggressive. More thoughtful."
"Wolf-kin who charge blindly die young. My alpha taught me to watch before I bite." Knox grinned. "Also, I’m not stupid enough to pick a fight with someone who broke five Bronze Tier students in an alley."
"I give you credit for being smart."
Rust Tier combat training was different from Iron Tier.
Iron Tier had been about survival. Basic forms, crude sparring, desperation.
Rust Tier was about technique.
The training yard was four times larger than Iron’s, with dedicated zones for different specializations — a lightning range, a gravity chamber, a shadow maze, an elemental arena. Instructors were Gold Tier veterans, each one capable of killing the entire Rust Tier student body without effort.
Today’s session was led by a tiger-kin woman with orange fur and muscles that made her look like she’d been carved from stone.
"Pair up. Spar until I say stop. No killing. No maiming. Everything else is fair game."
Kira appeared beside Kael.
"I requested you."
"I know."
"I want a real fight this time."
"You’re not ready."
"I’m never going to be ready if you keep saying that." Her yellow eyes burned. "Fight me like you mean it."
Kael studied her.
Three weeks since the tournament. Her lightning control had improved — tighter arcs, less wasted energy. Her footwork was sharper. She’d been training hard.
But she was still Core Formation Rank 7. Still Green talent. Still fundamentally limited by a ceiling he’d already shattered.
"Fine."
They squared off.
Kira attacked.
This time, she didn’t lead with lightning. She led with a feint — a jab aimed at his jaw that was designed to miss, pulling his guard left while her right hand came up with a lightning-charged palm strike.
Kael sidestepped the feint, caught the palm strike, and pulled.
Kira stumbled forward, off-balance. Kael’s knee found her stomach. She doubled over. His elbow came down on her back.
She hit the ground.
"Again," she gasped, scrambling up.
She attacked again. And again. And again.
Each time, she lasted longer. Each time, she adapted. Her lightning came from new angles. Her feints grew more sophisticated. She stopped telegraphing her power usage.
Kael hit her every time.
Different methods each round. Gravity redirection. Lightning parry. Shadow trip. Straight punch. Knee strike. Elbow drop. Once, he just stood still and let her exhaust herself against his gravity wall.
After the fifteenth round, Kira lay on the ground, chest heaving, covered in bruises, lightning flickering weakly around her fingers.
"Again," she whispered.
"No."
"Pleas—"
"You’ve adapted well. You’ll adapt better with rest." He offered his hand. "Tomorrow."
She stared at it.
Took it.
He pulled her up.
"You’re still not ready," he said. "But you’re closer than you were an hour ago."
Kira said breathlessly with a pout.
"You’re so frustrating."
"I get that a lot."
She limped toward the medical station.
Kael watched her go.
Kael walked toward the gravity chamber.
"I need to train."
He entered the chamber and sealed the door.
