Kael yanked the intent back.
The slaughter intent retreated into his chest like a predator returning to its den— gone before anyone could properly analyze what they’d felt.
Isabella’s eyes tracked him with new wariness. She’d felt it too—the weight of something that didn’t belong in a second-year student’s chest. But she didn’t ask.
"Star Pull."
The words left Kael’s lips without conscious thought. His hand extended, fingers splayed, and gravity reversed—pulling inward. A singularity point formed in his palm, generating attraction rather than repulsion.
[NOTIFICATION: New Technique Learned — Star Pull (Earth Grade, Gravity)]
[Effect: Creates localized gravitational attraction point. Pulls targets toward user. Strength scales with gravity manipulation proficiency and mana investment.]
Isabella’s eyes widened as she felt the pull. Her feet slid forward against her will, the arena floor groaning beneath the sudden shift in forces. But she was a Vorn. She’d prepared for gravity manipulation her entire life.
A portal opened in front of her. She stepped through—
And emerged at the opposite end of the arena from another portal, twenty meters from Kael’s position.
Kael’s Spirit Eyes dissected the maneuver in real-time. The way she’d opened the exit portal before fully entering the entrance. The slight delay between activation and completion. The fixed positioning—
She can’t move them once they’re open.
Isabella’s portal creation was powerful, versatile, and absolutely devastating in combination with her gravity. But it had a fundamental limitation. The portals were anchored. Once placed, they stayed exactly where she’d put them.
Which meant she needed to keep moving. Needed to keep creating new exit points. Needed to maintain constant spatial awareness while also fighting.
Kael smiled.
He wanted to fight again today. The inter-academy competition was just a few weeks away now, and he had ranks to climb. No point exhausting himself in a prolonged war of attrition against his sister when he could end this decisively.
His hands came up. Index finger and middle finger together on both hands, crossed at the wrists.
"Realm of Darkness."
"Darker Than Black."
[NOTIFICATION: Realm of Darkness: Darker Than Black (Quasi Mystic Grade) — Activated]
The dome expanded outward like a sphere of absolute night. It swallowed the arena whole—the ring, the boundary markers, even the air itself seemed to darken as the technique took hold. The light didn’t fade. It simply ceased to exist, as if the concept of illumination had been surgically removed from that patch of reality.
The referee frowned.
He was Spirit Soul realm. He’d seen techniques that could blind, techniques that could obscure, techniques that could trick the eye. But this wasn’t any of those. This was absence. His cultivation couldn’t penetrate it. His senses couldn’t map it. The darkness simply was, and it refused to yield.
The crowd erupted.
"What type of technique is that?"
"I thought he had only lightning and gravity! Where did shadow powers come from?"
"Who do you think will win, Kael or Isabella?"
"I think Isabella will win. She’s smarter."
"Are you dumb? Kael will still win. Did you see that intent?"
Higher up, where the wind carried the scent of battle and the view was unobstructed, two figures watched from a stone balcony.
Cassian Vale sipped tea from a cup. The wind tugged at his silver hair, but his expression remained perfectly composed—amused, perhaps, but never surprised.
"Who do you think will win?" he asked.
Yenna Frostveil stood beside him, arms crossed, ice-blue eyes fixed on the dome of darkness below.
"I’m sure you already saw who won." Her voice carried no accusation—just flat acknowledgment of what Cassian was. "What type of intent did he awaken?"
Cassian took another sip. "You guys are the geniuses with intent. I don’t know much about it." He smiled into his cup. "You could ask that sword demon, Caelan."
Yenna’s expression cooled further—if such a thing were possible. "You know that guy isn’t interested in anything except the sword."
"Which is exactly why he’d give you an honest answer."
Inside the realm, Isabella fought against more than darkness.
Her portal ability was failing.
The output had dropped—significantly. Where she could normally tear open an exit in under a second, it now took three. Four. The spatial fabric inside Kael’s domain resisted her manipulation like water resisting a blade. She could feel the technique pushing back against her power, suppressing it without directly attacking.
She managed to create a portal. Stumbled toward it, half-blind in the absolute darkness, and thrust her head through—
Light. Glorious, painful light.
But the barrier didn’t end at the ring boundary. It covered the entire arena. If she stepped out, she’d be outside the ring. She’d lose.
Isabella pulled her head back and closed the portal with a frustrated exhale. Blood trickled from her nose—the strain of forcing spatial manipulation in hostile territory taking its toll.
She looked at Kael, who stood in the darkness as if it were his living room, and her expression hardened into something serious.
Kael smiled back.
"Well, that’s new." He rolled his shoulders, already filing away the technique’s limitations for future refinement. "I have to improve it even more to completely block spatial abilities. But for now—let’s end this."
His right hand rose.
A spherical mass of electricity formed around his palm—blinding in the absolute darkness, bolts of lightning arcing outward and striking the barrier’s inner surface. The only illumination in a world without light.
Lightning Blade.
But he wasn’t finished.
Gravity gathered around the electrical mass, dense and hungry. A localized gravity field generated around his palm, acting as an artificial black hole—pulling everything toward the concentrated point of destruction.
Gravity Blade.
Isabella felt the pull immediately. Her body slid forward against her will, dragged toward the singularity of destruction that Kael had created. She raised her bow, nocked an arrow in desperation, and fired—gravity-reinforced projectile screaming toward Kael’s position.
Shadow Step.
He dissolved into darkness and reappeared directly above Isabella, the combined attack descending like the wrath of something ancient. Isabella’s eyes widened—
A portal opened above her.
Blood sprayed from her nose as she forced the spatial tear into existence through sheer willpower. The portal’s edges wavered, unstable, already beginning to collapse under the combined pressure of Kael’s gravity and the Realm of Darkness’s suppression—
It wasn’t enough.
The portal shattered—spatial fragments dissolving into nothing as the technique destabilized beyond recovery. Isabella’s eyes tracked the collapsing tear with something that might have been acceptance.
Kael descended.
"Raishōton: Shinki-raikiri."
The attack struck Isabella like a falling star.
But Kael had already reduced the output—pulling back at the last possible moment, converting a killing blow into a decisive but survivable impact. The Realm of Darkness dissolved according to his will, light flooding back into the arena as the technique collapsed.
Isabella’s body flew backward, crashing through the ring boundary and tumbling across the stone floor beyond.
The referee’s voice cut through the stunned silence.
"Kael Vorn wins the exciting duel—moving up to rank eight, overtaking Isabella Vorn."
[NOTIFICATION: Technique Fusion Successful]
[Lightning Blade (Heaven Grade) + Gravity Blade (Heaven Grade) = Raishōton: Shinki-raikiri (Heaven Grade)]
[Effect: Combines lightning destruction with gravitational compression into a single devastating attack. Gravity field pulls targets toward impact point while lightning energy destroys on contact. Highly efficient mana consumption due to fusion synergy.]
[Note: Name selected by host. The System does not understand the reference but respects the aesthetic.]
Kael stepped out of the ring and walked toward where Isabella lay crumpled on the stone. He extended his hand.
She took it without protest, rising to her feet with a wince. Bruises were already forming on her arms, and blood still dripped from her nose, but her eyes were clear. Calculating.
"You better not disappoint the family."
Kael smirked. "I would love to if it puts a frown on father’s face."
Isabella sighed—a sound that carried decades of Vorn-family exhaustion in a single breath. "You really are impossible."
She walked away without looking back.
In the Gold Tier section of the spectator stands, Sebastian Vorn’s hands gripped the railing hard enough to turn his knuckles white.
Foundation Establishment Rank 8.
That was where he sat—ranked somewhere in the forties now, irrelevant, forgotten. His siblings had long since surpassed him. Isabella at Mana Heart Rank 2. Kael at Mana Heart Rank 1. Both of them fighting in the top ten while he watched from the crowd like a common spectator.
Rage boiled in his chest—hot, impotent, humiliating.
We awakened at the same time. We started from the same place. How—
He couldn’t finish the thought. Couldn’t admit the answer.
Kael turned back to the referee, hands in his pockets, expression casual.
"I want to continue."
The referee’s dead eyes flickered with something that might have been interest. "You’ve already fought one match. The strain—"
"I’m fine." Kael’s smile sharpened. "Who’s rank seven?"
The crowd erupted again.
"Does he want to break into the top seven for the inter-academy tournament?"
"Everyone wants to go to the tournament!
"He’s crazy. He just fought his sister!"
"Dude must be exhausted after spamming multiple techniques, right?"
Kael’s gaze swept the arena, found the figure he was looking for—silver hair, violet eyes, the predatory stillness of a swordsman.
"I challenge Caelan Asten."
