The referee raised his hand, voice booming across the arena.

"Kael Cassian Vorn defeats Orion Blake! Moving up to Rank 9 in the Heaven’s Gate Academy!"

The crowd erupted.

Cheers, screams, stamping feet, the entire arena shaking with the force of a thousand students losing their minds simultaneously. Rank 24 to Rank 9 in a single day. Four consecutive victories without seeing his full power.

Yenna sat in the stands, ice-blue eyes fixed on Kael’s retreating back, and felt something cold settle in her chest.

She wasn’t sure if it was fear or anticipation.

Kael walked off the stage with a smile on his face.

"Well, that was fun."

His body ached in the good way—muscles sore from sustained impact, joints stiff from repeated shock absorption, a faint bruise forming on his jaw where Orion’s elbow had connected. The Void Body Refinement was already working on the damage, knitting micro-tears and compressing swelling, but it would take a few hours before he felt completely normal.

The corridor leading away from the arena was crowded—students parting around him with expressions ranging from awe to fear to barely concealed jealousy. A few tried to catch his eye. He ignored them all.

"You really are full of surprises."

Kael stopped.

He knew that voice.

He turned.

Mira Chen stood against the corridor wall, arms crossed, her analytical gaze sweeping over him with the same intensity she used to dissect mission reports. Beside her—

Aria.

With those beautiful violet eyes and sharp black hair with sharp facial features. A mask that wasn’t on her face for once, leaving her beauty fully exposed to the world. She looked different—older somehow, harder, the soft edges of the guild orphan replaced by something sharper.

"Aria."

His arms wrapped around her before she could react, pulling her into a hug tight enough to bruise. She stiffened for a split second—then melted into him, her own arms coming up to grip his back.

"Damn, I missed you." His voice came out muffled against her shoulder. "How did you get into the Orion Academy?"

Aria pulled back just enough to look at him. Her violet eyes were bright with something that might have been happiness or might have been the particular emotion she only ever showed him.

"I asked."

"You—"

"During year one. On Athelas." She shrugged, a small smile tugging at her lips. "I told you the academy was slowing my progress. You agreed for me to go back to the guild on the condition I will be back stronger. So I went back to the guild, trained for a few months, and when a slot opened up here—someone from my guild died on a mission—I applied for a transfer."

"Someone died?"

"Dirk. He was an asshole anyway." Her tone was flat. The guild orphan way of processing death. "His loss, my gain."

Kael stared at her.

Foundation Establishment Rank 8. He could feel it now, pressed against him, her mana signature strong and steady. But there was something else—two distinct elements woven through her core, intertwined in a way that shouldn’t have been possible.

Shadow and Light.

Opposing elements. Like Mira’s fire and ice, but different somehow—darker and brighter at the same time, existing in paradox rather than conflict.

"You hid this," Kael said.

"I hid a lot of things." Aria pulled fully out of his arms and crossed her own. "The guild taught me to keep secrets. You taught me to use them."

Mira watched the exchange with raised eyebrows but didn’t comment.

"Which class are you in currently and what rank are you?", Kael asked. 𝒇𝒓𝙚𝒆𝔀𝓮𝓫𝒏𝓸𝙫𝓮𝓵.𝓬𝙤𝙢

"Rank 96".

"Rank 96," Kael said after a moment.

Aria’s expression twitched.

He laughed.

"Rank 96!" He was still laughing. "You come back Foundation Establishment Rank 8 with dual elements and they put you at Rank 96?"

"Shut up—"

"Rank 96!"

SMACK.

Aria’s palm connected with his chest—not hard enough to actually hurt as she was pouting now.

"Why are you laughing? With my talent, I’m going to be in Gold class soon."

Kael raised his hands in surrender. "Alright, alright, love."

"I’m serious."

"I believe you."

"Stop laughing."

"I’m not laughing."

"You’re absolutely still smiling."

Kael’s smirk widened. He reached out and ruffled her hair—an old gesture, one he’d used when she was still learning to hold a blade without cutting herself.

"Take care." His voice softened slightly. "You better start climbing now. Show them what you can do."

Aria swatted his hand away, but some of the tension left her shoulders. She turned without another word and walked toward the challenge hall, black hair swaying behind her.

Kael watched her go.

"She’s strong, how many more secrets do you have?" Mira said quietly.

Kael only smiles.

"How did she become so strong in a short time?"

"She learned from the best." Kael turned. "Speaking of learning from the best—how’s Mason?"

Mira’s expression flickered. Just for an instant.

"We broke up."

"Oh?" Kael raised an eyebrow. "Do tell."

"Not your business."

"My favorite kind of business."

Mira’s hand came up, pointing at his face. "Don’t."

Kael grinned and held up both hands in mock surrender.

Before Mira could respond, another voice cut through the corridor chatter.

"You’re making quite the show, aren’t you?"

Isabella Vorn approached with her characteristic measured stride—controlled, deliberate, every step placed with exact precision. She looked like Kael remembered. Same sharp features and quite the sharp tongue.

"Can’t say I don’t enjoy it." Kael leaned against the wall. "Only useful charismatic trait I got from Father. How’s the academy, sister? You seem to be having quite the blast since you’re now ranked eighth."

"You seemed to be having your fun too." Isabella stopped a few feet away, arms folding. "You know I can’t really understand you."

"Sis." Kael pushed off the wall, tilting his head with an exaggerated expression of concern. "I know you’re smart. But you might hurt your brain cells trying to understand me."

Isabella’s gaze went flat as she glare at him murderously.

Kael smirked.

He started walking, passing her.

"Better protect your place," he said without looking back. "You’re eighth. I might challenge you anytime."
