Kael dismissed the notification as he walked to the window looking out at the academy grounds.

In the distance, the leadership board glowed with its updated rankings. His name sat at Rank 24.

That was about to change.

Kael smiled.

Time to start his challenge streak.

Kael hadn’t seen the fox sisters since returning from Morir.

Two months ago, he’d asked around—casually and a beast-kin woman in Silver class had told him they’d left for their clan after completing a mission.

He hadn’t asked again.

Their rankings still sat on the leaderboard, though. Rue at Rank 11 while Sage at Rank 14. Both apparently maintaining their positions through remote challenges or some clan-based arrangement Kael didn’t fully understand. The Fox Clan had resources that made the academy’s system seem quaint.

Kael had other priorities.

The arena was packed.

Word had spread through the academy like wildfire—Kael Vorn was challenging. After two months of silence, of dropping ranks, of letting everyone whisper about whether the Morir trio was overrated, the sixth son of the Vorn family had walked into the challenge hall and pointed at Rank 18.

Quinn Aldric. Metal manipulation. Foundation Establishment Rank 6.

The crowd loved drama, and Kael hadn’t given them any in weeks. They were hungry.

Quinn stood on the stage, arms crossed, a cocky grin plastered across his face. Metal gauntlets covered his forearms—standard combat gear for his element, channels for directing his power. Behind him, an assortment of weapons hovered in the air—swords, axes, spears, all made of conjured metal, all pointed at the stage entrance.

"You’re that guy I overtook last two weeks." Quinn’s grin widened. "Come on, how did you drop? Come tell me."

Kael walked onto the stage without responding.

"Seriously though." Quinn spread his arms, gesturing at the floating weapons. "I was expecting something more intimidating. You know what they say about you—Morir this, Guardian that—then I check the board and you’re sitting at Rank 24? Disappointing."

Kael stopped at the center of the stage. His silver eyes met Quinn’s.

"Let’s get this over with."

"Come on, I was just joking." Quinn’s grin faltered slightly. "Did I hit a sore spot?"

The crowd started murmuring. Excitement rippled through the stands—people leaning forward, craning necks, pulling out recording devices. A Rank 24 challenging a Rank 18 was unusual.

The referee stepped forward. "Combatants ready?"

Quinn rolled his shoulders. The floating weapons around him shifted with their tips angling toward Kael.

"Begin."

Quinn moved first.

The ground beneath Kael’s feet split open—a metal shuffle, erupting upward like a platform. Kael felt it coming a full second before it arrived, his gravity sense mapping the underground construction with irritating clarity.

The shuffle lifted him into the air. Three meters. Five. The crowd gasped as he rose, suspended on a platform of conjured metal, Quinn’s weapons tracking his ascent from below.

Quinn jumped onto his own shuffle—a second one, rising parallel to Kael’s—and looked down with a smirk.

"Let’s see what you can do, pussy."

Kael looked up at him as he raised his left hand to the sky.

"You’re so flashy."

Lightning crashed from the sky as an uncontrolled lightning came crashing down from the sky.

The bolt hit Quinn like the fist of an angry god.

ZAAAAP!

Quinn’s metal shuffle vaporized. His gauntlets sparked and short-circuited. His body convulsed, eyes rolling back, every muscle seizing as enough electricity to power a small district coursed through him as he fell to the ground.

The floating weapons clattered to the stage floor, losing their conjurer’s will. Quinn hit the ground a moment later, unconscious before impact, smoke rising from his twitching form.

Kael landed lightly beside him.

He hadn’t moved from his platform. He’d simply stood there, looked up, and dropped lightning on Quinn’s head like a man swatting a fly.

The arena went silent.

Kael looked at the unconscious form with something between boredom and disappointment.

"So weak." His voice carried across the stunned crowd. "Thought he could last five seconds because of his mouth. Looks like I overestimated him."

The referee blinked. Then shook himself and raised his hand.

"Kael wins. Moving to Rank 20." He glanced at Kael. "Would you still like to continue?"

"Of course." Kael walked toward the edge of the stage, scanning the crowd. "I haven’t even had any fun yet. How can I leave?"

Murmurs intensified. Rank 24 to Rank 18 was a six-position jump. Two months of perceived weakness, and now this?

"Who would you like to challenge?"

Kael’s finger rose.

It pointed toward a specific section of the crowd—Gold class, near the front, where a young man with red hair and an arrogant expression stood with his arms crossed.

Gareth Gisborne. Rank 12. Fire manipulation. Foundation Establishment Rank 7.

The crowd around Gareth parted. He stepped through, descending the stands with controlled movements, flames flickering at his fingertips.

He hit the stage floor and looked at Kael with open condescension.

"Did the little win get to your head?"

Kael shrugged. "I don’t know. Maybe it did."

Gareth’s eyes narrowed.

"Begin." The referee announced,

Gareth’s hands came up as fire bloomed between his palms—and multiple fireballs, each the size of a basketball, launched toward Kael in a spreading pattern designed to cover escape angles.

Kael’s hand dipped into his pocket as four coins flew into the air.

They activated mid-flight—Barrier runes triggering in sequence, forming a row of shimmering energy shields between Kael and the incoming fireballs.

BOOM. BOOM. BOOM. BOOM.

Fire and barrier collided. Each shield held for exactly as long as it needed to—absorbing the impact, dispersing the energy, dying in a shower of sparks before the next shield took over.

When the smoke cleared, Kael was standing exactly where he’d been with a smirk across his face.

"Come on. That can’t be all, can it?"
