Mark of Sin: Bound to the Cruel Alpha

Chapter 9: Darkness

Magnus strode into the grand entrance of the building without a backward glance, letting the heavy door swing shut behind him. I hadn’t expected any chivalry. Quickening my pace, I slipped through just in time, chasing the receding echo of his heavy, rhythmic footsteps.

The corridor was narrow, and his frame seemed to devour the entire space. His back was immense, broad and impenetrable as a fortress wall.

He moved with absolute, terrifying confidence, navigating every sharp turn and intersection with the ease of a predator ruling his own territory. With every second, the distance between us grew. A single one of his long, powerful strides required three or four of my frantic steps just to match.

He possessed the towering height, the raw muscular power, and the legacy of a long, dominant life—everything I would never have.

He didn’t bother checking to see if I was keeping up. He didn’t need to. He knew I had nowhere to run.

The laboratory office we entered was spacious but claustrophobic, packed with medical staff. Doctors, nurses, and lab assistants stood frozen in place. Every single one of them was deathly pale, their faces masked in a paralyzing terror that seemed to cling to them like grime.

The warnings Annie had whispered to me this morning flashed through my mind.

He belonged to the ruling pack. Magnus was the heir—the future Alpha King of one of the most ruthless and powerful packs in the territory, if not the entire continent. He was a man whose rarest smile could buy fortunes, and whose slightest displeasure meant execution.

The gravity of my situation crashed down on me, turning an already terrifying nightmare into an inescapable reality.

"Mr. Rainn! We have been waiting for your arrival, and we are profoundly honored to assist you!" the chief physician stammered, his face as white as his lab coat, his hands visibly slick with sweat.

Magnus didn’t even slow his stride.

"Save your pathetic sycophancy for the whores in the brothel you frequent every Wednesday," his voice cut through the room like a scalpel, entirely devoid of emotion, merely stating a brutal fact. "Get your idiots to work. Test her."

He grabbed my arm. There was no gentleness in his grip—only pure, unyielding dominance. It was the casual, possessive hold of a master claiming a piece of property. My sleeve caught and tore upward, exposing my inner wrist to the harsh, buzzing glare of the fluorescent lights.

There it was. The calling mark. The crimson bud of the rose burned against my skin like a living, open flame.

Cain stared down at it, and the very air in the room began to vibrate with the sheer force of the rage radiating off him. If a look could incinerate, I would have been reduced to ashes on the spot.

Where his skin met mine, a violent jolt of electricity shot straight up my spine. His pheromones flooded my senses—a intoxicating wave of dark cedar, burning ash, and raw Alpha heat.

His sheer proximity and the crushing pressure of his aura slammed into my primal instincts, paralyzing my resolve. My inner voice whimpered, desperate to submit, to curl at his feet and beg for mercy.

With trembling hands and wide, panicked eyes, the doctor rushed forward to begin the test.

The subsequent hours dissolved into a seamless nightmare. They measured the mark, photographing it from a dozen angles under varying spectrums of light. Then came the blood draws.

When the needle pierced my skin, it felt less like a puncture to the vein and more like a violation of my soul. I watched the dark fluid fill the vials, terrified they were draining my very life force, drop by drop, before feeding it into whirring, hissing machines that processed my anatomy into data.

Time crawled, heavy and stagnant.

Outside the high windows, the night solidified into a pitch-black abyss, completely devoid of stars. Only the distant streetlights cut through the dark, casting cold, sickly yellow fractures across the glass.

Magnus remained anchored in the corner of the lab. He sat with one leg casually crossed over the other, burning through cigarette after cigarette.

He still refused to look at me. He didn’t demand answers or ask questions. He just smoked, staring fixedly at the ceiling through a haze of gray.

I didn’t want to know what violent, ruinous thoughts were churning behind that flawless brow, but the heavy, oppressive weight of his scent told me everything I needed to know: I was a complication he intended to eliminate.

Finally, the primary analyzer emitted a long, definitive chime. The printing mechanism whirred to life.

The chief physician extracted the diagnostic charts from the machine, his complexion turning so translucent and bloodless I half-expected him to dissolve into dust if touched.

His eyes scanned the raw data, checking the sequences and re-calculating the genetic markers over and over. When he finally looked up at Magnus, his eyes were wide with a terror that bordered on vertigo.

"M-Mr. Rainn... the data is absolute. The bond is verified. The mark is genuine."

The doctor’s voice fractured, his teeth clicking together so loudly the sound seemed to echo off the sterile tile walls.

Magnus stood up. The movement was agonizingly slow, his massive shadow stretching across the floor like a river of black ink. He approached the examination table, looming over me, a monolith of pure, predatory mass. Yet his eyes remained locked on the trembling physician. Never on me.

"Are you certain?" Magnus asked, his voice deceptively quiet.

The sheer volume of suppressed, glacial aggression laced in those three words made me want to shrink beneath the iron legs of the chair, to bury myself in the earth—anywhere his shadow couldn’t reach. His fury felt alive, a suffocating entity that devoured the remaining oxygen in the room.

"Yes," the doctor whispered, his head bowing automatically in submission.

Only then did Magnus lower his gaze to me. Looking up into those dark, bottomless eyes, I didn’t see a man. I didn’t see a wolf, or the powerful heir to a legendary pack title.

I saw a void. I saw a lethal, ancient darkness waiting to snap the chains of its leash and paint the room in blood.
