I bolted from the lounge as if a wildfire were snapping at my heels—and in a way, it truly was. The moment my foot hit the top step of the exit, my knees buckled, and I only managed to stay upright by blindly lunging for the cold metal railing.
My slick, trembling fingers skated over the smooth steel, and for a terrifying second, I nearly pitched forward face-first onto the concrete below. Inside my chest, my heart was hammering with such frantic, unchecked violence that the sheer sound of it drowned out the rest of the world.
Fear. It was everywhere. It leaked under my skin, pulsing through my veins instead of blood, clogging my lungs until the air felt like heavy sludge. Each ragged breath was a losing battle, as if I were desperately trying to inhale through a waterlogged rag.
My hands shook so violently that I slammed them against my thighs, trying to force the trembling to stop. I rubbed my palms against the coarse denim of my jeans once, twice, three times, trying to friction up some heat, but the chill was structural. It radiated from the very center of my marrow, from that dark place where panic curdles into ice. My skin burned from the rubbing, but no warmth came.
My eyes swept the deserted street and locked onto the parked vehicle. The black monster of an SUV sat beneath a flickering streetlamp, casting a long, warped shadow across the asphalt. Its heavily tinted windows didn’t reflect the amber light—they swallowed it, turning the machine into a black hole anchored in the middle of the pavement.
I couldn’t believe I was actually walking toward it. My legs moved on sheer autopilot, as if some foreign, terrifying entity had hijacked my nervous system. Every step reverberated in my temples like a dull, leaden blow. The ground beneath my sneakers felt unstable, fragile, like thin ice cracking over a bottomless trench.
The street was a vacuum. No passing cars, no pedestrians, not a single witness. Just me and this idling beast, waiting like a steel trap for its prey.
I looked over my shoulder nervously, straining to hear past the ringing in my ears. Somewhere deep in the slums, a hungry hound bayed at the moon. The wind rattled a piece of stray garbage across the concrete. Ordinary midnight sounds, yet tonight they felt sinister, wrong.
Unable to handle the agonizing suspense, I began to pace. Three steps left, three steps right. My hands clenched into tight fists, my fingernails digging into my palms until the skin nearly broke. The sharp spike of physical pain offered a minor distraction from the panic clawing at my throat. Just a fraction. For a fleeting second, I thought I was regaining control. My breathing began to level out, my pulse slowing to a heavy throb.
Right up until the moment I caught a reflection in the dark tint of the window.
A silhouette. Impossibly tall. Broad-shouldered. Looming directly behind me.
The world ground to a sudden, absolute halt.
The shock hit me so hard my brain couldn’t even process the danger. A sharp gasp tore from my throat as a massive, iron grip clamped down on my shoulder, spinning me around in one fluid, brutal jerk. My body felt completely weightless—a ragdoll under the brute force of his strength. He loomed over me, completely blotting out the street, the sky, the stars.
Magnus.
The heavy, ragged rhythm of his breathing dragged across my raw nerves like sandpaper over an open wound. Every exhale scorched my skin, making me flinch.
He wasn’t just crushing me with his physical mass; he was suffocating me with the sheer, unbridled weight of his Alpha aura. It rolled off him in thick, dark waves, paralyzing my ability to think. Inside my chest, my very soul was shrieking in total hysteria: Run, hide, submit.
Yet, I couldn’t tear my eyes away from his face.
Because his skin was splattered with fresh blood.
Dark, crimson drops dotted his high cheekbone, with a larger streak smearing down the line of his jaw. Perfect, violent droplets marred the pristine fabric of his white shirt. The stark reality of the scene slammed into my mind like a physical blow to the solar plexus.
"What did you do?" the question slipped past my lips before my brain could stop it.
His gray eyes pinned me to the spot like steel needles. They were cold, merciless, and swimming with a dark, primal satisfaction. There was something ancient and predatory lurking in his gaze—something that made me want to shrink into the earth and vanish. But I was already caught in his web.
"I taught that piece of trash the exact definition of agony," he stated smoothly.
The sheer neutrality of his tone made my teeth chatter. He truly was a monster. Any remaining doubt evaporated right then and there as I stared at the evidence of his cruelty. A total, remorseless beast.
The blood curdled in my veins at the realization that we were completely alone in the dark. But the true horror—the terrifying, inescapable nightmare—was that by the absolute pack law, this monster owned my fated ledger, and there was nowhere left to run.
"Is he alive?"
The corners of Magnus’s mouth peeled back into a dark, razor-sharp grin. In that exact fraction of a second, I realized I hadn’t truly understood the full spectrum of terror until now.
This was raw, animal panic—the kind that hijacked your biology and made every individual cell scream that you were marked for death. He looked ravenous. Like a predator that had just caught the first metallic taste of fresh blood on its tongue and now demanded the whole kill.
He took a heavy step forward. My instincts took over, forcing me backward until my spine collided with the unforgiving steel of the SUV. There was nowhere left to retreat.
He pinned me flush against the vehicle, his massive frame completely erasing the rest of the world. The stark stench of copper mixed with the heavy, intoxicating musk of his dominant Alpha pheromones, creating a suffocating, lethal cocktail that made my head spin.
Magnus leaned down, his mouth right against my ear. His boiling breath dragged across my skin, sending a violent, jagged line of goosebumps down my throat.
"Why do you care?" he purred, the sound vibrating through my bones. "Did you take a liking to that trash? Were you actually ready to spread your legs for him just to keep a slot at a second-rate lounge?"
