"Your order. I’m so sorry for the delay."
I forced my lips into a sweet, practiced smile, though my jaw was practically locking with tension. It wasn’t from the effort of grinning, but from the raw fury that had spent the last few hours curdling inside me, turning thick, sluggish, and toxic.
If I had known what I was truly signing up for when I walked through those doors, I never would have come.
The lounge reeled with the heavy, stifling scents of seared meat, expensive liquor, and werewolf entitlement.
It was that unmistakable, suffocating pheromone of predators who had never been told no a day in their lives. The arrogant weight of their presence clung to me, sinking into my skin, sticking to the cheap lace of the maid uniform, tangling in my hair, and wrapping around my thoughts like stale tobacco smoke.
You didn’t even have to touch them; just breathing the same air left you stained with their stench for days.
As it turned out, the bar was short-handed by two more servers, leaving a Gamma girl named Ella and me sprinting from table to table like clockwork toys for the past three and a half hours.
Unlike me, she was still full of energy. She’d been working here for a couple of years and practically laughed when I asked about the shortage.
High turnover, go figure. In a place that treated lower wolves like dynamic decor, nobody stayed long.
My eyes stung from exhaustion and the harsh, unforgiving glare of the overhead track lighting. The lounge seemed intentionally designed to eliminate shadows, ensuring the staff was on full display from every single angle.
Most of the clientele tonight were Alphas, their heavy, dominant pheromones overlapping in suffocating waves. A few important human men were mixed into the crowd, but even they carried themselves with that same insufferable arrogance, as if they were just temporarily playing a lesser role before inheriting the earth tomorrow.
"Well, finally," one Alpha drawled, his eyes bypassing the steak plate entirely. He looked at me. Not at the tray, not at the bill. Just me.
His gaze was a slow, clinical strip-search, treating me like a complimentary side dish included in the price of his premium cut.
I swallowed the venom rising in my throat. I had plenty of responses ready. A whole chorus of them. But life had beaten a vital lesson into me long before tonight: when your stomach is empty, your mouth stays shut. So now, with my calves pulsing like live wires and my chest vibrating with suppressed instinct, I did what I always did best. I smiled, and I submitted to the silence.
Ella and I ran ourselves ragged until closing. At some point, the concept of time dissolved. The minutes blurred together like passing taillights on a dark highway. I was moving entirely on muscle memory, my body operating as a mechanical puppet while the real me retreated deep inside, watching the whole performance like a detached spectator.
I was wearing someone else’s miserable life for the night, and honestly, the fit was terrible.
The bar owner settled my tabs quickly, his movements sharp and transactional, wasting no breath on small talk. He made me swear I’d be back in two days, and to my surprise, slapped down a few extra bills over our agreed rate.
It wasn’t an act of grace—men like him didn’t possess it. It was pure desperation. They were hemorrhaging staff, and desperation always pays a slightly higher premium. At least it was enough to cover a cab ride home so I wouldn’t have to walk the streets unprotected again.
But money was money, especially now.
"And on your way out, grab the trash bags by the kitchen and haul them to the dumpsters in the back alley," he called out over his shoulder.
I shrugged. A trash run was fine. After the degrading comments and predatory stares I’d endured tonight, a bag of garbage felt entirely honest. Waste didn’t smirk at you, and it didn’t track your scent like you were a piece of raw meat.
That was the burden of being a breeder; society expected you to drop to your knees the moment a powerful Alpha bared his teeth, practically begging for his favor. And the worst part? Some breeders actually did.
If I were being completely honest with myself, Alphas weren’t the only ones who bought into their own divine right to rule. My own family shared that exact toxic mindset.
Back home, my father and younger brother couldn’t even be bothered to clear their own plates. When I was younger, before my presentation, my mother, sister, and I shared the household chores equally. I hadn’t loved the work, but we did it together, and there was a genuine warmth between us.
Back then, I was comfortable. I naively believed my family actually loved me for who I was.
But as it turned out, love is a fragile thing when pack dynamics take over. The moment my breeder gene awakened and my scent began to shift, the entire household burden was dumped squarely on my shoulders.
I became the house slave overnight—cooking, cleaning, laundering. My mother and sister stopped washing their own coffee mugs, leaving their beds unmade for me to tend to.
"You’re a breeder now," they’d say with practiced indifference. "You need to prepare for a marriage to a ranking Alpha and breed a large nest of pups. You must learn to manage a household flawlessly."
But I could barely comprehend how I was supposed to be a perfect future matriarch when I was still trying to survive academy lectures, finish my homework, and keep my head above water. Yet the expectations only grew, suffocating me under the weight of a family that saw me only as a commodity.
Over the last year, I had completely forgotten what that word—family—even meant. Those people shared my blood, but they barely resembled a real family anymore. At least, not to me. For them, things had actually improved. They spent more time together now, and with me carrying the entire domestic workload, they had zero reasons to fight.
Well, except for one massive screaming match between my sister and my parents.
