Magnus sat at the table directly in front of me.
He was flanked by his inner circle, all of them draped in tailored suits, swirling crystal tumblers of amber whiskey with the casual, heavy confidence unique to those born to inherit the earth. But the rest of the room blurred into white noise. I could only see him.
His gaze drilled into me. For the first time since our marks had aligned, he was looking at me without tearing his eyes away. And I would be lying if I said I wasn’t terrified of the raw, volatile emotions burning in the depths of those slate-gray depths.
I had been looked at with anger before—plenty of times, in my own home. But his gaze didn’t just sting; it scorched, like wild sparks from a bonfire catching on bare skin.
It burned me so deeply that a cowardly, desperate instinct flared up inside me, begging me to run. To retreat to the safety of the hot kitchen under the pretense of throwing away trash and simply vanish into the night.
But running wouldn’t solve this. It never did.
The longer I stood there waiting for a drink order they were deliberately delaying, the more I realized his gaze was less of a look and more of a physical brand. My skin was practically on fire. The goosebumps racking my body weren’t just a reaction to the cold; they felt like a frantic, panicked swarm trying to claw its way out from under my flesh, desperate to flee like rats from a sinking ship.
I’m dead.
That was the cold, clinical truth written in his eyes. A sentence handed down by a sovereign Alpha, without the right to appeal.
I had spent the entire day playing a ghost, avoiding even the slightest shadow of him. I had stayed locked in the classrooms between lectures, hid in the narrow stalls of the restrooms, and eaten my lunch in the furthest corner of the cafeteria with my face turned to the wall. I hadn’t known if he would hunt me down after I stood him up at his car, but I knew the retribution would be swift.
Still, I had hoped. With the naive, pathetic hope of a child, I had prayed he would just forget. Surely a billionaire Alpha heir had more pressing matters to attend to than chasing down a disobedient Omega Breeder who dared to defy him.
How incredibly stupid of me.
And now, here I was, standing before him and his predatory pack brothers in this ridiculous, degrading maid uniform. The short black dress and starched white apron made me look like a prop in a cheap adult film. The hemline barely skimmed my thighs, and the neckline dipped so low that I had spent my entire shift desperately pulling at the fabric to cover myself.
Magnus remained silent. His friends traded tense, knowing glances, waiting for their lead to set the tone. The dominant pheromones radiating from him were so thick and suffocating that the air around the table felt like sludge. I felt it sliding over my bare skin—a heavy, leaden pressure that threatened to buckle my knees and force me to the floor.
"Whiskey," one of his friends finally drawled, his eyes taking a slow, leisurely tour of my body.
His sticky, assessing gaze slid up my exposed legs, lingered on the deep plunge of my collar, and finally settled on my face. A hot wave of humiliation flooded my cheeks. But the true horror struck a millisecond later: the moment that male’s eyes lingered, Magnus’s aura turned absolute zero.
The air practically crackled with static electricity. The temperature around the booth plummeted, making me shiver despite the stifling, alcohol-soaked heat of the lounge.
"And for the rest of you?" I choked out, forcing my face toward the others.
My voice sounded alien to my own ears—high-pitched, tightly wound, and fragile. I tried my best not to look at my mate, but it was like trying to ignore a raging fire in a locked room.
The other males muttered their orders, their voices merging into an indistinguishable hum. My hand moved mechanically, my pen scratching nonsense onto the pad. The letters bled across the paper in crooked, shaking lines.
Once the order was down, my resolve crumbled. I made the mistake of cutting a brief, passing glance back at him. A massive, fatal error.
His eyes were locked onto mine, tracking the rapid rise and fall of my chest. There was something dark, ancient, and violent swirling in his gaze. It was a suffocating mix of pure fury and a raw, territorial possessiveness—a primitive Alpha instinct so overwhelming that my own heart whimpered, begging me to drop my head and submit.
I wrenched myself away, spinning on my heels, and practically fled toward the kitchen.
My heart hammered so violently I half-expected it to burst from my chest and leave me behind. My hands shook with such force that I could barely hand the order slip to the girl behind the bar. She asked me something, but her voice was drowned out by a deafening roar in my ears, like I had dived too deep into black water and surfaced far too fast.
What the hell is he doing here?
My thoughts scrambled in a frantic, tangled mess, choking my airway. Why had he come to this place? Had he tracked my scent? Followed me? Or was this just a monstrous, cosmic coincidence?
But I didn’t believe in coincidences. Not when it came to him.
I spent the rest of the night in a state of agonizing suspense. Every single time I was forced to approach their booth, I felt like a condemned prisoner marching toward the scaffold. Magnus remained utterly silent. He didn’t order anything else. He just sat there, leaning back against the leather banquette, and watched. Just watched.
It was worse than any verbal threat. He was the most terrifying thing that had ever entered my life, and I felt that truth down to the very fiber of my soul. He had come here on purpose, a silent predator marking his territory. I didn’t even know which ancient gods to pray to for the rest of my shift to keep the storm of his wrath from swallowing me whole.
His friends placed a few more orders. I brought out their tumblers and plates, training my eyes strictly on the tray, trying to ignore his presence. But I felt him. Every second, his gaze was a brand on my flesh, leaving phantom burns that would ache long after I escaped this place.
If they actually let me escape.
