Mark of Sin: Bound to the Cruel Alpha

Chapter 26: Ownership

The sound of my name sliding off his tongue sent a cold dread pooling in my stomach. Hearing it voiced by him sounded less like a name and more like a binding command backdropped by a threat of violent retribution. He was acting as though he already owned every breath in my lungs, as though saying no to him was no longer a right I possessed.

"It’s freezing in there," I argued, nodding weakly toward the pitch-black beast idling on the curb. "I’m going to freeze and catch my death, and I don’t have the money to get sick right now."

"I heard you," he replied smoothly—far too smoothly. "Now get in the car."

He rounded the front and climbed into the driver’s seat, and a sudden click echoed as the passenger door unlocked right beside me. He had popped it open for me.

The gesture felt so absurd and surreal that I froze for a second. Knowing I had no real alternative, I climbed inside, feeling like a trapped animal stepping voluntarily into a cage.

He tapped a few controls on the leather-wrapped dashboard and pulled away from the curb. The SUV glided forward at a far more civilized speed than the last time I’d ridden with him. To my quiet shock, a heavy wave of dry, radiant heat began pouring from the vents, wrapping around my freezing limbs.

A long shiver ran down my spine, and a horrifying wave of relief washed over me. I had to bite my lip to keep from letting out an embarrassing sigh of sheer comfort.

Outside, I had been chilled so deeply my teeth were practically rattling in my jaw. But this warmth felt like a calculated bribe—a pathetic handout thrown by a dominant Alpha to keep his breeder compliant. Yet a sickening flicker of doubt crept into my mind, making my cheeks burn with shame. Was I being overly paranoid? Was he truly as irredeemable as I made him out to be?

Neither of us spoke. The silence inside the cabin grew thick, like a sheet of soundproof glass dropped between us.

By the time we pulled up to the dormitory entrance, I was already reaching for the door handle. But before my fingers could graze the chrome, a heavy mechanical thud echoed through the interior as the locks engaged. I flinched, snapping my head toward him as a fresh wave of panic hit my chest.

The trap was sprung.

He sat back in his seat, watching me. There was a dark, suffocating possessiveness in his eyes that made my skin prickle.

"You are never setting foot in that lounge again," he said, his baritone leaving zero room for debate. "I won’t have you running around in cheap trash outfits. I won’t have you dragging my family’s name through the gutter. You carry my fated bond, and no one is permitted to see you dressed like a piece of meat."

He drew a cigarette from a gold case, flicking a flame to life before cracking his window an inch to let the smoke escape into the night air. As his hand rested on the steering wheel, my eyes caught his wrist.

Where our matching fated mark rested, he was wearing a thick, rugged leather band completely covering the skin.

A sudden, physical wave of nausea hit me, sour and heavy at the back of my throat. My chest constricted so violently I felt like doubling over right there on the heated leather seat. Rationally, I knew I shouldn’t care about a mark I never asked for. But the emotional sting was blinding—a sharp, searing burn that trapped a scream right in my throat.

He was so deeply embarrassed by my existence that he wore a strap of leather to hide our soul-bond from the world. Yet he had the absolute nerve to dictate how I survived.

"So I’m dragging your name down by working for my own food?" I whispered, feeling a sudden, volatile fire ignite in my chest. "And how you treat me doesn’t shame you as an Alpha? You can’t even stand to look at the mark."

His head snapped toward me, his slate-gray eyes flashing with a cold, terrifying spark. It was an explicit warning—a predator telling its prey to back off. I ignored it completely. I didn’t care if he blew up right then and there.

I didn’t wait for his response. While his glare was pinned on my face, my hand darted out and slammed the central unlock button on the high-end dashboard.

"Go to hell, Magnus," I spat, throwing the door open and vaulting out into the night.

I slammed the heavy door behind me and sprinted up the dormitory steps without looking back. The night receptionist didn’t even bother lifting her head as I burst through the glass doors, which was a blessing. I practically flew up the stairwell, threw open the door to my room, and slammed it shut, sliding down against the wood until my knees hit the floor.

The room was pitch-black. Annie still wasn’t back... I’d have to text her before I went to sleep.

The mark on my wrist was on fire, throbbing with a sharp, punitive ache—as if punishing me for my audacity. I clamped my palm over it, but the heat didn’t fade. It only intensified, spilling through my veins like molten lava.

Dawn hadn’t even had the chance to paint the city skyline when a sharp knock rattled my door. I was tempted to bury my head beneath my pillow and pretend to be dead. This was a walking nightmare. I had spent half the night shaking in absolute panic, jumping at every creak of the floorboards, terrified that he would come back. I should have known better. If he hadn’t dragged me back on the way to the dorms, he certainly wasn’t going to break down my door in the middle of the night.

So what in the hell...

I swung my legs off the bed, pulled on a pair of sweatpants, and smoothed down my oversized t-shirt. When I yanked the door open, the delivery guy practically leaped backward. His nose was a bruised, swollen purple across the bridge, anchored by two massive black eyes. He looked so absurdly like a panda that a hysterical laugh bubbled in my throat, but I caught myself in time. I knew that signature mark. That was Annie’s doing.

"Good morning," I said, eyeing the sprawling, heavy bags in his hands. "I thought you swore you were never coming back here?"

He set the bags down directly on the threshold, casting paranoid glances between me and the open doorway as if I were carrying a biohazard.

"Sign here, please," he muttered, drawing a digital tablet from his satchel and extending it toward me from maximum arm’s length, still refusing to take a step closer.

I scribbled my signature and asked who the delivery was from. The guy stowed the tablet back into his bag and shrugged. "I’m just the driver. I deliver. Have a good day."

As he turned on his heel, I caught his hushed whisper: "I swear to God, I hope they never send me to this address again."

I hauled the massive bags inside, unceremoniously dumping their contents onto my floor, and froze in total shock.

One bag was completely loaded with premium groceries. The second contained a luxury leather backpack. Deep, supple black leather—the brand tags had been neatly cut off, but the exquisite tailoring practically screamed ungodly expensive. Tucked beside it was a heavy, lined hoodie, and a plain white envelope containing an unbranded black debit card. Written in sharp, precise ink on the inside flap of the envelope were four digits. A PIN code.

Nothing else. No note. No explanation.

Just money and expensive gear, as if a pile of luxury goods could rewrite what happened last night.

I was keeping the backpack. And maybe the hoodie, given that mine was lost to the bar forever. But the card... I didn’t want his money. I was going to hand it right back to him today. The second I spent a single cent off that card, he would believe he had bought my compliance—that I had accepted his terms. No way in hell.

As I stocked the food into our tiny kitchen, the sheer volume of it hit me: this was easily two weeks’ worth of high-end groceries, three if I stretched it out.

A strange, conflicting emotion ignited in my chest—a spark of warmth that was instantly drowned by a terrifying, nauseating dread.

An Alpha only feeds the breeder he intends to claim. It was an ancient, inescapable instinct written directly into our biology. The first unspoken ritual of courtship. The formal declaration of rights.

The beginning of ownership.
