Mark of Sin: Bound to the Cruel Alpha

Chapter 15: Replacement

A persistent, booming thud dragged me kicking and screaming from a thick, suffocating oblivion. The sound, entirely foreign to the sacred morning silence of the Omega dormitories, rattled against my eardrums, forcing my eyes open.

My eyelids felt like sandpaper scratching against my eyeballs. My whole body ached with a deep, punishing soreness, as if I’d been beaten with iron rods all night—the brutal aftermath of yesterday’s exhausting shift and that agonizing clash with him.

I burrowed deeper into the duvet, trying to hide from the draft creeping through the cracked window, and tracked Annie with a heavy, half-open eye.

Bleary-eyed and wearing nothing but an oversized, stretched-out tank top, she shuffled toward the door, muttering low curses upon the heads of whoever dared disturb a high-ranking Omega at such an ungodly hour.

"If this is Claire coming to borrow the blow dryer again, I’m going to bite her..." she hissed, wrenching the handle.

The door swung wide.

A heartbeat of absolute silence.

And then Annie let out a shriek that nearly shattered my eardrums—a high-pitched, supersonic siren of sheer panic. Acting purely on feral instinct, she slammed the heavy door shut with all her might.

A dull, wet thwack echoed through the wood, followed immediately by a strangled, pain-filled groan from the other side.

"Son of a..." a deep voice gasped out in the hallway.

Annie froze, throwing her back against the door, her eyes widening to the size of saucers. Her chest heaved as she fought for breath.

"There’s..." she wheezed, pointing a trembling finger behind her. "There’s a male! In the female Omega wing! A whole man!"

If not for the agonized groaning continuing outside, the sight of her—disheveled, terrified, looking exactly like a ruffled, panicked sparrow—would have been hilarious. Instead, the reality of the situation hit me like a lightning bolt.

I bolted out of bed, tangling myself briefly in the sheets. I scrambled into the first oversized hoodie I could find and stepped into a pair of sweatpants, while Annie paced the room in a frantic circle, unsure whether she was looking for a bathrobe to cover up or a blunt object to use as a weapon.

"Calm down!" I hissed at her. Taking a steadying breath, I cautiously pulled the door open.

Standing in the hallway was a young guy wearing a courier uniform. One of his hands clutched a sleek, branded white parcel, while the other was clamped tightly over his nose, which was leaking dark crimson onto the gray concrete floor.

"Oh gods..." I breathed, a burning wave of shame flushing up my neck. "I am so, so sorry. Please forgive her. She just... she wasn’t expecting anyone. This is an all-female wing dormitory; males are strictly banned from this floor..."

The courier leveled a look of universal suffering at me, rolling his eyes as he fished a handkerchief from his pocket.

"Yeah, I noticed," he grumbled, his voice nasal as he pinched his bleeding nose. "You lot are feral. I’m looking for Jane Lang."

My heart skipped a beat. A sudden chill snaked down my spine, instantly freezing away the last remnants of sleep.

"That’s me," I said, my voice wavering. "What is this?"

He shrugged, his entire posture screaming that he wanted to flee this madhouse immediately. "Just the delivery guy. I was ordered to hand it directly to you."

He shoved a heavy, thick paper parcel into my hands. It bore the embossed logo of a luxury boutique I had only ever seen in high-end glossies. Slinging his backpack off one shoulder, he pulled out a digital tablet and tapped the screen with a stylus.

"Sign here. And have a nice day. I pray I never have to come back to this sector again."

With a trembling hand, I scrawled a messy signature. He practically snatched the tablet back from my fingers, turned on his heel, and took off toward the stairwell at a brisk clip, never once looking back.

I stood frozen in the doorway, clutching the parcel. It felt deceptively heavy. Annie was already peering over my shoulder, her insatiable curiosity completely overriding her recent terror.

"What is it?" she whispered, craning her neck.

I walked slowly back into the room and set the heavy weight on my mattress. The thick paper crinkled loudly. Inside lay a black silk dust bag with shimmering silver drawstrings. It looked expensive. Recklessly, obscenely expensive. And as I held it, a faint, familiar scent drifted up—the rich aroma of premium leather laced with a subtle, dominating male pheromone that made the hairs on my arms stand up.

"Oh my gods, Jane, is that...?" Annie started, but the words died in her throat as I pulled the drawstring wide.

I slid the contents out.

A handbag.

It was crafted from flawless, matte black leather with perfect, invisible stitching and heavy hardware that caught the morning light like fine jewelry. It was small, completely impractical—built to hold a phone, a lipstick, and absolutely nothing of substance. It wasn’t a bag meant for a real life. It was an accessory designed solely to broadcast an Alpha’s status.

As I lifted it, a small card made of heavy cardstock fluttered out of the parcel and landed on the duvet. I picked it up, my fingers turning to ice.

Written across the surface in a bold, razor-sharp cursive were just a few words:

"To replace the one I threw away."

The air was instantly punched from my lungs.

It took an agonizing second for the full weight of the message to register through my sleep-deprived brain. But when it did, a bomb detonated in my chest.

A blinding, white-hot fury flooded my system, scorching away everything else. He hadn’t sent an apology. He had sent an ultimatum. To an Alpha like him, my old bag, my notes, my hard-earned money—my entire life—was just trash to be discarded on a whim and replaced with a glittering trophy.

"He threw my bag away..." I whispered, a thick, suffocating lump rising in my throat. "That arrogant bastard threw my things in the trash..."
