Mark of Sin: Bound to the Cruel Alpha

Chapter 21: Am I making myself clear?

As closing time approached, I finally allowed myself a shallow breath. I almost believed he was just going to leave—that this had been nothing more than a silent demonstration of dominance, a cruel reminder of who owned my ledger, and that would be the end of it.

I decided to head to the locker room early to change while the other waitresses were still wrapping up. Another girl had joined our shift tonight, making the closing rush slightly more manageable. I cast a final, cautious glance toward their booth.

Empty. They were gone.

Relief crashed over me so heavily my knees buckled. I leaned my back against the corridor wall, closing my eyes and letting the tension drain from my shoulders for a single, blessed second.

I celebrated too soon.

Standing right outside the locker room door was the one person I wanted to see least.

The bar owner.

He was a middle-aged human, pushing forty. Physically, he wasn’t entirely repulsive, but there was a sleazy grease to his presence that made my skin crawl.

Maybe it was the way his eyes lingered a second too long on my bare collarbones. Maybe it was the way he subtly slicked his tongue over his lips when he thought I wasn’t paying attention. Or maybe it was just my survival instincts, howling at me to put as much distance between us as possible.

My intuition had never lied to me. Having grown up in the slums, I had learned early on that well-dressed men in suits were often far more dangerous than the homeless junkies lurking in the alleyways.

"Jane, I have to say, I like how quickly you move on the floor," he began, stepping directly into my path to block the door.

Despite the compliment, his tone was laced with irritation, instantly putting me on high alert. I stopped several paces back, keeping a careful, instinctual boundary between us.

"But let’s establish some ground rules. I don’t tolerate my girls flirting with the high-end clientele."

I blinked, completely thrown. "But... I wasn’t flirting with anyone..."

I genuinely had no idea what he was talking about. I had spent the entire night trying to shrink into the wallpaper, keeping my eyes glued to the floorboards and avoiding eye contact like my life depended on it.

"That blonde Alpha in the corner booth with his pack brothers," the owner countered, crossing his arms. "You were hovering over their table far more than the others, Jane. You’re a young, pretty girl, so let me give you some free advice: wolves of that caliber aren’t looking for a fated bond with a parlor maid. They’re looking for a quick bite."

The sheer absurdity of the lecture made my head spin. I stood there, utterly speechless, as the bizarre reality of his warning settled over me.

"I’m sorry, but you are mistaken. I wasn’t flirting with anyone, and I have absolutely no interest in doing so," I said, my voice steady and firm. I prayed that would be the end of it.

The owner nodded slowly, but a slimy, unpleasant glint flickered in his eyes. Without warning, he stepped forward. Too close. He violently invaded my personal space, towering over me as the cloying, medicinal sting of his cheap cologne flooded my senses.

"How about you and I go out on a date sometime?" he murmured, leaning down.

I felt as though I’d been plunged headfirst into freezing water. Shock paralyzed me, stealing the oxygen straight from my lungs.

"I’m sorry, but as I already said, I’m not interested," I managed to breathe out, attempting to take a step back.

His face contorted, a dark, petulant sneer twisting his features. "Why are you playing hard to get? Do you seriously think you’re in a position to throw away a job?"

"And do you seriously think you’re in a position to keep your teeth, you fucking piece of trash?"

The voice sliced through the narrow corridor behind me. It was quiet, freezing, and lethal—cutting through the heavy air like a razor blade.

My entire body shuddered. It wasn’t just fear; it was recognition. Every single cell in my body vibrated in response to that deep baritone, and the dormant mark on my wrist flared with a sharp, burning heat.

The bar owner snapped his head up, his eyes widening as he looked over my shoulder at the shadow looming behind me.

"We are closing. Leave the premises and stop interrupting my conversation," the owner barked, though a tremor of uncertainty cracked his authoritative facade. His eyes darted across Magnus’s face, a desperate, frantic calculation running behind his pupils as he tried to place the young Alpha. But he was still hesitation incarnate.

A cold, icy shiver crept up my spine. Magnus was standing right behind me. I could feel his sheer physical presence with every raw nerve ending. His scent rolled over me—a thick, suffocating wave of expensive tobacco, dark cedar, and raw, predatory dominance. The pheromones of a true apex Alpha invaded my lungs, clouding my mind and making my knees weak.

"I dare you to say that to me one more time."

There was a terrifying, blade-like amusement in Magnus’s tone. I couldn’t see his face, but I could feel the heat of him at my back, sensing the raw, violent power vibrating in the air around him.

"Jane, get over here," the owner ordered quickly, finally registering the lethal threat standing in his hallway.

He reached out, his hand snapping toward my wrist. But he never made contact.

A heavy, iron-clad arm wrapped securely around my waist, hoisting me back and slamming my frame flush against a broad, solid chest.

My spine met a wall of absolute heat. The warmth of his body burned through the thin, cheap fabric of my maid uniform. His scent hit me with the force of a physical blow—hot, demanding, and utterly consuming, driving the air from my lungs and sending a violent tremor through my limbs.

My breeder instincts screamed in absolute chaos, tearing me between the desperate urge to claw my way free and the humiliating, primal need to melt into his touch.

"You are going to walk into that room, strip off this goddamn rag, put on your actual clothes, and walk out to the street," Magnus growled directly into my ear. His breath scorched my sensitive skin, his low voice scraping over my exposed nerves like acid. Every word felt like a brand being permanently seared into my soul. "And then you are going to sit by my car and wait for me. Am I making myself clear?"

It felt as though he had doused me in gasoline and struck a match. A feverish, breathless heat consumed my entire body—fueled by pure shock and the devastating realization of just how utterly powerless I was against him. I had let my guard down, foolishly believing he had left, and that stupid sliver of hope had just driven a knife straight into my back.

My body went entirely limp against him, unable to fight the sheer gravity of his command. I nodded, incapable of forcing a single syllable past my throat. When his arm finally released me, my legs felt like leaden weights as I stumbled toward the locker room.

Behind me, the bar owner began to shout, his voice rising into a panicked, high-pitched screech. But the sound faded into static. I couldn’t hear his threats, the background noise of the bar, or the city outside.

I could only hear the deafening, frantic rhythm of my own heart hammering against my ribs.
