As soon as we stepped inside the club, the wall of sound and flashing lights crashed over me. I knew at once this glittering, chaotic temple of nightlife was no place for someone like me.
During the drive from the mall, I had tried—carefully, gently—to reach Magnus. I chose my words with precision, hoping to make him see that dragging me here was a mistake. I would only feel out of place, a quiet shadow among predators.
But every argument I offered broke against the stone wall of his silence. His powerful hands stayed steady on the wheel, jaw set, the low thrum of his presence filling the car like the growl of a wolf barely holding back. He simply wouldn’t be swayed.
When we arrived, he pulled up to the entrance of the sleek, towering building, killed the engine, and did something that genuinely shocked me: he came around and opened my door.
Then he offered his hand—large, warm, faintly rough with calluses—and helped me out. For a man who carried the wild, lunar-blooded spirit of a werewolf, such old-fashioned courtesy felt dangerously intimate. It was almost too much for one night.
It had already been enough that he’d taken my bag, heavy with my old clothes and lecture notes, as if it weighed nothing to him. As I stepped out into the cold evening air wearing only the thin dress, he shrugged off his jacket and draped it over my shoulders.
His scent—dark pine, warm musk, and something unmistakably feral—wrapped around me like a claim. The heat of his body still lingered in the leather, sinking into my skin and awakening the strange, instinctive pull I’d been trying to ignore all evening. In that moment, with his jacket heavy on my shoulders and his wolf-bright eyes watching me, I felt marked.
Protected.
Wanted.
And I wasn’t sure I minded anymore.
The gesture hit me with such sudden, crushing force that I froze, unable to fully comprehend what was happening. Heavy, black leather draped over my bare shoulders. It carried his scent—far sharper and more concentrated than it had been in the SUV. A pungent, pervasive aroma of cedar and smoke that seeped into my senses, impossible to wash away even if I wanted to.
The sheer weight of the jacket anchored me to the spot. Tailored to fit his massive shoulders with ruthless perfection, it hung over my small frame like a cavernous sack. Yet it radiated heat.
Or perhaps it was suffocating me. I couldn’t tell the difference anymore. White lettering and emblem insignias glistened under the dim glow of the streetlamps—symbols of an elite status I couldn’t begin to decode.
Inside the club, the noise was absolute thunder. Heavy, rhythmic bass slammed directly against my ribcage, forcing my heart to hammer to a frantic, foreign beat that left me nauseous. The air was a suffocating mix of expensive perfume, burning tobacco, and dominant pheromones.
Though my unawakened senses usually picked up scents faintly, the staggering concentration in this enclosed space pressed down on me like a physical weight. It felt like thick, acrid smoke choking my lungs. The atmosphere was alive, intensely predatory, coating my bare skin in a sticky film of raw, unwanted desire. It made me want to claw off the silk dress and the cursed jacket entirely.
I gripped the cheap plastic coat-check ticket in my palm—a tiny, cold token of my vulnerability. The dress had no pockets, so I squeezed the tag until its sharp edges dug painfully into my hand through the thin fabric of my gloves. The sting brought a strange relief. It reminded me that I was still real, still grounded separate from this nightmare.
Losing that tag wasn’t an option. My old clothes and my new leather backpack were held hostage in the cloakroom; while no one in this high-end district would care for my worn-out garments, losing them would leave me with nothing.
I had never stepped foot into a place like this—nor into the heart of the Upper City altogether. It wasn’t that common citizens were legally barred from the district, but rather that being here served no purpose.
Even the air seemed to carry a price tag. Every glowing crest, every pristine boutique sign, every glass display showcasing rows of vintage liquor felt like a silent taunt: this realm was built for those who spent fortunes simply because they could.
Even a modest souvenir shop squeezed between Michelin-starred establishments turned out to be an antique gallery, selling trinkets that had survived centuries at prices higher than a year’s wage—a favorite punchline among my academy professors. It was far beyond the reach of normal people. Infinitely so.
A basic coffee from a vending machine here probably cost more than my entire monthly earnings at the cafe.
And the club itself was colossal. Multiple levels connected by a sweeping, curved staircase coiled around the open atrium.
Dark glass walls shimmered with cascades of ambient, moody lighting that didn’t blind, but rather contoured the elite figures lingering within. They fit into the opulent decor so seamlessly it felt as though they had been born in this gilded cage and would die here without ever leaving its walls.
The main dance floor surged with neon flashes, while private balcony VIP suites looked down from above, allowing the powerful to observe the chaos while remaining shrouded in the shadows. Polished marble reflected the flickering lights, and a sprawling bar on the ground floor gleamed under towering rows of rare spirits.
Without loosening his grip, Magnus guided me through the packed crowd. His iron fingers clamped around my wrist so tightly I could feel my own frantic pulse drumming against his palm. The crowd parted effortlessly before him. Instinctively sensing the arrival of an apex predator, people stepped aside, their eyes flickering over him with instant, subtle recognition before snapping away in silent reverence.
It was pure, unadulterated fear.
Stumbling on my heels, I scrambled to keep pace, acutely aware of the dozens of eyes tracking my every move. Curious, evaluating, sneering eyes.
The feeling of being so violently out of place was suffocating. An outrageously expensive silk dress paired with an oversized, heavy leather jacket that wasn’t mine—I looked like a child playing dress-up in her father’s closet.
The wrongness of the entire situation mounted, pressing hard against the back of my neck, my temples, my chest. I wanted to break free. To sprint away. But Magnus’s grip on my wrist was an iron vise.
