Apocalypse Escape: Day One of Survival

"Director Ma, I’m worried about my daughter and my family," the female clerk said, anxiously wringing her hands. "I have to go back and check on them."

"Sigh." Director Ma shook his head. "Just don’t regret it."

Xie Ning didn’t give them a chance for any more small talk. She yanked open the conference room door and was the first one to run out.

Song Youzhi hurriedly followed. The female clerk, Xiao Zhu, clenched her jaw and followed them out as well.

The conference room door slammed shut.

Xiao Zhu looked up and saw at least forty or fifty rotting corpses with ferocious faces gathered at the locked double glass doors.

They had pounded spiderweb-like cracks into the glass, which looked like it was about to give way.

"This way to the rooftop." Xiao Zhu took a deep breath and quickly led Xie Ning and Song Youzhi toward a small side door.

The three of them went through the office’s side door, circled around to a stairwell in the back, and hurried upstairs.

At the same time, the office’s glass doors finally gave way under the pounding of numerous zombies, cracking down the middle with a loud BANG.

Then they shattered into pieces and fell to the ground.

Several zombies, roaring and hissing, scrambled through the large hole in the doorway. Shaking their heads, they excitedly converged on the small conference room’s door.

BANG!

BANG! BANG!

The deafening sounds of pounding on the door weighed heavily on the hearts of everyone inside the small conference room.

A few women huddled in the corner couldn’t help but scream.

An old man roared, "What are you screaming for? Are you trying to invite them in?!"

These things were extremely sensitive to human voices. The moment they heard the faint sounds from inside, they started pounding on the door with even more vigor.

His face deathly pale, Director Ma turned and glanced out the window.

He saw about a hundred zombies packed densely in front of the building. Even if they made a rope from the curtains and lowered someone down, it would be like sending a sheep to a tiger—certain death.

"Director Ma, what do we do?"

By now, some people were starting to have regrets.

’We should have gone with that young girl. At least we would’ve had a fighting chance.’

’Now we’re trapped in this small conference room by zombies, with no food or water. How are we supposed to get through this ordeal?’

’Will the higher-ups really send someone to rescue us?’

’When will they come?’

The people suffering in the dire straits of the small conference room were not on Xie Ning’s mind at all.

’There are a million reasons to give up on saving yourself, and every single one is just as stupid.’ 𝗳𝚛𝗲𝕖𝕨𝕖𝗯𝚗𝚘𝕧𝕖𝗹.𝗰𝗼𝕞

Xie Ning and Song Youzhi followed the clerk, Xiao Zhu, up the emergency stairwell.

Xiao Zhu was just about to reach for the steel door when Xie Ning stopped her. "Wait."

"Let me." Xie Ning, her expression grave, gestured with a tilt of her head. She glanced back at the other two. "Don’t make a sound."

Song Youzhi and Xiao Zhu nodded in unison.

Xie Ning took a few steps forward and carefully eased the door open, creating a small gap.

The three of them peered through the gap and saw several zombies with misshapen faces turning, one by one, toward the steel door that had made the sound.

Xie Ning whispered, "Stay here, don’t move," then threw the steel door open and rushed out.

Panicked, Song Youzhi opened his mouth to shout, but remembering his niece’s warning, he quickly shut it again.

In less than a minute, Xie Ning had cut down two zombies. As another lunged at her from behind, she spun and stabbed it, dropping it dead to the ground.

"Get in here," Xie Ning called out in a low voice toward the steel doorway.

Song Youzhi and Xiao Zhu quickly ran onto the platform.

"Something’s coming up," Xiao Zhu said, her expression changing drastically as she glanced down the emergency stairwell.

"Lock the door."

"This door only locks from the outside!"

Xie Ning had already run to the edge of the platform, her eyes fixed on the old building across from them.

"Find something to block the door!"
