Seraphina’s POV
The bedroom felt suffocating, thick with unspoken dread. I pressed myself deeper into the corner by the window, the cool glass against my back the only anchor keeping me from drowning in panic. Every breath felt shallow, incomplete.
Through the pane, Theo raced across the packhouse yard, his small legs pumping as he chased after a bright red ball. The other pups squealed and laughed around him, their joy piercing through my terror like sunlight through storm clouds. His giggle reached me even through the glass, and for a heartbeat, the world felt manageable again.
I studied every movement he made, my muscles coiled tight as steel cables. They could whisper about me all they wanted. They could tear apart my reputation, question my motives, paint me as the villain in their stories. I had survived worse. But the instant anyone dared threaten my child, I would become their worst nightmare.
History would not repeat itself. Not while I drew breath.
Theo stumbled over his own feet, scooped up the ball, and glanced toward my window. His face lit up when he spotted me, and he waved with the uninhibited joy only children possessed. I managed a fragile smile and raised my hand in response.
His happiness was everything. Nothing else mattered.
The moment my hand fell, my phone shattered the oppressive quiet. The sudden sound made me jump, my heart hammering against my ribs before I even looked at the screen.
Private number. Unknown caller.
But I knew. Oh god, I knew exactly who it was. The recognition hit me like ice water in my veins, spreading cold dread through every nerve ending.
My first instinct screamed to let it ring until it died. Terror clawed at my throat, making it hard to swallow. The last encounter with this monster had ended in blood and screaming. But he had already tracked me down, found me here in what should have been sanctuary. Avoiding him now felt like delaying an avalanche.
Tell our mate. Call Julian now, my wolf demanded, her voice sharp with desperation.
No, I shot back internally. He will think we are lying again. He will push us away and we cannot survive that. Be quiet.
My wolf whimpered, a sound of pure anguish, but I shoved her deeper into silence. I could not risk telling Julian the truth only to watch him reject me again. Not when this predator was already circling his territory.
My fingers trembled violently as I accepted the call. I pressed the phone to my ear but said nothing, waiting.
A voice smooth as poisoned honey drifted through the speaker.
"Seraphina. I was not certain you would pick up," he said, dark amusement coloring every syllable. "But you are learning, are you not? What happens when people try to outsmart me."
My lungs seized. I had to know for certain. Fear was eating me alive, but I needed to hear him admit it.
"Did you murder them?" The words scraped out of my throat like broken glass. "Did you slaughter those innocent people just to send me a message?"
A calculated pause stretched between us, more menacing than any scream could be. "I have no idea what you mean, sweetheart. I have been quite occupied lately, reminiscing about old times."
"I know exactly what you are," I snarled, finding rage beneath the terror. "I know you well enough to recognize your handiwork. You would butcher innocents just to prove a point to me."
"If your understanding of me runs that deep," he purred, the sound making my skin crawl, "then why this ridiculous game of resistance? You know I always win, Seraphina. And you know many more people will suffer because of your stubborn little performance."
The words sank into my mind like venom, spreading poison through every thought. He was threatening the pack. Threatening Julian. Threatening everything I had fought to protect.
"I want nothing from you," I hissed, pushing past my fear. "Stay away from me. Stay away from my son."
"There she is, the protective mother," he mocked, cruel laughter threading through his voice. "How touching. But Seraphina, the longer you resist, the more bodies will pile up. You have a simple choice. Come to me willingly, and the entertainment ends. Remain there, and I will begin making artistic eliminations."
Artistic eliminations. He meant massacres. He meant destroying Julian’s pack piece by piece until I surrendered. The phone nearly slipped from my shaking hands. Theo’s laughing face flashed behind my eyes, and I could not breathe.
I could not listen to another word. I stabbed the end call button with desperate force, severing the connection like cutting off a diseased limb.
The phone tumbled to the carpet as I stumbled backward, collapsing onto the bed’s edge. My head dropped into my palms.
What had I done? I had led this monster straight to Julian’s doorstep. I had painted a target on every innocent soul in this pack.
He will not stop. He has already found you, Seraphina. Tell Julian the truth now, my wolf screamed, thrashing against my mental barriers.
Not yet, I argued through my tears. I will tell him everything but not now. He held me yesterday like nothing had changed and that means he might forgive me. I cannot risk losing that.
My heart felt like lead in my chest. I was trapped, paralyzed between impossible choices. No matter what path I chose, someone would pay the price.
Suddenly, chaos erupted from downstairs, yanking me from my spiral of panic.
Shouting. Hysterical, venomous shouting that I recognized instantly. Roxanne.
"She has to leave! Why is she still poisoning this place? She destroyed everything! We were perfect before she crawled back!"
My name, screamed like a curse, shattered the last thread of my control. The terror that had consumed me seconds before transformed into blazing fury.
I stood, my mind crystallizing with purpose. Roxanne had tested my patience since the moment I arrived. She could insult me all she wanted, but she would not scream my name like filth when my son played just outside.
I stalked from the room and descended the stairs, my movements predatory. The commotion originated from the living room near the main fireplace.
When I entered, the shouting stopped as if I had sucked all sound from the air.
Roxanne stood in the center of a loose circle of pack members. Elders, warriors, mothers, and young women all watched with varying degrees of discomfort as Roxanne continued her tantrum, her face mottled red with rage.
"She thinks because she is the mate, she can destroy everything and strut around like nothing happened? She should be banished!"
Every eye turned to me. The pack members looked uncertain, clearly uncomfortable with Roxanne’s dramatics but unsure how to respond.
I moved forward with deliberate precision until I stood directly in front of her. She was tall, but in that moment, I felt like I could crush her underfoot.
The terrified woman from upstairs was gone. The mother standing here had no time for games.
My palm connected with Roxanne’s cheek in a sharp, echoing crack that silenced the entire room. Everyone gasped, eyes wide with shock. Roxanne stood frozen, her hand pressed to her face, fury replaced by stunned disbelief.
"You will control your tongue from this moment forward, Roxanne," I said, my voice low and deadly calm, vibrating with barely restrained rage. "My son is playing outside. I will not have him hear his mother being slandered by someone who understands nothing."
Roxanne opened her mouth to shriek again, but I stepped closer, cutting her off.
"I warned you once," I continued, making sure my words reached every person present. "I told you the girl you used to bully no longer exists. That girl tolerated your tantrums. This mother will not. I do not care what you think you lost or what you believed you deserved. This pack belongs to me. That mate belongs to me."
I swept my gaze around the room, ensuring everyone heard my declaration, especially Roxanne.
"I am grateful, Roxanne, for maintaining the pack and caring for my mate during my absence," I said, forcing false sweetness into my tone. "You performed admirably. But your temporary role has ended. I have returned. And I am reclaiming everything that is mine."
