Seraphina’s POV
The digital clock glowed 4:30 AM when my eyes snapped open. Julian lay beside me, his chest rising and falling in deep, even breaths. In sleep, the harsh lines of his face had softened, making him look almost vulnerable.
Almost.
I eased out of bed with practiced silence, my bare feet finding the cool hardwood floor. Every movement was calculated, precise. I couldn’t afford to wake him, not yet.
My work clothes slipped on like armor - dark jeans, fitted black sweater, boots that would carry me through whatever chaos I was about to unleash. I scraped my hair back into a no-nonsense ponytail and caught my reflection in the mirror. The woman staring back looked ready for war.
The pre-dawn air bit at my skin as I marched toward the Fang House, but the chill only sharpened my focus. This was long overdue.
Inside, the massive structure hummed with quiet activity. The Omegas had already begun their morning routines, moving through the kitchen like ghosts in the dim light.
"Luna?" One of them straightened, concern flickering across her features. "Is everything alright?"
"Not yet," I replied, my voice cutting through the morning stillness. "But it will be."
I strode into the main living area and surveyed the damage. Everything had been rearranged since my departure months ago. Hideous curtains hung where elegant drapes once graced the windows. Cheap, gaudy vases cluttered surfaces that had once been tastefully bare. The entire space reeked of lavender - a scent I knew most of our pack despised.
"I want every piece of furniture moved back to its original position," I announced to the room. "Every decoration, every accent piece. This place needs to look exactly as it did before I left."
The Omegas exchanged uncertain glances but began moving. Their pace was too slow, too tentative. Breakfast would be served soon, and I needed this finished before then.
I closed my eyes and opened the pack mind-link, my mental voice reaching every conscious member.
"This is your Luna speaking. I need all available hands at the Fang House immediately. We’re conducting a complete restoration. If you’re awake, move. Now."
Within minutes, the house erupted with activity. Fang members flooded through the doors, hauling furniture, scrubbing surfaces, opening windows to banish the offensive floral stench. I orchestrated the chaos like a conductor leading a symphony of destruction and renewal.
"Strip those awful curtains!" I called out over the din. "Scrub every surface until it gleams! I want this place spotless!"
The front door burst open with enough force to rattle the hinges. Julian stood in the doorway, hair disheveled, wearing hastily thrown-on sweatpants and a wrinkled shirt. His dark eyes swept the scene with growing incredulity.
"What the hell is happening here?" His voice boomed over the sound of vacuum cleaners and moving furniture.
He cut through the controlled chaos until he stood before me, where I held court with my clipboard and growing satisfaction.
"Why does it sound like a construction site in here?" he demanded. "Why is half the furniture in the hallway?"
My smile was sharp as a blade. "Spring cleaning, darling. We’re putting everything back where it belongs."
"At six in the morning?" His jaw clenched. "End this. Send everyone home."
"Absolutely not."
"Seraphina." His tone carried a warning that would have sent most pack members scurrying. "I don’t have patience for whatever game you’re playing. Stop this nonsense immediately."
I stepped closer, close enough to see the golden flecks in his dark eyes. "I’m not stopping anything. If I don’t like how something looks, it gets changed. If I don’t like how something smells, it gets scrubbed away. This is my pack house too."
Julian opened his mouth to argue, then his gaze shifted over my shoulder. I followed his line of sight to find Cordelia perched on the staircase like a predatory bird. Her silk robe draped around her perfectly, her expression radiating pure venom.
Perfect.
Time for a performance.
"Oh, Julian, sweetheart!" I pitched my voice to carry, sugary sweet and deliberately loud. I latched onto his arm, pressing it against my body. "Don’t be such a grouch about a little housework!"
His entire body went rigid. "Seraphina, what are you doing? Let go."
"Not a chance." I reached up and pinched his cheek with theatrical affection. "You’re absolutely adorable when you’re all riled up."
Several warriors had stopped their work to watch our impromptu show, poorly concealed amusement dancing in their eyes. Julian’s face flushed crimson.
"Seraphina, stop this. Everyone’s staring."
"Let them look," I cooed, resting my head against his shoulder while he tried to extract himself from my grip. We engaged in a comical wrestling match - his supernatural strength against my stubborn determination.
"Get off," he hissed through gritted teeth.
"I’ll consider it," I whispered directly into his ear, "but only if you come somewhere with me right now."
"I’m not going anywhere with you."
"Perfect!" I announced loudly. "Then I guess we’ll continue here. After this room, I’m tackling your office next."
Pure panic flashed across his features. "Fine! I’ll come with you!"
I released him instantly, triumph singing in my veins. "Wonderful! Let’s go."
Before he could protest, I grabbed his hand and dragged him toward the back exit, deliberately ignoring Cordelia’s murderous glare from above.
The forest behind the pack house offered blessed quiet after the orchestrated chaos we’d left behind. Julian trudged along behind me, muttering complaints under his breath.
"Where exactly are you dragging me? This is completely insane."
"Patience," I replied sweetly.
We walked deeper into the woods until we reached a small clearing ringed by towering pines - a circle of grass that remained unchanged despite everything else that had shifted in my absence.
"At least this place stayed the same," I murmured, drinking in the tranquility.
Julian crossed his arms impatiently. "We’re here. Now explain what this is about."
Instead of answering, I closed my eyes and reached for my power. Energy flowed through me as I visualized an invisible dome encompassing our clearing. The air shimmered as my magic took hold, weaving a privacy barrier around us.
When I opened my eyes, Julian was looking around with grudging respect. "Your control has improved significantly."
"I learned quite a bit while I was away. Now give me your hands."
"Why?"
"Just do it."
After a moment’s hesitation, he extended his hands. I clasped them in mine, his warmth seeping into my palms as I closed my eyes again. This time, I reached deeper, sending tendrils of my white magic into his system. I searched every corner of his mind, every shadow of his heart, seeking the dark magic I was certain had to be there.
I searched thoroughly, methodically, desperately.
And found absolutely nothing.
My eyes snapped open, and I dropped his hands as if they’d burned me. His energy was completely clean, his mind entirely his own. No curses, no compulsions, no magical interference of any kind.
The realization hit me like a physical blow.
"There’s nothing there," I whispered.
"What?"
"No magic," I said, my voice growing stronger with rising fury. "Cordelia never cursed you. You’re not under any kind of spell."
Julian went completely still.
"You’ve been pretending this entire time," I accused, pointing a trembling finger at his chest. "You’re not some victim of dark magic. You’re not being controlled. You chose to act this way. You chose to be cold and distant and cruel."
The betrayal felt like acid in my throat. All this time, I’d believed he needed saving, that some external force was responsible for his behavior. But it had been a lie. He had been lying to me.
"Why?" I demanded, my voice cracking with hurt and rage. "Why pretend? What possible reason could you have for this charade? Tell me the truth, Julian. Right now!"
