I remained frozen in the bedroom doorway, the damp towel clutched uselessly in my grip. Steam from the cramped bathroom had soaked through my clothing, leaving me chilled, though the ice coursing through my body had nothing to do with moisture.

Behind the closed door came muffled gasps that transformed into heartbroken weeping. Seraphina was still locked inside the main bathroom, the same space I had fled from moments before.

My wolf released a silent, anguished cry that echoed through every fiber of my being. The sound felt like a blade carving through my chest. Every instinct screamed at me to tear down that barrier, gather her against me, confess my love and promise to repair the damage I had caused. But I remained paralyzed.

Both my human and wolf sides hemorrhaged internally, bound to the suffering we were inflicting on her. Yet I understood the futility of entering that room. My comfort was the last thing she desired. She needed my absence, or perhaps she simply longed for the world to revert to its state before I had shattered her faith once more. But I could not retreat until I uncovered the truth.

I stripped away my soaked garments with urgent efficiency. Each sob that penetrated the walls carved away another fragment of my essence, but my purpose remained clear.

Pressing my spine against the wall beside the bathroom entrance, I spoke in a whisper so faint that even supernatural hearing could not detect it.

"If only I could reveal everything, Seraphina. If only I could share what I truly know."

The complete truth behind my actions and the reasons for my repeated rejections carried too much danger to expose now. I needed absolute focus. I had to discover Roxanne’s machinations, her methods, and most importantly, her motivations. Only then could we begin reconstructing what lay in ruins.

Casting one final, tortured glance at the sealed door, I departed, my cowardice weighing heavily on my shoulders.

Theo had already claimed his position at the dining table, a precarious tower of mashed potatoes balanced on his fork. He had not bothered waiting for us. Perfect. His infectious happiness was exactly what I needed.

"Daddy! Where did you disappear to? I was practically dying of hunger!" Theo’s words were garbled around his generous mouthful, his face radiating pure contentment.

The overwhelming joy that floods through me each time he uses that title defies description.

I summoned a genuine smile, forcing the raw agony from the corridor into the deepest recesses of my mind. "My apologies, little man. You could not wait for your sluggish parents, could you?"

"Absolutely not!" His grin stretched across his face, eyes sparkling with mischief.

I approached him, bending to plant a kiss on his sauce-smeared forehead. My wolf emitted a soft, grateful rumble, cherishing this single, uncomplicated bond. "Smart choice. Keep eating."

I settled into my chair just as Seraphina appeared in the doorway. She wore an expression of perfect normalcy, all traces of tears erased except for the telltale puffiness around her eyes and an impenetrable mask of composure. She took the seat opposite mine. Neither of us acknowledged the other. Words remained unspoken.

For Theo’s benefit, we both manufactured the required smiles. We discussed the amusing antics of his friend at the pack orphanage, chattering about meaningless topics that filled the silence. We performed as two actors playing house, while Theo remained blissfully unaware of the arctic tension dividing us.

When Theo finally declared himself completely satisfied, pushing his empty plate away, I recognized the moment had arrived.

"Seraphina," I began, struggling to maintain an even tone. "I need to step out briefly. I will not be gone long."

I anticipated the familiar strained quiet or perhaps a simple nod of acknowledgment. Instead, she raised her gaze, her features completely expressionless.

"Do not bother," she stated.

Two words. Two devastatingly simple words.

"Do not bother."

They carried no anger or confrontational edge. They were words of complete dismissal. Their meaning was crystal clear: Your coming or going holds no significance for me. Act according to your wishes. I am indifferent to your return.

My wolf erupted in a soundless explosion of rejection and torment. My heart constricted with physical pain. I managed a single nod, fighting to keep my expression neutral.

"Understood," I replied, rising from my seat.

I simply walked away. The door closed behind me with a soft click that sounded like the final punctuation on a devastating sentence.

The house stood several blocks away. It might no longer feel like my true home, but it remained the place where my daughter had spent her childhood, and it would always provide me with a particular sense of warmth.

Tonight, however, as I drew closer, the atmosphere felt corrupted. The pavement beneath my feet seemed unforgiving, and the familiar comfort I associated with these visits had vanished. Everything felt altered. Oppressive. As if I were entering a space heavy with secrets.

The door swung open before I could knock. Elena burst forward, throwing her arms around my waist and pressing her face into my chest.

My arms instinctively encircled her petite frame, intending to offer a brief, reassuring embrace.

But the instant her body made contact with mine, reality ground to a halt.

Time ceased its movement. Seraphina’s rejection faded into nothingness. The mission, my fury, the confusion it all evaporated, overwhelmed by an intense surge of profound emotion.

This was more than a simple embrace. It felt as though I had spent my entire existence walking around incomplete, and she was the final piece clicking perfectly into position. This sensation differed entirely from anything I had previously experienced with her. It was more complete. More joyful. It was the feeling of belonging. I maintained our embrace longer than necessary. My mind raced, attempting to process this powerful, immediate connection.

When she finally stepped back, gazing up at me with moisture filling her eyes, I looked down at her features.

And I truly observed her for the first time.

The air abandoned my lungs.

A wave of profound shock and vertigo overwhelmed me. Every aspect of her face, her eyes, the curve of her lips, struck me with a terrifying sense of recognition.

It was like encountering her for the very first time, despite having known her since birth.

"I must leave," I stammered, the words thick and awkward.

I pushed through the front entrance, shutting it hastily, and stumbled onto the grass.

I collapsed against a massive oak, pressing my palms hard against its rough surface until the pain anchored me to reality.

I stared back at the illuminated house.

A rush of cold comprehension struck me, rendering me completely motionless.

Dark magic. Concealing truth. My blood. My daughter. Closer than I had imagined.

A frigid, undeniable understanding settled in my gut: The Seer had not been speaking of some hidden child beyond the pack boundaries. She had been referring to someone I encountered daily, someone I knew intimately.
