Seraphina’s POV

I remained motionless in my seat, my father’s harsh judgment echoing through my mind like thunder.

Coward.

The word hit harder than any physical blow I had ever endured. Every instinct screamed at me to defend myself, to shout back that he was mistaken, to prove I was strong and brave and worthy of being Luna. But the protest died in my throat because somewhere in the depths of my soul, I feared he might be speaking the truth.

Hot tears began to gather behind my eyes.

My father was not finished delivering this brutal lesson. He watched my tears form but made no move to comfort me or soften his approach.

"Seraphina," his voice dropped to something quieter yet remained deadly serious. "Do you believe love consists only of sweet moments and joy? Do you imagine it is nothing but tender kisses and perfect days? That is not reality. Love requires sacrifice. Love demands effort."

His hand moved across the table to clasp my mother’s fingers.

"Look at what we have built," he said, gesturing toward her. "We have shared more than thirty years together, Seraphina. Do you honestly believe each day was simple? Do you think we never argued or caused each other pain?"

My mother slowly shook her head, her gaze soft as she looked at him.

"We survived," my father continued. "Not because we are without flaws. There were moments when anger consumed us, when exhaustion overwhelmed us, when sorrow made one of us consider walking away. There were long nights when we turned away from each other in silence."

He leaned closer, his intense stare piercing through me.

"But we understood we could not abandon what we had," he said with unwavering conviction. "Why? Because we made a sacred vow to each other. When we exchanged promises at our wedding, we swore to stand together in sickness and in health. We promised to remain bound until death and beyond. Those words carry weight, Seraphina. They are not something you discard when life becomes difficult or messy."

I brushed away a tear, struggling to control my breathing. "I understand, Pa."

"Do you truly?" he pressed. "Because from what I know, the mate bond you share with Julian runs even deeper than human love. It connects more than just hearts. It is more powerful and it binds your very essence together."

He released my mother’s hand and settled back, folding his arms. Pain flickered across his features, as though he was reliving something unbearable.

"And you shattered that connection," he said with crushing weight. "You destroyed that bond, and we were forced to watch him suffer."

My father drew a shaky breath.

"Those first weeks after your departure were devastating to witness," he began. "Julian fought desperately to maintain his composure. He forced himself to attend pack meetings. He continued training sessions with the warriors. He smiled when duty required it."

My father’s expression grew darker. "But it was all pretense. We could see past the facade. He was crumbling before our eyes, Seraphina. It was like watching a mighty tree slowly dying from lack of nourishment. Beneath the surface, he was in agony."

I pressed my hand against my mouth to muffle the sob threatening to escape.

"The following weeks were devastating for him," my father went on, his voice growing rough. "The pretense crumbled. We watched him lose weight rapidly. His clothing hung loose on his shrinking frame. Dark shadows appeared beneath his eyes from sleepless nights. Food became meaningless to him. Joy disappeared completely."

My father turned toward the window, staring into the black night.

"And then," he whispered, "something inside him died. The warmth vanished from his eyes. That was when he transformed into the hollow man Caleb described."

I squeezed my eyes shut. Images flooded my mind of Julian, gaunt and exhausted, isolated in his office. My heart felt like it was shattering completely. During those early weeks apart, we spoke frequently, yet he never revealed his suffering. I believed I was protecting our bond, but instead I was destroying my mate.

"I see it now," I managed to say through my tears. "I see what you are telling me, Pa. I caused him pain. I broke him completely."

I forced myself to meet my parents’ eyes.

"But," I said desperately, "something else happened today. When I saw him again, something was wrong with the way he looked at me. I know he is hurt. I know he might despise me now. But when I looked into his eyes, they seemed completely hollow," I insisted. "It was not natural. Even with a broken heart, those eyes were completely lifeless."

"Perhaps," he acknowledged. "Perhaps something else is affecting him."

But then he pointed directly at me again.

"However, before you rush off to investigate," he warned, "before you try to discover what might be wrong with Julian, you must answer one crucial question."

The silence in the room became absolute.

"Ask yourself whether you are prepared to remain beside him through everything," my father said with steel in his voice. "Through his anger. Through the healing process. Through the difficult days that will come even after you repair this damage."

He paused to let the gravity of his words settle.

"If your answer is no," he said, "if even the smallest part of you believes you might abandon him again, then you must leave immediately. Right now would be the perfect time to go and leave him in his current state."

"Why?" I asked, my voice barely audible.

"Because if you leave now, he will never have to endure losing you again," my father explained simply. "He has already become cold. He has already grown numb. Do not awaken him, make him love you again, only to abandon him to die a second death. That would be the cruelest thing imaginable."

I stared down at my trembling hands. This was no longer about fighting enemies. This was about dedicating my entire life to my mate, regardless of what came.

I thought of Julian’s smile, his gentleness, the future we were meant to share. I realized my fears were irrelevant. My independence was meaningless. Only he mattered now.

"I am staying," I whispered. Then with more strength, "I am not going anywhere. I will heal him, and I will never abandon him again."

My father studied me carefully, searching for any trace of deception. Finally, his expression softened, the harsh lines around his mouth fading.

He came around the table and embraced me, but this hug was different. It was tender and reassuring.

"Good," he murmured against my hair. "That is exactly what I needed to hear."

He stepped back and smiled at me gently.

"And you should know," he added, "if you had chosen to leave, we would have been packing tonight."

I stared at him in shock. "What? But you said you loved living here."

"We do," my father replied. "But you are our daughter. We come as a set, Seraphina. Wherever you go, we follow."

New tears filled my eyes, but these were tears of gratitude. Even while scolding me, even while forcing me to face painful truths, he remained my protector. He was still my Pa.
